Minority set-asides for gay firms are pondered in Chicago

The possibility of trying to include set-asides for LGBT firms under Chicago's minority-contracting awards has been broached by out Alderman Tom Tunney. Although the city is open to exploring the concept, the set-asides may not be fully supported by the LGBT community.

"We know we've been disadvantaged," Tunney said. "But, there are programs for women already. And the perception is this would only enhance gay white males. That's why there's not consensus within our community."

Catholics good for gay rights?

States with a higher percentage of Catholics have a greater likelihood of backing LGBT rights, according to new research. Mark Silk, head of the Leonard E. Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life at Trinity College, found "six of the eight states where 50% or more of the public supports gay marriage are the states with the highest proportion of Catholics."

How do you solve a problem like Don't Ask, Don't Tell?

LGBT-rights leaders in the nation's capital and their supporters in Congress have focused too much on a legislative repeal of the military gay ban and have not pushed hard enough for the policy to be suspended by a presidential executive order, a report from the Palm Center has found. However, the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, Human Rights Campaign and Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Pa., among others, believe the goal should be a permanent reversal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy via a congressional vote.

"The end goal here -- the ultimate prize -- is to undo current law and replace it with a nondiscrimination policy," said SLDN's Kevin Nix.

Is Twitter over already?

I hope so. I just got signed up and hopefully this whole awful thing will go away before I ever have to tweet my first tweet.

Battlestar Galactica spin-off to feature gay characters

World's best fanboy/girl site IO9.com reports that 'Battlestar Galactica' spinoff 'Caprica' will be featuring some major gay characters:

The SyFy Channel got a "failing" grade for its depiction of gay characters, and promised to do better — for one thing, there's Ming-Na's lesbian character on Stargate Universe, and her wife, played by Reiko Aylesworth. But also, it turns out one of the major characters on Caprica is gay and has a husband — and it's a "goodfella" type gangster, who's a stereotypically macho leg-breaker. (And AfterElton thinks this character is Sam Adama, Joseph's brother and Bill's uncle. Which would make sense, since Sam's spouse is named Larry.) Separately, another major Caprica character is actually in a group marriage, with both men and women. And in all these cases, the character's sexuality isn't made into a big deal, says SyFy's Mark Stern.

The Watching Hour at Starz

Curated by Keith Garcia, Programming Manager for the Denver Film Society, THE WATCHING HOUR will focus its eye on films that other theaters are too afraid to show.

Following the success of last year's zombies-on-film celebration, THE WATCHING HOUR continues the party with THE DEAD OF SUMMER presents: as a banner spotlighting the best in new and classic takes on the undead genre the first weekend of every month. Kicking things off August 7 & 8 will be the amazing Canadian tweak on the genre, PONTYPOOL, which follows a small town running from a zombie virus hidden in the words being broadcast from a local radio station.

Filling in the remaining coveted spots every weekend will be the best of genre films new and old including recent controversial festival-circuit hits DEADGIRL (Aug 14 & 15) and GRACE (Aug 21 & 22) and occasional spotlights on special themes starting with THE WIZARDS OF OZ-PLOITATION, a peek at a handful of the best exploitation films produced in Australia in the 1970s and 80s as featured in the documentary NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD (returning to Denver August 14). NQH was a roaring success at THE WATCHING HOUR during SDFF31 and our salute to these films from "down under" begins August 28 & 29 with RAZORBACK, one of the Ozploitation genre's most notorious entries. Directed by Russell Mulcahy (HIGHLANDER) the film features some of the most beautiful outback cinematography you've ever seen a crazed, giant, blood-thirsty wild boar run through.

Does the queer case of the gay penguins say anything about human sexuality?

Newsy.com takes a look at the queer case of the penguin love triangle.

The Great Nationwide Kiss-In: Denver

Two gay rights bloggers have joined forces with the international grassroots LGBT organization, Join the Impact, to create “The Great Nationwide Kiss‐In,” to affirm the right of all couples – same‐sex and opposite sex – to publicly acknowledge their loved‐ones, with a kiss.

