Dustin Lance Black to receive Special Recognition Award from GLAAD

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) announced today that Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of 'Milk', will receive a Special Recognition Award at the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards Presented by IBM in San Francisco. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives, and will be held in San Francisco on May 9, 2009 at the Hilton San Francisco.

GLAAD previously announced that actor Chad Allen will receive the Davidson/Valentini Award, and Chelsea Handler will host the event. The Davidson/Valentini Award is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community. In 2008, Allen appeared as openly gay detective Donald Strachey in here! Networks' 'The Donald Strachey Mystery Series' and served as a producer on the film Save Me, which offered audiences a look into the world of so-called "ex gay ministries." 'The Donald Strachey Mystery Series' is nominated for Outstanding Television Movie at the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards and 'Save Me' is a nominee for Outstanding Film – Limited Release.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will present Geoff Callan and Mike Shaw with the San Francisco Local Hero Award. Their film, Pulse of Equality, is an emotionally charged documentary that provides viewers with an inside look at Mayor Newsom's decision to allow the first same-sex couple to exchange their vows. This past year, Callan and Shaw brought the film across California to fight the anti-gay Proposition 8.

GLAAD Media Awards will also be presented in the Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Reality Program categories.

Guests and presenters scheduled to attend the event include: Mayor Gavin Newsom; Suze Orman; Jason Lewis (Sex & The City, Brothers & Sisters); Gabrielle Christian, Mandy Musgrave (South of Nowhere); Dan Jinks, Cleve Jones (Milk); Robert Gant (Save Me); Eduardo Xol (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition); Michelle Clunie (Queer As Folk); Wilson Cruz (He's Just Not That Into You); Calpernia Addams (Transamerican Love Story); Laverne Cox (I Want to Work for Diddy); Megan Cavanagh (Exes and Ohs); Judge David Young; and GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. More names to be announced.

Musical performances will include violinist Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg with the New Century Chamber Orchestra, as well as openly gay singer Matt Alber.

In January, GLAAD announced 125 nominees in 26 English-language categories, and 60 Spanish-language nominees in 15 categories. A complete list of this year's 185 nominees is available at http://www.glaad.org/mediaawards. Maine Senate voted today in favor of gay marriage

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, praised the Maine state Senate for its vote today in favor of legislation that would permit same-sex couples to marry under state law. The state Senate voted 20 - 15 in favor of the measure, which now moves to the House of Representatives. The Senate defeated an amendment to the bill that proposed putting the question of marriage equality for same-sex couples before voters.

“It seems like every day another state legislative body is voting in favor of marriage equality, recognizing that all loving, committed couples, and their families, deserve equal rights and responsibilities under the law. It’s increasingly clear that legislators across the nation understand that it’s simply the right thing to do,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “We congratulate the bill’s sponsor, Senator Dennis Damon, as well as the other senators who voted in favor of this important legislation, as well as Equality Maine for its great work in building support for equality. We hope that this bill will soon pass the House and be enacted into law.”

The Human Rights Campaign has had a field organizer on the ground in Maine for the past three months working with Equality Maine to build support for the marriage legislation. The House of Representatives is expected to take up the measure within the next two weeks.

Four states have recognized marriage for same-sex couples under state law: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, and Vermont (effective September 1, 2009). Earlier this month, Iowa’s state supreme court unanimously ruled that the state constitution guarantees same-sex couples the equal right to marry. On April 7, Vermont’s legislature overrode Gov. Douglas’ veto, making Vermont the first state to recognize marriage equality through the legislative process. Last week, Connecticut enacted a bill codifying the state supreme court’s October 2008 decision recognizing marriage for same-sex couples.

New York recognizes marriages by same-sex couples legally entered into in another jurisdiction. California recognized marriage by same-sex couples between June and November of 2008, before voters approved Proposition 8, which purports to amend the state constitution to prohibit marriage equality. The Proposition 8 vote has been challenged in court; a decision by the state supreme court is expected by June.

