Survey shows gays optimistic about economy

Due to the historic recession, fears of unemployment and job security remain central concerns for many American households including lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender (LGBT) households. However, there are signs that LGBT adults continue to remain more optimistic about the future of the job market.

A new nationwide survey conducted still shows fully three-quarters (75%) of heterosexual adults and 64% of LGBT adults rate the job market in their region of the country as either “very bad” or “somewhat bad.” However, one in four (27%) of LGBT adults, believe the job market will start to improve within the next six months, compared with just 12% of heterosexual adults.

LGBT adults were also more hopeful about the overall economy. One-fifth (21%) of LGBT adults believe the economy will start growing again within the next six months, compared with just 10% of heterosexual adults.

The survey of 2,509 U.S. adults, (ages 18 and over), of whom 336 self identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender, was conducted online between March 1 and 8, 2010, by Harris Interactive, a global market research and consulting firm, in conjunction with Witeck-Combs Communications, Inc., a strategic public relations and marketing communications firm with special expertise in the LGBT market. Note that this survey also was conducted before Congress voted in support of national health care reform legislation.

Read more after the jump.

The survey also showed that only one in five (20%) of lesbian and gay adults, when thinking about their household’s financial condition, say that they expect it to get worse in the next 6 months, compared with 32% of heterosexual adults. This is a significant decrease from May 2008 when 36% of lesbian and gay adults expected their household’s financial condition to get worse. In May 2008 31% of heterosexual adults felt the same way.

“We have tracked measures of market confidence over the past two years’ deteriorating economy. We also know that LGBT households are facing the same or in many instances, more challenging financial pressures than their counterparts,” said Wesley Combs, President of Witeck-Combs Communications. “Nonetheless, there are unmistakable trends among LGBT consumers that show consistently higher confidence in the U.S. economy and future job growth. Marketers will be smart to keep this in mind when planning their strategies in the next two years.”

Combs added, “It’s also clear that LGBT households are as susceptible as others to the economic risks of this recession. Most remain vulnerable to widespread forms of legal discrimination that tear into the protections afforded others through safety net programs. That understood, their consistent expressions of confidence in the economy are all the more significant.”

Mile High Club here I come!

Ever thought of becoming a member of the Mile High Club? Boy Butter (I know, right?) has now made it that much easier to join the erotic elite with the release of the brand’s new 3 oz., TSA-approved tubs of personal lubricant, and smaller sample packets of its other lines, that passengers can bring on-board an aircraft.

"I created the TSA-approved tubs because I wanted people to have an easy way to carry lube wherever they travel," says Boy Butter creator Eyal Feldman (above). "Lube can be expensive, and it often comes sold in big tubes. These tubs are perfect for travel, and can fit in any carry-on bag."

At only 24 years of age, New York entrepreneur Eyal Feldman set out to create a personal male lubricant that would be as slick and long-lasting as silicon-based lubricants and clean up as easily as those that are water-based. He found his answer in a vegetable oil and silicone fusion-based product he termed Boy Butter, which became an instant hit and has steadily gained mainstream popularity, earning the brand coverage in places such as 'Saturday Night Live,' 'Tonight Show with Jay Leno,' 'MadTV,' 'Comedy Central's Daily Show' and 'Talk Soup' on E!

LGBT workers still lack workplace protections in most states

The passage of a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing and the workplace in Kalamazoo, Mich., still leaves workers vulnerable to being fired because they are gay or lesbian because the state is one of 29 without such anti-bias protections on the books. But laws such as these serve a larger purpose, according to Bernadette Brown, policy director of the Triangle Foundation.

"They acknowledge that LGBT people are valuable members of the community, and that our risk of discrimination and harassment is increased simply because of who we are, and that's unfair," Brown said.

This year's GLAAD Media Awards to be the most glamourous ever

Openly gay recording artist Adam Lambert will perform at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards Presented in Los Angeles by ABSOLUT® Vodka on April 17, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

The GLAAD Media Awards elevate and promote fair, accurate and inclusive stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, people and allies that have increased awareness, understanding and respect for the lives of LGBT people. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories of LGBT people and issues that build support for equality.

Lambert's debut album, 'For Your Entertainment', debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. He is nominated this year for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Artist.

"GLAAD has advocated for out music artists, including myself, and I am proud to be part of the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards this year," said Adam Lambert. "GLAAD's work to share stories that grow acceptance and understanding about the gay and transgender community is so important in our culture today."