In response to recent events in three different U.S. cities, where gay or lesbian couples have been harassed, and detained or arrested, for the simple act of kissing in a public space, David Badash (of The New Civil Rights Movement and The Bilerico Project), David Mailloux (of DYM SUM), and Willow Witte (Co‐Founder and Director of Join the Impact) have partnered on this first‐ever coast‐to‐coast “Kiss‐In.”

The Great Nationwide Kiss‐In will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 12 p.m., Mountain Time. Badash’s original vision for the event will have hundreds of couples – gay and straight – showing this simple, innocent form of affection for one another in popular public locations throughout the United States.

“Both gay and straight couples should be able to kiss whomever they like, wherever they like,” Badash said. “If you want to give your better‐half a kiss, or hold their hand while walking down the street, you should be able to, without fear of intimidation or incarceration. Lord knows, the world could use a lot more love, and a lot more people displaying acts of love, affection, and kindness.”

Gay activists and bloggers throughout the country, as well as couples arrested, have said that the recent incidents involving gay and lesbian couples kissing in San Antonio, and El Paso, TX, as well as Salt Lake City, UT were entirely related to their sexual orientation.

Soulforce in Colorado has taken the lead for organizing the Denver event with the location to be determined.

HRC launches 'No Excuses'

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today launched a national, grassroots campaign called “No Excuses” to demand action from Congress on key issues of equality. Designed to take advantage of the congressional summer recess, when members are in their local offices and meeting with constituents, “No Excuses” will mobilize HRC's 750,000 members and their allies to meet directly with lawmakers and push for federal legislative change.

“While we salute and acknowledge the heroic members of Congress who have worked tirelessly on our behalf, far too many have dragged their feet on basic matters of fairness and equality that have lingered too long and hurt too many LGBT people and their families,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “Yes, there are many challenges facing this Congress and this president. But LGBT people often face additional hardship protecting their families, their loved ones and their jobs, and too few in Congress are willing to champion these issues of basic fairness. Now, more than ever, members of the LGBT community need to make their voices heard face-to-face and in the districts where they live.”

Using innovative online tools, one-on-one trainings and staff and volunteer follow-through, HRC members will press lawmakers to end discrimination in the military, treat all legally married couples equally, pass immigration reform that recognizes and honors LGBT families, outlaw workplace discrimination for LGBT employees, and treat all federal employees' compensation equally.

The interactive “No Excuses” website allows supporters to download a meeting toolkit, schedule a meeting and report back on how it went. To take action, visit: http://noexcuses.hrc.org.

AMG Beefcake app for the iPhone

Athletic Model Guild announced the recent release of its second iPhone app, “AMG Beefcake!”.

“AMG Beefcake!” displays the best of beefcake photography pioneer - and AMG founder - Bob Mizer’s work in a high quality virtual gallery. Users can download, set as wallpaper, or share over 150 historical images from a time when male nudity was not only frowned upon, but also illegal.

“AMG Beefcake!” is available for only 99¢ in the iTunes app store. The images, selected from a collection that includes nearly 1 million individual photographs, show bodybuilders, military men, and blue-collar workers from the turn of the 20th century, clad in posing straps, briefs, and bathing suits. Dennis Bell, the studio’s president, said the app is a reflection of the iconic style that made AMG an inspiration to gay artists and audiences the world over.

“Bob’s black and white work has become synonymous with a certain period in gay photography,” Bell said. “We wanted to celebrate his photography, but at the same time move it forward by delivering some of his best work on a 21st century platform."

Obama names Medal of Freedom Recipients - list includes Harvey Milk and Billie Jean King

President Obama today named 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. America’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

They have blazed trails and broken down barriers. They have discovered new theories, launched new initiatives, and opened minds to new possibilities.

President Obama said, “These outstanding men and women represent an incredible diversity of backgrounds. Their tremendous accomplishments span fields from science to sports, from fine arts to foreign affairs. Yet they share one overarching trait: Each has been an agent of change. Each saw an imperfect world and set about improving it, often overcoming great obstacles along the way.