Legislatures in New Hampshire and New York are also considering legislation that would permit same-sex couples to marry under state law. New Hampshire’s state Senate voted yesterday in favor of legislation to recognize marriage for same-sex couples.

Maine currently provides same-sex couples with access to limited rights and benefits through a domestic partner registry.

Same-sex couples do not receive federal rights and benefits in any state. To learn more about state by state legislation visit: www.hrc.org/state_laws.

Colorado responds to passage of Matthew Shepard Act

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette and Out Front Colorado editor Matt Kailey are among those who have responded to the passage of the Matthew Shepard Act.

“Everyone in this country deserves a chance to pursue the American dream free from intimidation and persecution,” said U.S. Rep. DeGette, who is Vice Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus and cosponsor of the measure.

"The passage of the Matthew Shepard Act in the House today brings us one step closer to full equality for GLBT people by recognizing that our lives are just as valuable as anyone else's," said Kailey.

Hate Crimes Prevention Act, known as the Matthew Shepard Act, passes

The Human Rights Campaign hailes today’s bipartisan vote of 249-175 in the U.S. House passing the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also known in the U.S. Senate as the Matthew Shepard Act.

“All Americans are one step closer to protection from hate violence thanks to today’s vote,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “Hate crimes are a scourge on our communities and it’s time we give law enforcement the tools they need to combat this serious problem.”

“No one should face violence simply because of who they are,” said Judy Shepard, executive director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation. “This bill is a critical step to erasing the hate that has devastated far too many families.”

On Tuesday the White House released a statement from President Obama calling for passage in the House and urging the Senate to follow with swift action. Along with the President, more than 300 law enforcement, civil rights and religious organizations support the bill.

“The Senate should heed the President’s leadership and quickly pass the Matthew Shepard Act,” said Solmonese. “After more than ten years and tens of thousands of victims, there should be no delay in passing this bill into law.”

This is the eighth successful vote on a federal hate crimes bill which – following a veto threat from former President Bush – died in the last Congress.

“Fair-minded leaders in Congress have for years stood strong against lies about the bill and we are grateful for their efforts,” continued Solmonese. “The leadership of Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer and Majority Whip Clyburn as well as Reps. Conyers, Kirk, Baldwin, Frank, and Polis made this incredible victory possible.”

Working in coalition with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the Human Rights Campaign mobilized its members to support the bill. The website www.FightHateNow.org gives users opportunities to contact their member of Congress, watch video testimonials on hate crimes and learn the truth about the legislation. The site will continue as a clearinghouse for information leading up to Senate action.

The LLEHCPA gives the Justice Department the power to investigate and prosecute bias-motivated violence where the perpetrator has selected the victim because of the person's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. It provides the Justice Department with the ability to aid state and local jurisdictions either by lending assistance or, where local authorities are unwilling or unable, by taking the lead in investigations and prosecutions of violent crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury that were motivated by bias. It also makes grants available to state and local communities to combat violent crimes committed by juveniles, train law enforcement officers, or to assist in state and local investigations and prosecutions of bias motivated crimes.

HRC condemns Rep. Foxx’s remarks calling Matthew Shepard’s hate motivated murder “a hoax”

During debate on hate crimes legislation taking place today on the floor of the United States House of Representatives, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) claimed that Matthew Shepard's death was “a hoax.”

While Matthew’s mother, Judy Shepard looked on from the House gallery, Foxx, who managed the floor for those opposed to the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, spoke saying, “the hate crimes bill that’s called the Matthew Shepard Bill is named after a very unfortunate incident that happened where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn’t because he was gay. This – the bill was named for him, hate crimes bill was named for him, but it’s really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills.”

More after the jump.

“Vile lies, like the one spread by Rep. Foxx today on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives about Matthew’s brutal hate-fueled murder, continues to underscore how extreme anti-LGBT opponents have become,” said Brad Luna, Communications Director for the Human Rights Campaign. “It is no longer acceptable in this day and age to just come right out and say you don’t like gay people. Instead, extremist opponents of equality must resort to these types of malicious and twisted lies. Rep. Foxx should be ashamed of herself.”