GLAAD also confirmed that Constance McMillen, the 18-year-old student from Fulton, Mississippi whose high school cancelled a prom rather than permit McMillen to attend with her girlfriend, would be presenting Wanda Sykes with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, McMillen filed suit against her school, asking them to reinstate the prom for everyone, without discrimination. This week, a federal judge in Mississippi ruled that while he wouldn't force the school to hold a prom but agreed that McMillen's First Amendment rights had been violated.

Golden Globe-winning actress Drew Barrymore will be honored with the Vanguard Award at the Los Angeles ceremony.

Candis Cayne and Wilson Cruz will host the event. Other guests and presenters scheduled to attend include cast members from Glee, Tom Ford ('A Single Man'), Eric Dane ('Valentine's Day', 'Grey's Anatomy'), Jason Lewis ('Sex & the City'), Sofia Vergara ('Modern Family'), Chaz Bono, Benjamin Bratt ('La Mission'), RuPaul ('RuPaul's Drag Race'), Bryan Batt ('Mad Men'), Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Elizabeth Keener, Clementine Ford ('The L Word') and Countess LuAnn de Lesseps ('Real Housewives of New York City').

Bob Witeck's Top 10 Reasons to Take Part in the 2010 Census

TOP 10 REASONS WHY I AM TAKING PART IN THE 2010 CENSUS
by Bob Witeck

A couple of weeks ago, our Census form arrived. As promised.

I wasn’t really surprised since the Census sent us a postcard telling us to expect it.

My husband and I planned to respond, but then figured we should probably take down our Christmas decorations first. Not to mention cleaning up after our New Year’s Party (I’m just kidding, we didn’t have a New Year’s Party and everyone knows that habitual procrastinators don’t need real excuses anyway.)

It did occur to me, however, that before we actually fill out the Census form, I should come up with the top 10 reasons why I ought to do it today. And that will buy me a just a little more time to think about it.

Check out the list after the jump.

10. Congress requires us to respond to the Census just once every 10 years.

Well, it actually begins with our Constitution, which tells Congress to conduct a complete and accurate count of the American people every decade. After all, when you write and pass laws, it probably helps to know how many lives you touch, and how to improve them.

I have to admit following the rules isn’t as hard for me since I sat in first grade with Sister Mary Saint Mark. If you crossed a storm trooper with a nun, well, you get the idea. She was the law.

9. The Census is one of the best ways to make sure federal funding is shared and spent in fair proportions.

This is simple. My family included 2 parents, 4 sisters and 2 brothers when I was growing up, and every dinner, and especially every dessert was divided 9 ways. If we failed to count portions accurately, then I risked losing my equal 1/9th share of the prize.

Okay, we’re adults now, but the idea is actually pretty much the same. Federal dollars support highways and schools, medical facilities and environmental protections, many smart ways that fix or improve the services and facilities we have in our communities. Who doesn’t want a fair return for the taxes we pay?

8. Everyone’s doing it. Answering the Census, that is.

The 2010 Census forms have been sent to every address in America, and everywhere they can find people. It’s not easy, but they have made an amazing effort this year in countless languages and to many of the most distant and unusual places to invite us to fill out our forms.

What makes me most proud is that they’ve made an historic commitment this year to include all LGBT households as never before. They have dedicated many field specialists and contacts to work within our community groups to educate and recruit help, and we have even worked with our Census folks to establish a unique public education campaign, “Our Families Count” (www.ourfamiliescount.org) that couldn’t make it any easier to find out everything we all need to know.

7. Same-sex couples really do count.

Some of us are annoyed that not one of the questions in this year’s Census asks about sexual orientation, or about gender identity and expression. While there are questions about gender and about race and ethnicity, they won’t yet ask us if we also call ourselves lesbian, gay, or bisexual, for example.

I hope one day they will, but in the meantime, this year for the first time ever the Census form will enable many of us living in same-sex committed relationships to answer honestly and accurately how we define our intimate relationship with one another. I have been with my own husband for 15 years, and I regret we cannot yet lawfully marry nor register even as partners in our state – but that doesn’t stop us from telling the Census that not only are we adult partners of the same sex, but we also consider ourselves husbands. (And for my coupled lesbian friends, they can call themselves wives on the Census form.)

Some same-sex couples may not think of themselves as husbands (or as wives), and instead wish to answer that question by calling themselves “unmarried partners,” as they choose. That’s a perfectly fine choice too.

