Broncos discover potential weapons

The Broncos dropped to 0-3 this preseason, falling 27-17 to the Bears in their first 2009 appearance at INVESCO Field at Mile High. While the result was not what Head Coach Josh McDaniels or his team wanted, more potential weapons were discovered in the third game of the exhibition slate.

Trailing 17-3 at halftime, the Broncos' offense found its footing behind rookie Tom Brandstater. Brandstater engineered the first touchdown drive of his pro career - nine plays, 61 yards - with a little help from the legs of Peyton Hillis, who scored on a two-yard run. That score was set up by a 19-yard passing connection between Brandstater and Brandon Lloyd, which put the Broncos in a 1st and goal at the 1-yard line.

After the Bears got a touchdown of their own, the Broncos responded again with another big play through the air by Brandstater. He found fellow rookie Kenny McKinley, on a 54-yard strike, marking the longest completion by any of the five quarterbacks in tonight's contest. Five plays later, Darius Walker scampered into the end zone, pulling the Broncos to within a one-possession deficit.

For a look back at all of the biggest plays at INVESCO Field at Mile High, visit the official Denver Broncos blog.

Boulder's gay history

Boulder’s 150-year history holds stories of many groups, some well known and some relatively hidden from view. CU's GLBT Alumni group will make the hidden more visible when they discuss gay history in Boulder County at a colloquium on September 26 on the CU-Boulder campus followed by a reception at the Koenig Alumni Center.

Tim Fuller--a closeted gay city councilman who was recalled in 1974 in an angry election reacting to the council’s granting protections for gay, lesbian and bisexual citizens--will keynote the event. The Saturday afternoon colloquium will feature Fuller and a panel of close observers of the history of gayness in Boulder County that includes the city, the University, the school district and state.

The colloquium and reception are sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender chapter of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association with the support of a grant from The Open Door Fund and assistance from IBM Boulder and the CU-Boulder Office of Counseling and Psychological Services.

Hardball 6.0 - Hit a home run for charity!

Hardball 6.0 has arrived, and it’s time to dust off your spikes, find your old glove, pick up your baseball bat, and hit a home run for charity.

Hardball was originated in 2003 by Jared Polis and Josh Metnick, and has been rotated and played annually in either the Chicagoland area or Colorado.

The charity chosen for this year’s event is Community Computer Connection (C3). C3 has been refurbishing computers since 2001 and has distributed over 17,000 computers to more than 130 schools and 470 organizations across Colorado.

“This is a really special event for everybody each year— pulling together a pick-up soccer, basketball or even football game doesn’t require all that much – but after most of us reach eighteen years of age, or even after little league, playing an actual game of baseball requires significant planning to do it right. It is not every day you get to play in a real minor league stadium, with real minor league umpires. And, it is all for a great cause. Many of us who play in the tournament owe much of their career successes to early exposure to computers and programming, and it is good to give back in the same manner,” says Josh Metnick, one of the event co-founders.

This year’s event will be played in the Chicagoland area at the Windy City Thunderbolts stadium in Crestwood, IL (http://windycitythunderbolts.com). It will be a one-day best of three game tournament, held on October 3.

Players interested in registering to play for Hardball 2009 may do so at www.heilio.com/baseball2009. The cost to play is a tax-deductible $125 which includes uniform, lunch, and the amenities provided by the Thunderbolts (umpires, staffed press box, extra equipment, grounds-keeping, etc.)

Shakespeare comes to Logo

Logo takes on The Bard with a new interpretation of the classic Shakespeare comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with film festival favorite and award-winning film “Were the World Mine.” One of the most buzz-worthy gay films in years, this playful movie musical will premiere Monday, September 7 on Logo and on LOGOonline.com.

“Were the World Mine” tells the story of Timothy: a bullied gay student at an all-boy private high school struggling to fit in with his peers while helping his mother accept his sexuality. Things seem all the makings of a Shakespearian tragedy for Timothy until the school play is announced by his mystical, bohemian English teacher, Ms. Tebbit (Wendy Robie, Twin Peaks). Timothy is cast as “Puck” in the school’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” allowing him to get closer to his crush Jonathan, a straight jock, who is cast as one of the play’s lead roles.

As an escape from the cruel realities of high school, Timothy transcends into a world of song and spectacle. However, Timothy’s life crosses the boundaries of reality and fantasy when he follows a “Cupid’s love” potion in his script and quickly discovers that anyone sprayed by this mystical potion falls in love with the first person of the same sex they see. Before long, the streets in Timothy’s homophobic town are inundated with lovelorn gay and lesbian couples, creating mayhem amongst his friends, family and neighbors. Both the town and Timothy learn a lesson in tolerance and ultimate acceptance as Timothy tries to repair the mischief he unleashed.