On the night of October 7, 1998, two men led Matthew Shepard to a remote area east of Laramie, Wyoming where they demonstrated unimaginable acts of hate, killing the twenty-one year old college student because he was gay. This hate motivated murder sparked a national outcry to expand hate crimes laws to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The perpetrators of this heinous act are now both serving life sentences for Matthew’s death.

Media Matters for America has posted video of Rep. Foxx’s remarks today and background information regarding widespread acceptance among the media and others that Matthew’s murder was motivated by hate violence. To view the video and read the background, go to: http://mediamattersaction.org/items/200904290005

Because there is no federal law mandating states and municipalities to report hate crimes, they are often underreported. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s own statistics, based on voluntary reporting, show that since 1991 over 100,000 hate crime offenses have been reported to the FBI, with 7,624 reported in 2007, the FBI’s most recent reporting period. Violent crimes based on sexual orientation constituted 16.6 percent of all hate crimes in 2007, with 1,265 reported for the year. In addition, while not captured in the federal statistics, transgender Americans too often live in fear of violence.

The LLEHCPA gives the Justice Department the power to investigate and prosecute bias motivated violence where the perpetrator has selected the victim because of the person's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

A wide coalition of national organizations has called for the passage of the LLEHCPA legislation. Some of those organizations supporting this legislation include: the National Sheriffs Association; International Association of Chiefs of Police; 26 state Attorneys General; the National District Attorneys Association; the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights; the Anti-Defamation League; the NAACP; the National Council of La Raza; the Presbyterian Church; the Episcopal Church; and the National Disability Rights Network.

New Hampshire state Senate votes in favor of gay marriage

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, praised the New Hampshire state Senate’s vote today in favor of legislation that would permit same-sex couples to marry. The Senate voted 13-11, on second reading, in favor of an amended version of House Bill 436, which would allow same-sex couples to marry under state law. The bill passed the House last month by a 186-179 vote. Since the Senate voted on an amended version, the bill will return to the House after third reading in the Senate.

“Just one month ago, there were only two states where same-sex couples could marry. Now, with this vote in New Hampshire, we are on the verge of having five states that recognize marriage equality for same-sex couples. It’s been quite a month, and we look forward to more states joining this group,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “We congratulate Senate President Sylvia Larsen, Senate Majority Leader Maggie Hassan and Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Deb Reynolds for their leadership in reaching a positive result. We also congratulate GLAD, PFLAG New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Freedom to Marry Coalition, the many activists, including HRC members, who have been working to build support for this legislation, and the majority of New Hampshire voters who support marriage equality.”

“The votes in the House and Senate simply recognize that same-sex couples who form committed relationships and loving families deserve the same level of respect and dignity afforded to other couples. The Senate's amendment protects the religious freedom of clergy and religious organizations, while respecting the rights of same-sex couples to protect and care for their families. I hope the House will concur with the amended version by the Senate, and that Gov. Lynch will join the legislature and the majority of New Hampshire voters and allow this important legislation to become law,” Solmonese said.

President Obama urges the passage of Hate Crimes Prevention Act

The White House issued the following statement from President Obama yesterday regarding H.R. 1913:

"This week, the House of Representatives is expected to consider H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. I urge members on both sides of the aisle to act on this important civil rights issue by passing this legislation to protect all of our citizens from violent acts of intolerance – legislation that will enhance civil rights protections, while also protecting our freedom of speech and association. I also urge the Senate to work with my Administration to finalize this bill and to take swift action."

Hats off to Mr. Ken Buck

I posted about this editorial yesterday but didn't realize it was written by Ken Buck, conservative Republican DA who is arguing IN FAVOR of the hate crimes statute, which puts him at odds with the majority of Republicans. AND he's running for Senator, and coming forward with this opinion, which is really brave of him considering his party's stance on the issue.