And in doing so, we will be able to be counted as we live, and described more accurately in the way we see each other. That is a major step forward, and why the 2010 Census probably matters most to me and my husband.

6. For transgender Americans, why not be yourselves too?

I cherish my friends who are transgender. They also tell me they have faced many more struggles than I have to be themselves and to be seen and accepted as the gender they are. And not necessarily the gender that was recorded on their birth certificate or often on their driver’s license.

But the Census doesn’t define you, you define yourself. If you live as a man, regardless of the driver’s license you may have or another piece of identification, be confident to tell the Census that you are a male. If you live as a woman, and regardless what your license or another identification card may say about you, then tell the Census you are a female.

I can’t say for sure but I think that is very liberating too, and one more way under the law, that we can truthfully be ourselves.

5. Our answers are private. Really.

I’ve checked the federal laws, and spoken with the folks at the Census. The brief information we share on the form is not shared with others. By law, our response is protected and used only for its intended purpose and that is to achieve an accurate count. It will not be shared with law enforcement authorities, immigration authorities or tax officers. No one else.

Some of us have reason to be anxious when we know other promises made are not always promises kept, laws or no laws. I’ve thought it over, and one way to ease our minds would be to keep supporting and sending contributions to some of the top legal rights and privacy watchdogs like the ACLU and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund – because I am confident they will also look out for us.

4. It’s easy. I mean so easy.

Let’s face it. For some of us sudoku is hard (my hand is up). So is completing the New York Times crossword puzzle and the 1040 IRS form. It’s easy to put off those challenges, since they tax the brain and really take time with no guarantee of success.

But the 2010 Census really is only ten questions in less than ten minutes. When my husband and I glanced at the form, and both of us prepared to answer it – the hardest thing for us was to decide who is Person 1 and who is Person 2 on the form!

I wish the U.S. Census would spend the next nine years rewriting our tax forms now.

3. By filling out the form and mailing it back, we can save millions of dollars.

Really? Yep, I checked. For each of us who takes the ten minutes to fill out our form and send it back, that just means the fewer doors to knock on, the fewer sidewalks and neighborhoods to navigate and the need to recruit and pay fewer workers to ask us to fill out forms in person.

That makes perfect sense, and if we save some dollars for the federal government, I hope that means we can save tax dollars and even benefit other programs that we really do care about.

2. When LGBT households answer the Census, it makes some people mad.

Huh? Well, imagine our adversaries and those leaders and organizations that are most adamant that we be denied our full, equal rights. Or tell us just to stay in the closet and never be seen, nor heard, nor counted. Some even have complained to the U.S. Census that we should not be counted as same-sex couples or as married couples under law in those jurisdictions where marriage equality is a fact.

For generations, many Americans have been spoon-fed lies and distortions about who we are, where and how we live. They often don’t want to believe that some of us are raising children or living next door to them, and they believe wrongly that we all are rich and privileged and mostly undeserving of equal respect and rights.

The Census is perhaps the one best way to put an end to some of the myths and distortions and to educate everyone about our families. I say it’s payback.

And finally, the Number One and best reason, having our community count fully and truthfully in the Census community is rewarding.

How can it not be? When we count ourselves, we count to others.

For years, we have fought injustice and inequality by standing up for ourselves and by being visible. Coming out is a first step in terms of acceptance and inclusion, and the best way that unfair barriers in workplace discrimination or the ban on serving openly in our military will be repealed.

The Census is not yet a perfect way to count all of us, but it is a real start. It is now and it will long be the gold standard in helping define truthfully who we are as American people. Lesbians and gay men, bisexuals and transgender Americans deserve to be counted,

It’s time to mail our form back today.

Three things you can do for ENDA today

Congressional leaders said the time to take up the Employment Non-Discrimination Act would be after health care reform passed. Lambda Legal wants the House Representatives to take up ENDA as soon as they return from recess on April 12 and they've come up with a list of three quick and easy things you can do to help.

Check 'em out after the jump.

1. CALL the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Give the operator your zip code and ask to be connected to your Representative.

Suggested voicemail message: My name is _______ , and I live at (your street address) in (your city). I am calling about ENDA. My message is simple and direct: we need a House vote on ENDA as soon as possible. Thank you.

2. WRITE your representative (handwritten is best) or send an email.

Suggested email or letter:

In too many states, there are no specific protections to keep employers from firing people because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT).

Federal law is inadequate; and the current patchwork of state and local laws is not enough.

LGBT people need to work to live and support their families, just like everyone else. They deserve to be judged on their work performance, and not face discrimination based on who they are.