Vintage Homophobia: Boys Beware

Mixed in among useful tips such as "don't hitchhike" and "stay with your friends" are the following nuggets of information you may not have been aware of:

1. All homosexuals are not passive, some resort to violence.

2. Public restrooms can often be a hangout for the homosexual.

3. Homosexuality is a dangerous and contagious sickness of the mind.

4. One never knows when the homosexual is about, he may appear normal and it may be too late when you discover he is mentally ill.

Pet of the Week: Jimmy

My name is Jimmy and I am a happy, handsome husky mix and am not even a year old yet.

I am a friendly, laid-back dog. I like other friendly dogs – especially those about my size. I walk calmly on a leash and I enjoy being gently petted. I am easy going – for example I just lie down if someone wants to interrupt our walk by stopping to talk to the human - I am also fine with being brushed, which is a good thing since I will need periodic grooming because I have a thick double coat that keeps me warm in cold Colorado winters.

For more information about Jimmy or any of the other wonderful pets available for adoption at MaxFund please visit www.MaxFund.org.

Who Would You Do? Joe Francis versus Brody Jenner

Joe Francis (left) is known as well-known for his bizarre personal issues and many lawsuits as he is for creating 'Girls Gone Wild'. Brody Jenner (right) is known as the son of Olympian Bruce Jenner and for starring on bad reality TV like "Princes of Hollywood" and 'Bromance". The two former friends got into a nasty altercation early last Friday morning that began with a thrown drink and ended with one of them getting tasered.

Who won the fight is something nobody can say for sure but "Who Would You Do?" is a question that can easily be answered. Which one do you think is hotter? Who would you do?

Check out lots more pics of both guys after the jump.

Stuart Milk (pictured), the out nephew of LGBT-rights pioneer Harvey Milk, in a guest blog post for The Bilerico Project calls on California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign into law a bill that would create a Harvey Milk Day in public schools.

Schwarzenegger, who vetoed a similar bill last year, is inducting Harvey Milk into the California Hall of Fame.

The latter, Stuart Milk writes, "is an important symbol that truly needs to be backed up by an annual day offering the opportunity for education and celebration of the diversity that makes California great."

19 years of gay history on video

Andy Humm of the Gay City News reports that New York University's Fales Library has acquired over 19 years worth of gay-related video footage from the Gay Cable Network for their archives.

What a treasure trove that must be.

Follow this link to a Gay Cable Network Archive promotional spot on YouTube to find out more about the GCN.

And Colorado's got our own treasure trove of gay history in the form of thousands of hours of footage from the old Lambda Report - later Colorado Out Spoken - which was, at one time, the longest running gay public access show in the country.

Last I heard Colorado Out Spoken was still on hiatus but hopefully they'll make it to the airwaves again sometime soon.

Entertainment Weekly has published its list of Top 25 Hotties of '09 and it is lousy with sexy - and openly gay - stars like Neil Patrick Harris, John Barrowman, and Zachary Quinto.

Actually, now that I'm searching the internet for proof of Quinto's gayness, I'm not finding any so it might be that he's straight ( I don't think so) but Neil and John definitely are gay.

HRC's 'Out in Scripture' collection

For the past three years, week-by-week, the HRC Religion & Faith program provided conversations on Bible passages from more than 100 scholars and pastors representing 11 denominations. These conversations are now available in a complete collection online at www.hrc.org/Scripture.

“This unique collection showcases the extraordinary momentum we’re seeing by people of faith committed to LGBT equality,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “Through this resource we are helping to assure that no one will again have to choose between who they are and what they believe.”

“Over the years my spiritual life and preaching has been transformed by ‘Out In Scripture,’” said Harry Knox, Director of HRC’s Religion and Faith Program. “This is one of our signature projects. As editor Sidney Fowler said, ‘The Bible is not about beating you up, but lifting us all up. It includes the seeds of liberation and justice.’ Be prepared to be transformed as well.”

The collection includes 175 conversations that span Bible readings organized according to the Revised Common Lectionary. The lectionary is used by numerous Christian denominations to guide worship and preaching.

New Jersey next for gay marriage?

Marriage equality is expected to take center stage in New Jersey this fall when lawmakers are likely to consider a bill to convert the Garden State's civil-unions law for same-sex couples into one offering equal marriage rights to all couples. The Legislature is likely to take up the issue after the Nov. 3 election and prior to the start of the new session in January, according to this article.
