Dont' Ask, Don't Tell done in September?
The Senate is likely to take up the issue of whether to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in September, as part of the debate over the defense-authorization measure for next year, according to Sen. Carl Levin (pictured), D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
But the Senate leadership must still agree on the timing of the consideration of the defense bill.
Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, says "repeal proponents will prevail" in a close vote.

NOM Summer for Marriage bus tour a "sham" says HRC
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today challenged the National Organization for Marriage's "Summer for Marriage" bus tour, saying it's nothing more than legal and rhetorical posturing in its campaign to keep its donor base secret.
“The bus tour is a total sham, plain and simple,” said Fred Sainz, HRC’s vice president of communications. “NOM’s highly-touted bus tour is less about so-called ‘traditional marriage’ and more about creating an elaborate and cynical stunt. NOM rolled out a summer of nationwide events in order to draw lawful protesters, all so that NOM and its allies can pepper ongoing lawsuits challenging public disclosure laws with made-up stories of harassment. This unprecedented victimization crusade is the lowest denominator of political activism, and it won’t fly.”
NOM issued a press release last Friday saying that LGBT supporters have “approached and threatened children,” engaged in “bullying tactics” and committed acts of harassment. However, according to HRC, NOM’s uncorroborated claims belie legitimate local media reports demonstrating that pro-equality supporters, which have vastly outnumbered NOM’s faithful, have been civil. NOM has yet to document any illegal activity or actual harassment, despite the presence of law enforcement at all the events.
Sainz concludes: “The bread crumbs of their deceit are clear. Let’s add it all up: NOM and its allies are making a last-ditch legal stand in Washington and Maine that they should be specially entitled to hide their political activities, and they’re saying that harassment and intimidation should provide them this cover. At the same time, Brian Brown schedules a series of virtually unattended weekday afternoon events hoping for counter-protests that they can then use as evidence of harassment and intimidation. Why else would NOM execute such half-hearted non-events and then completely subjugate its so-called ‘pro-marriage’ message in favor of devoting its energies almost exclusively to condemning lawful protesters?”

Teddy Bear designers needed for Bear to Make a Difference
The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Judy and Dennis Shepard in memory of their 21-year old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998. Created to honor Matthew in a manner that was appropriate to his dreams, beliefs and aspirations, the Foundation seeks to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance” through its varied educational programs and by continuing to tell Matthew’s story. In February of 2002, a dedicated group of volunteers put together an idea for a silent auction of teddy bears that would benefit the Foundation. Many local Denver notables designed and dressed teddy bears and held a silent auction that raised just over $5,000 for the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Eight years later, "Bear to Make a Difference" has become the largest annual fundraising event for the organization and has developed a national reputation, featuring celebrity teddy bears from all avenues of entertainment. Last year’s gala raised over $100,000 to support the work of the Foundation. This year’s "Bear to Make a Difference" gala and teddy-bear auction will be held on October 16, 2010.
The Foundation is looking for a few designers who are interested in creating a teddy bear for the event. Every year celebrities agree to sign bears designed in their image to be auctioned off to support the work of the Foundation. Last year’s participants included Celine Dion, Katie Perry, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand and Nicole Kidman. The Foundation will provide the teddy bear and you dress it up. Bears need to be completed by mid-August 2010.

Supreme Court cases a gamble for gay marriage?
If recent marriage-equality court decisions are challenged all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, there's a good chance the court, in its current incarnation, will not be inclined to deliver a ruling that favors marriage equality, some activists say.