Maine's Joint Committee votes for gay marriage

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, praised Maine’s Joint Committee on Judiciary for its vote on Tuesday in favor of legislation that would permit same-sex couples to marry under state law. The committee voted 11-2-1 in favor of the legislation; one committee member voted for the legislation with a proposed amendment that would place the measure before voters if it is enacted into law.

“This is an exciting vote, and it’s great to see strong support for the principle that all loving, committed couples in Maine ought to have the equal right to marry,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “We congratulate the committee, as well as Equality Maine for its great work to build support for equality. We hope that this bill will soon pass the Senate and House and be enacted into law. April has been a great month for equality, and we’re thrilled to see Maine take action to become the latest state to move toward recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples.”

The Human Rights Campaign has had a field organizer on the ground in Maine for the past three months working with Equality Maine to build support for the marriage legislation. The full Senate is expected to vote on the marriage bill soon, and the House could take action in May.

A new CBS/New York Times poll released Tuesday shows that support for marriage equality across the country has risen nine points in the last month. The new poll, conducted April 22-26, 2009, shows that 42% of Americans now say that same-sex couples should be allowed to legally marry. That number is up nine points from the month earlier when only 33% support marriage equality for same-sex couples. More information on the poll can be read by going here: http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/04/27/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry4972643.shtml.

Legislatures in New Hampshire and New York are considering legislation that would permit same-sex couples to marry under state law. Maine currently provides same-sex couples with access to limited rights and benefits through a domestic partner registry. Speaking OUT about the Matthew Shepard Act

Leaders from a number of different organizations and communities communities issued the following statements in support of the Matthew Shepard Act hate crimes bill today:

“A tool such as Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act could have made it easier to prosecute those who beat Luis Ramirez to death in Pennsylvania; or the man who bludgeoned teenager Angie Zapata to death with a fire extinguisher in Colorado; or the pair who robbed, tortured and left to die, a young man named Matthew Shepard. On this call today, we urge swift passage of this important legislation to prevent these unthinkable acts of hatred and intolerance.” – Wade Henderson, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights

“State and local authorities investigate and prosecute the overwhelming majority of hate crime cases. But this essential legislation will provide a necessary backstop – by permitting federal authorities to provide assistance in these hate crime investigations and by allowing federal prosecutions when state and local authorities are unable or unwilling to act.” – Michael Lieberman, Washington Counsel for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)

“People with disabilities, especially those with mental disabilities, are often singled out for bias-motivated violence and harassment, and the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act will provide a critical tool to fight back against this despicable behavior and its impact on our community. We urge Congress to pass this legislation that will encourage more people with disabilities to report these crimes to law enforcement, and show that these acts of violence will not be tolerated.” – Andrew Imparato, President and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)

Read more after the jump.

“Not only does the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act of 2009 protect civil rights, it also protects free speech and association. This bill will have the strongest protection against the misuse of a person’s free speech that Congress has enacted in the federal criminal code.” – Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

“Seventy-five percent of all Americans regardless of their race, religion or political affiliation support this legislation. They understand that the time to get this legislation to the president’s desk is long overdue. Now is the time for Congress to again pass this bill and for President Obama to sign it into law. Ten years after the bill’s introduction, local jurisdictions continue to need the additional resources necessary to prosecute the hate violence that spreads fear and panic throughout entire communities. State and local agencies must be given the tools they need to investigate and prosecute bias-motivated crimes.” – Joe Solmonese, President of Human Rights Campaign (HRC)

“We need to strengthen existing hate crimes laws because hate crimes are such a unique offense; they are an attack not just on individuals but an attempt to terrorize and demoralize entire communities. Existing policies are inadequate, as too many African Americans are aware. Even though we make up just over 14 percent of the population, we are the subjects of roughly 60 percent of reported hate crimes. The bill we are about to consider will provide local law enforcement units with much-needed additional resources to help address, and hopefully reduce, these heinous crimes.” – Hilary O. Shelton, Director of the NAACP Washington Bureau

“The Latino community is committed to working with all groups to monitor incidents of hate crimes and hate rhetoric, to urge policymakers and the media to cease resorting to bias and bigotry, and to increase tolerance and understanding among all communities.” – Janet Murguía, President and CEO of the National Council on La Raza (NCLR)

“As a Jew, I know all too well the history of my people as victims of ethnic hatred, of discrimination, of violence. As an American, I know that overcoming such hatred, discrimination, and violence is difficult – but entirely possible. And it’s possible if we take steps like those outlined in the vital legislation we come together to support.” – Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism

Angie Zapata verdict a sign of acceptance for Colorado's transgender community?