ENDA can help fix these problems by making it illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Please help by ending the delays and bringing the bill to a vote in the House as soon as possible. This legislation is vital, and is a top priority for me and my family.

3. Visit House members in their district offices.

Get an appointment, drop by their office, and definitely leave a note.

A conversation with Dylan Vox

A Conversation with Dylan Vox
by Drew Wilson

Dylan Vox has been an ice skater, a law school student, a stripper, an award-winning pornstar, and now, a successful (and very busy) mainstream TV and movie actor.

I had a chance to catch up with Dylan recently to discuss his time living in Denver, his upcoming movies, and the time we ate birthday cake out of each other's underwear.

It was a lot classier than it sounds.

Dylan Vox before/after a nap.
Drew: Hey buddy, you sound tired.
Dylan: I am tired. I just finished filming a new movie and it was lots of long days and lots of prosthetics. I need a nap.

Do you want to take a nap and I can call you back later?
No, a nap wouldn't be the same without  you in bed with me.

Oh, you. So tell me about the new movie. It's called 'Brides of Sodom'. It's directed by Creep Creepersin and he's brilliant. He does a lot of B-type horror movies and it's been great. He's a cult favorite and kind of a big deal. I play the vampire king, shockingly.

You're like the go-to guy for vampire kings, aren't you?
Yeah, I don't know how that happened but I like it.
Vampire King Dylan.

Sweet. The last movie I knew about you being in was 'Homewrecker'.
Completely different from 'Brides of Sodom'.

Well, it must be nice to be able to play a variety of roles. Or are you a vampire king in 'Homewrecker'?
'Homewrecker' was a very different kind of movie. So much fun. It's just dumb, campy fun.

Pop it in the DVD player. Have some drinks. Sit back and enjoy the camp.
Yeah, it's campy but it's campy on purpose.

I enjoyed 'Homewrecker'. We all love you and that girl from the 'Eating Out' movies.
Yeah, Rebekah (Kochran) is great. A blast. We had so much fun. We both have the same kind of ridiculous sense of humor. You gotta have fun and we had a great time.

Dylan in his pornstar days as Brad Benton.
Does this string of mainstream acting roles complete the transformation for you from porn prodigy Brad Benton to 'real' actor Dylan Vox?
It's been a pretty interesting process. I was actually  interviewed recently for MSNBC along with Sasha Grey as examples of two people who have made the jump from porn to mainstream. Sasha recently did a movie for Steven Soderbergh and it was kind of a big deal since she's done porn.

Yeah, she's been in maybe one or two.
Right? So MSNBC was looking for a boy who had crossed over as well and they said "you're pretty much it." Actually though, it's kind of like Kelly Clarkson having to talk about 'American Idol' all the time. It was awesome and I'm glad I did it because I probably wouldn't be able to do what I'm doing now if I hadn't done it but the whole topic is just kind of boring to me. It's just not that interesting, you know? There's not that much to talk about. People freak out about adult movies but it's kind of really not that different from anything else. You just show up, do your job, and then leave.

Now, you're a former Denverite
Yeah, I was skating and going to school. I got an MBA at the University of Denver and moved to Hollywood right after colleg.

Very well rounded.
Wow, you're well rounded if nothing else.
Yeah, broke but well rounded. I tend to pick really expensive things to do. So I moved to Denver and bought a house and everything but I just don't feel like I ever really connected with Denver at all. It's very whitebread and I'm from inner city Atlanta. It was just the attitude, I guess, and I just didn't get it.

I always thought of Denver being like 'Dynasty' and I thought all these rich people would be all over the place but it was more like 'About Schmidt' with, like, Kathy Bates.

There's, like, super-rich people and super-poor people and there's not really a middle class and it was just freaky to me. I found it to be kind of judgmental. Out here nobody gives a shit about anything but there ... maybe it was just me but I always thought it was kind of strange.

So you hated it here?
I wouldn't say that. It was just a very midwest city to me. Maybe not as much as, like, Iowa or someplace but it just wasn't for me. I mean, I can say that it was beautiful and I met a lot of really cool people there. At least I met you out there.

Yes, we ate birthday cake out of each other's underwear the day we met.
Yes! I danced at your birthday party. That was so hot. But kind of weird. That was my "please God, I need a job, job."

A man's gotta pay the bills! So you're enjoying the west coast?
I love it. It's awesome. The people crack me up and everybody's mellow. And out here if you have a good work ethic, which I do, you can go a long way. In the industry, or any job, if you prove that you're willing to go the extra mile people want to work with you and I really appreciate that. There are so many slackers out here and I'm used to working really hard.

