David Wellington is the author of the popular 'Monster Island' trilogy (which I’ve heard good things about and really want to read) and this uneven vampire novel (the first of a trilogy) in which a state trooper named Arkeley and his lesbian partner Caxton fight the forces of the undead.Although there's plenty of action and gore, the characterization and the motivation are a little iffy. Neither Arkely nor Caxton are particularly likeable and it's hard to get into their heads. And for every action scene that wows you, there’s one that leaves you scratching your head in confusion due to Wellington’s sketchy detailing and inconsistencies, mostly with regards to what the vampires are capable of and what they're vulnerable to.
All-in-all, it's a quick read and a rather jolly Halloween romp but it'll never take the place of a 'Salem's Lot' or 'Interview with the Vampire' on your bookshelf.