Some say the quick arrest and hate-crime conviction of the killer of transgender teenager Angie Zapata is a sign of progress for Colorado's transgender community.

"I think we're making significant progress regarding basic understanding and education on transgender issues," said Kate Bowman of the Gender Identity Center of Colorado. "We're about 10 or 15 years behind gays, lesbians or bisexuals. Not that that community is accepted wholly."

GOP alienating younger generation with anti-gay marriage stance?

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Steve Schmidt, a senior strategist to Sen. John McCain's losing presidential effort, are among Republican leaders and strategists who believe the GOP risks alienating a younger generation of voters if it continues its hardline, anti-marriage stance. "The Republican Party is shrinking," Schmidt said. "One of the reasons it is shrinking is because there are large demographics in this country that view the party as intolerant or not relevant to them. Politics is about addition."

Suspected Craigslist killer also into men and/or transexuals?

An anonymous person from Boston - the article refers to a 'him' but it sounds like the person identifies as a transexual woman - claims to have corresponded with suspected Craigslist killer Philip Markoff on Craigslist and got some sexually explicit photos out of the deal but never met up.

Was Markoff omnisexual or just looking for more people to rob?

Sounds like this case is gonna get really interesting before it's all over. - Jezebel via World of Wonder

Majority of New Hampshire voters support gay marriage

A poll released today by New Hampshire Freedom to Marry shows that 55% of New Hampshire Voters support marriage for lesbian and gay couples, while 39% are opposed. The poll, conducted by UNH Survey Center, surveyed 491 New Hampshire voters from April 13 through the 22.

“New Hampshire has a live and let live attitude. These strong numbers in support of marriage equality are not surprising. A majority of New Hampshire voters have supported marriage equality since polling on the subject began in 2003. We hope that New Hampshire can soon join our neighbors in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, and enact marriage equality,” said Mo Baxley, Executive Director of New Hampshire Freedom To Marry.

The poll also found that 63% of Independent and 34% of Republican voters in New Hampshire support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. The poll also found that when asked only 32% would be “bothered” if gay and lesbians could get a marriage license.

House Bill 436, which would recognize marriage equality for lesbian and gay couples under New Hampshire law, passed the House of Representatives last month and is pending in the state Senate. Last week, a Senate committee voted 23 against the bill. A vote by the full Senate is expected on Wednesday.

Family and Medical Leave Inclusion Act re-introduced

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, hailed the re-introduction today of the Family and Medical Leave Inclusion Act of 2009 in the 111th Congress. The bill, sponsored by Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) (pictured), would expand the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) to include a domestic partner, parent-in-law, adult child, sibling or grandparent.

“We applaud Congresswoman Maloney for introducing legislation to expand the FMLA to cover same-sex couples and their children,” said Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign. “No one should be forced to choose between their family and their paycheck. This bill will fulfill the mission of the FMLA by protecting all working families, and we urge Congress to pass this legislation swiftly.”

For millions of workers, the FMLA has been an unprecedented success, allowing workers to take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave from work to care for a seriously ill spouse, parent or child. It has proven essential to achieving greater employee retention and reducing employee turnover.

Unfortunately, under the current law, millions of lesbian and gay Americans in committed, long-term relationships are unable to take FMLA leave to take leave to care for their same-sex partner. Because workers are not guaranteed leave to care for a partner or partner’s child without fear of losing their job, the FMLA does not fulfill its purpose of protecting working families.