“Their relentless devotion to breaking down barriers and lifting up their fellow citizens sets a standard to which we all should strive. It is my great honor to award them the Medal of Freedom.”

Xena shouldn't wear her hair like that

My goddess, my love, my all, my Lucy Lawless was interviewed by EW's Michael Ausiello at Comic-Con about her new role on Starz's new gladiator series Spartacus. She talks about the show's full-frontal nudity and sex scenes, being fitted for a merkin, and whether she'd ever return as Xena (she would!).

She's fun but she shouldn't wear her hair like that. And that Michael Aussiello is just adorable.

Here's some information about the show from www.LucyLawless.info:

The world of gladiators comes to life as the Roman Empire's most brutal fighters clash in the ultimate arena. Starz's new series, "Spartacus," an entirely new twist on the ancient legend, will utilize virtual environments giving it a unique graphic novel look and style, along with a fresh narrative approach. Debuting exclusively on Starz, "Spartacus" will be produced by Starz Media with Executive Producers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Joshua Donen. The announcement was made today by Stephan Shelanski, executive vice president, programming, for Starz Entertainment. It will begin production in early 2009, debuting on Starz and its suite of channels later in the year.

Sounds like it could be good.

They just better have a part for Renee O'Connor!

Hut to hut in British Columbia

In the mood for a travel experience that's a little out of the ordinary?

Wells Gray Provincial Park, nestled in the province's Cariboo Mountains, offers more than a riot of alpine wildflowers in summer months. Think cool blue lakes, mountainous peaks, a rush of rivers and local residents a little on the wild side. In all, sights best seen hut to hut with the outdoor crew at Wells Gray Adventures.

And with 1.4 million acres of lush countryside, Wells Gray, north of Kamloops, provides the perfect playground for multi-day excursions.

Each outing begins with a simple plan: equipped with a small pack, adventurists hike from remote cabin to remote cabin (in all, three are linked along the trail), during sustainable, low-impact tours. Days are fêted out-of-doors; al fresco menus, insight into local plant and animal wildlife courtesy of nature-loving guides, and occasions ideal for snapping scrapbook-worthy shots fill days.

Alpine evenings are spent snug in rustic cabins - each mindfully constructed to allow ecologically sound access to the region's sensitive high country.

Looking to shorten the trek? Grab the gals for a weekend escape to Trophy Mountain Chalet for a splash in cold mountain lakes and hikes within high peaks. Or grab an oar, ready the canoes, and lap it up with one- to 14-day dips in either cool Clearwater or oh-so-blue Azure Lake. Here's a light and delicious recipe I got from a Facebook pal of mine.

Wish me luck.

I am no kind of a cook at all.

HBO tops GLAAD'S Network Index

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today released its third annual Network Responsibility Index, a report that maps the quantity, quality and diversity of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people on television. Primetime programming on the five broadcast networks was evaluated as well as original primetime programming on 10 of the highest-rated cable networks.

HBO scored the highest rating of the 15 networks evaluated with LGBT characters on shows including 'True Blood', 'The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency' and 'Entourage' that reflect the ethnic and racial diversity of the LGBT community. Of HBO's 14 original series, 10 included LGBT content and 42 percent of the network's total programming hours included LGBT representation.

See more results and a link to the full report after the jump.

"This year programming was not only inclusive of LGBT people, but networks like HBO are beginning to reflect the broad diversity within our community," said Rashad Robinson, Senior Director of Media Programs at GLAAD. "With upcoming fall programming and new storylines there is a tremendous opportunity for networks to share the stories of all members of our community including lesbian, bisexual and transgender people as well as LGBT people of color, all groups which continue to be underrepresented across all networks."

GLAAD reviewed a total of 4,901 hours of primetime programming for inclusion of LGBT characters or issues on the five major networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. GLAAD also examined 1,212.5 hours of original primetime programming on 10 highly-rated cable networks. Each hour was reviewed for on-screen LGBT representations. Based on the quantity, overall quality and diversity of these representations, a rating was assigned by GLAAD's Entertainment Media Program to each network: Excellent,Good, Adequate, or Failing.

