The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organization, today launched the “Generation Equality Scholarships” for LGBT and allied students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the fight for queer equality. The scholarships are part of HRC Foundation’s Youth and Campus Outreach Program, which aims to provide tools, facilitate connections and empower young people to fight for LGBT equality on campus and beyond. “All too often, LGBT students face obstacles in the pursuit of education, whether it be from a lack of family support or negative experiences in the classroom or on campus. The Generation Equality Scholarships are aimed at providing exceptional students with the funding that they need and deserve,” said Candace Gingrich, Senior Manager for the HRC Foundation's Youth and Campus Outreach Program. “In these challenging economic times, it’s important that current and prospective students have these resources available to them.”

The HRC Foundation will award three $2,000 scholarships to LGBT and allied students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the fight for queer equality. Priority will be given to applicants who:
• Self identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or an ally
• Have applied to or are enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education
• Have demonstrated a commitment or contribution to the LGBT community
• Are in good academic standing
• Have demonstrated need for financial assistance
The application deadline for academic year 2009-2010 is June 1, 2009. Finalists will be asked to submit additional materials. Scholarship recipients will be announced in July.
In addition to these new scholarships, the Youth and Campus Outreach Program also provides a comprehensive online database of more than 200 other scholarships available to LGBT and allied students. The list, which includes national, statewide and school-specific scholarships, was created to ensure that students committed to the fight for LGBT equality can reach and benefit from institutions of higher education. Generation Equality, the current group of high school and college-aged young people, is more supportive of LGBT equality than any other generation in our country’s history. As young people work to attain the goals of the queer community on their campuses, it is the aim of the Youth and Campus Outreach Program to provide tools and help facilitate connections with other LGBT student activists across the country.