The Family and Medical Leave Inclusion Act of 2009 would remedy this inequality by expanding the FMLA to permit an employee to take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave from work if his or her domestic partner or same-sex spouse has a serious health condition. Many state governments and employers have already included families headed by same-sex couples for purposes of family leave, recognizing that an inclusive workforce is a competitive workforce.

Pet of the Week: Hydro

This big boy's name is Hydro and he came from another shelter, so not much is known about him as yet. He sure love to play, though, you can tell that from his photo. He looks like he'd be an awesome buddy to take hiking or out to play in the park and he does know the 'sit' command so he's probably had some training and would be a good candidate for more.

Find out more about Hydro and the other dogs available for adoption at MaxFund.org.

HRC to participate in New York LGBT Lobby Day tomorrow

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, announced today that it will participate in the New York LGBT lobby day, tomorrow, April 28, to advocate for pro-equality legislation. HRC members and staff will discuss adding gender identity to the state’s non-discrimination law; passing legislation to make schools safer; and securing the votes for the marriage equality bill recently introduced by New York Governor David Paterson. The Human Rights Campaign has staff on the ground preparing for tomorrow’s lobby day. For the latest updates visit: http://www.hrcbackstory.org/author/ahayes/

“After last year’s elections, we have a unique opportunity to make change in New York but we need every person who supports equality to stand up and be counted,” said Human Rights Campaign National Field Director Marty Rouse. “We are committed to doing the hard work needed to secure the votes to move pro-equality bills this legislative session.”

More after the jump.
The Human Rights Campaign has encouraged its members to participate in the lobby day, which is being organized by the Empire State Pride Agenda. At this time, some 2,000 people are expected to lobby for pro-equality legislation. For a program schedule of events visit the Empire State Pride Agenda website: http://www.prideagenda.org/tabid/332/Default.aspx.

HRC’s New York leadership is currently working with coalition partners to put a face on same-sex couples in loving and committed relationships who are being denied access to full marriage equality. Through letter writing campaigns, visits with legislators and conversations with friends, family, and neighbors, HRC and its membership in the state are engaged in an active effort to demonstrate the clear need for all couples in loving and committed relationships to have the right to marry.

In the 2008 election season, HRC worked to elect three fair-minded senate candidates in the New York state Senate, including Brian Foley (SD-03) and Joe Addabbo (SD-15), helping to change control of the Senate. In addition, HRC trained more than 50 people in it’s Camp Equality™ election skills training held on Long Island. In all, HRC New York PAC contributed over $120,000 and had two field staffers, plus a campaign college staffer on the ground.

In January of 2007, HRC helped elect Senator Craig Johnson on Long Island in a special election. The election was considered the tipping point for the Democratic takeover of the New York State Senate, as the seat was held by Republicans for over 100 years. HRC sent Regional Field Director Sultan Shakir and another staffer to the district to help increase fair-minded turnout in the district, resulting in a 54 to 46 win for Johnson.

Oh, Dolph!

Family photos of Dolph Lundgren have the power to send thieves skedaddling.

That's badass.

In other news, Dolph Lundgren is Number 3 on my All-Time Favorites list of men. He comes in right behind Joe Dallessandro (#1) and Shemar Moore (#2).

I used to have a 'Playboy' with Dolph and Grace Jones both naked in it. They were boyfriend/girlfriend at the time.

Man I wish I still had that 'Playboy.'

Downtown Denver is a 'Walker's Paradise'

Just found out about www.walkscore.com over at Kenneth in the 212 and had to plug in good old Downtown Denver to see what kind of a walkability score we'd get. Looks like a totally awesome 97 out of 100 - which is considered a 'Walker's Paradise' - and I'd have to agree.

Spent some time walking the streets last week and food, shopping, and entertainment are never more than a few steps in any direction.

Although, I'd have to take issue with Walkscore's designation of Romantix as a Movie Theater.

And points of gay interest on your walking tour of downtown Denver would have to include the Denver Wrangler, Hamburger Mary's, Charlie's and JR's.

Hey, walking's thirsty work.

Check out your neighborhood here.