Additional findings from the GLAAD Network Responsibility Index:

Good
- HBO and Showtime received grades of Good, with HBO leading with 42 percent of programming hours featuring LGBT representations.
- ABC, with shows including Brothers & Sisters, Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty, again received the highest ranking of the five broadcast networks, earning a Good grade with 24 percent of their primetime programming hours including LGBT representations.
- The CW also received a grade of Good, with 20 percent of their primetime programming hours including LGBT representations.
Adequate
- While Fox received an Adequate, rising from last place and a Failing grade in 2008; 11 percent of its programming hours were LGBT-inclusive, yet some of those hours included problematic content.
- Among cable networks evaluated, TNT showed the largest growth, jumping from one percent of LGBT inclusive primetime programming hours last year to 19 percent. FX posted the sharpest decline, dropping 32 percent over the previous season. Both were graded
Failing
- NBC and CBS received Failing grades, for their 8 and 5 percent, respectively, of programming hours with LGBT images. CBS moved down from third place in last year's GLAAD Network Responsibility Index to last among the five major broadcast networks.
- A&E, Sci Fi and TBS received grades of Failing.
"Television shows that weave our stories into the fabric of the series present richer, more accurate representations and are the kinds of images that help Americans understand and embrace their LGBT family members, friends and neighbors in a more meaningful way," said Robinson.

The third annual GLAAD Network Responsibility Index was delivered to programming executives at the 15 graded networks, and GLAAD's Entertainment Media Program will continue discussions with them to advocate for improvements in the quality, quantity and diversity of their LGBT representations.

The Executive Summary and full report can be viewed online at www.glaad.org/nri2009.

Books: Aiden Shaw's Sordid Truths

Adult film superstar Aiden Shaw follows up his bestselling memoir My Undoing with a prequel that charts the author’s meteoric rise to becoming the highest paid star in gay adult films

Sordid Truths: Selling My Innocence for a Taste of Stardom chronicles the author’s ascent from being just another broke college boy, who dabbled with the idea that he could sell his young body for hard cash, to becoming the internationally renowned adult film superstar. Within a short time on the scene he was something of a celebrity within his field, having been introduced to wealthy, weird, and wonderful eccentrics and famous—and famously closeted—Euro trash personalities and the celebrated elite. However, working as a prostitute turned minor league once gay adult film legend Chi Chi La Rue took Poloroids of the naked and aroused Shaw and launched his career. The rest is history, as is documented in more than fifty films that won him numerous honors.

Hate not a motive in killing of San Diego sailor?

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Campos has been charged by the Navy with murder, arson and 14 other counts in the June 30 shooting death of Seaman August Provost, who was gay, at Camp Pendleton near San Diego. The slaying, the Navy said, was not motivated by the Provost's sexual orientation.

Author E. Lynn Harris has died

This is unexpected and sad news:

With great sadness, I report that New York Times bestselling author E. Lynn Harris passed away on Thursday, July 23, while on tour for his eleventh novel.

I don't know many details yet, but it's believed it was a heart attack.

I've spoken with Lisa Moore of Redbone Press and Don Weise of Alyson, both of whom knew him well, and we're all just stunned.

I worked with Lynn for over ten years as his editor and came to be his personal friend as well, so this loss strikes very close for me. Lynn had a very big heart, which he revealed in his storytelling and in his interaction with his audience. Attending a Lynn Harris reading was a family affair, and there were always flowers, tears, and loads of laughter. His novels often changed his reader's lives, and he truly was grateful for his ability to help people. I will miss him, his laughter and his big heart.

Sincerely,

Who says Denver isn't 'fun'?

According to The Wall Street Journal, employees of the Federal government are being steered away from 'fun cities' like Las Vegas and Orlando to more "buttoned-down" places like Denver and St. Louis for conferences.

Rude.

Denver is fun!