Cream rises, baby. So what's next for you professionally?
'Homewrecker' comes out in March which is awesome and I love that movie. When I first moved here it was the first thing I ever did out here was a play based on that movie. It was a hugely successful run for LA Theater and they were gonna make a movie out of it and they called me three years later and they were really doing it. They were so cool and it's so cool to be working with those kinds of people.

Yikes!
My only argument with this movie is what they did to you on the box cover.  I've seen you up close and personal and you're a good looking boy. WTF?
Ha, I don't know what is up with that. I was like what the hell? I was supposed to look crazy but that's not really crazy.

That is not my Dylan Vox.
Yeah, you can only do so much and then it's out of your hands. But I hate it and, just for the record, I do not look like that!

But you do have a bunch of other projects in the works.
Yeah, I have several other movies coming out. One, called 'Megaconda', will be coming out on the SyFy channel.

Nuh-uh!
Yuh-huh!

Dude!
I know. It stars myself and Stella Stevens and Greg Evigan.
Sybill Danning is awesome.

I love me some SyFy channel.
Me too! It was a blast. Stellas' great and Greg is awesome. We had a great time and there's lots of cheesy graphics and effects. We spent days running away from a snake we couldn't see.

Nothing wrong with a low budget SyFy movie.
Personally, I love them. And then a movie I'm super excited about is 'H1N1 - Virus X'. It's pretty cool and Sybill Danning is in it and she's like my best friend now.

The Sybill Danning? Dude!
Shut up and kiss me, indeed.
I'm not really one to get starstruck but when I first moved down here I was driving down in LA and Sybill Danning was filming something. I was like "I have to get her autograph" so I asked her for it and she wrote 'To Dylan Vox, hope to work with you someday, Sybill Danning' and five yeras later I was working on 'The Lair' and reading the boards and Sybill Danning's name was on there and she was joining the cast. So we did that together and 'H1N1'and so many other things she's like my BFF. She's so cool, so professional, and so fun ot work with. It's just surreal and crazy.

Sybill Danning is legendary.
Absolutely! And I also just finished a movie called 'Shut Up and Kiss Me', a little gay comedy that should be pretty good.

I think we've been needing a cute little gay comedy.
Well I play an ex heroin addict so it's not that cute. I never get the boy next door. I always get the heroin addict or vampire king.

It's your ouvre.
Everybody loves bad guys.

Everybody loves Dylan Vox. And I know you're busy so I'm gonna let you go now but it's been great catching up with you and  congratulations on all the career momentum, you big stud you.

HRC calls new Don't Ask, Don't Tell regulations a 'positive step'

HRC today called the Department of Defense’s new “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” regulations “a positive step on the road to repeal this year." The new regulations released by Defense Secretary Robert Gates will raise the bar for investigations and discharges under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.

"These new regulationsare a positive step toward repeal of the discriminatory 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' law this year,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese (left). "Congress must continue to move forward with legislative action to repeal the law this year while the Pentagon continues its work to determine how to best implement that repeal. Two branches of government can and should work concurrently toward repeal. There is no reason for Congress to wait for the details on implementation when Secretary Gates and the President have made it clear that this law should be repealed."

The new regulations will raise the level of the commander authorized to initiate a discharge investigation, revise the threshold for credible information and third-party allegations, and protect disclosure to medical and psychological personnel and for other non-military purposes.

"Our community is doing the hard work of lobbying members of Congress and making sure the grassroots pressure is on for repeal," continued Solmonese. "With health insurance reform passed and a successful conclusion reached, now is the time for more visible and aggressive leadership from the White House to push for a vote this year."

Military leaders, including Secretary Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen, recognize that DADT is a failed law and support its repeal. Before the Senate Armed Services Committee last month, Secretary Gates announced, “the question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we best prepare for it.” In addition at that hearing, Adm. Mullen testified that “allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do."

Direct action and the gay rights movement

Last week's high-profile direct-action protests to call attention to the federal marriage ban and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy staged by new LGBT group GetEQUAL showed the power of such actions, if they are tied to a "coherent" political strategy that includes the major LGBT groups and online tools, according to grass-roots organizer and strategist Michael Crawford.

"There's a lot of LGBT generated political heat right now," Crawford says. "Let's work to ensure that it leads to the fires of real change. The LGBT community needs and demands it."