NLGJA Announces Speakers for its 7th Annual LGBT Media Summit
Today the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) announces panelists for its 7th Annual LGBT Media Summit, sponsored by the Bob Ross Foundation and the Bay Area Reporter. The LGBT Media Summit, being held September 2, 2010 in San Francisco, CA, kicks off NLGJA's 20th annual national convention focused on journalism and the media.
Moderated by this year's LGBT Media Summit Chair, Matthew S. Bajko, the morning plenary will focus on the state of LGBT Media. Panelists include the publisher of Curve Magazine, Francis Stevens; editor in chief of the Washington Blade, Kevin Naff; the publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News, Mark Segal; and the Bay Area Reporter's general manager, Michael Yamashita.
"I wanted to hear from editors and publishers how they were able to revive their papers and/or survive the economic downturn and share best practices that might benefit other papers. Who better to diagnose the state of LGBT media than the people working day and night to ensure the industry remains vibrant and part of the media landscape," said Bajko, an NLGJA national board member and an assistant editor at the Bay Area Reporter.

Naked Highway - In & Out
Fueled with the enough pheronome-filled beats that would make Prince blush, the new single 'In & Out' from Naked Highway's new album 'Most Hottest' is a funk-filled, homoerotic romp, not coy about its lyrics or its intentions.
"Musically, it was inspired by 80's freestyle," says Naked Highway mastermind Sy Boccari. "Lyrically, I imagined myself as a modern-day George Clinton or Rick James trying to make a woman spread. I think those guys would very explicitly say, 'I wanna work you in and out' and not be all coy about it at all."

Drag Queen Loses Job, Jumps 32 Stories from Denver Downtown Building
Denver comedy drag queen, Nuclia Waste (pictured), after losing her graphic design job of 13 years, will jump off a 32 story building in downtown Denver. This may seem a little extreme but it's all in the name of charity. Nuclia was been asked to be one of the celebrity rapellers raising money for the Cancer League of Colorado at their "Over The Edge" fund raising event at Lincoln One Place.
"I am deathly afraid of heights and can’t believe I agreed to do this. Some people lose their job and become depressed. Instead, I've decided to jump off a building and raise money for the Cancer League of Colorado," stated Nuclia Waste. "It's better than standing on a corner with a sign that says, 'Will Drag For Food'."
The event will take place in the middle of rush hour on Friday, August 27 at 5 p.m. at the One Lincoln Park luxury high-rise in downtown Denver located at 2001 Lincoln St.
Nuclia is hoping to raise $3,000 through sponsorships for the big jump. Anyone interested in sponsoring her can make an online donation at overtheedge.blacktie-athon.com.

Check out James Franco in the trailer for 'Howl'
Starring James Franco in a career-defining performance as Allen Ginsberg, HOWL is the story of how the young poet’s seminal work broke down societal barriers in the face of an infamous public obscenity trial. In his famously confessional style, Ginsberg – poet, counter-culture icon, and chronicler of the Beat Generation – recounts the road trips, love affairs, and search for personal liberation that led to HOWL, the most timeless work of his career. HOWL interweaves three stories: the unfolding of the landmark 1957 obscenity trial; an imaginative animated ride through the prophetic masterpiece; and a unique portrait of a man who found new ways to express himself, and in doing so, changed his own life and galvanized a generation.

D.C. ruling a victory for gay marriage
The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, applauded a D.C. Court of Appeals ruling today that rejected a proposed initiative on the D.C. marriage equality law. In March 2010, D.C. became the sixth jurisdiction in the nation to permit same-sex couples to marry. While Bishop Harry Jackson, a pastor in Maryland, has been the public face of this litigation, the truth is that outside groups like the National Organization for Marriage and the Alliance Defense Fund are the driving force behind these anti-equality measures.
“The court’s ruling today is a significant victory for justice, the rule of law and the protection of all D.C. residents against discrimination,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese (pictured). “It’s time for the National Organization for Marriage to realize equality is here to stay no matter how much money they want to throw at turning back the clock.”
In its decision, the Court of Appeals, D.C.’s highest court, decided 5-4 that the Council properly exercised its authority under the D.C. Charter in establishing the requirement that a proposed initiative may not authorize, or have the effect of authorizing, discrimination prohibited by the D.C. Human Rights Act. The Court ruled unanimously that the proposed initiative would in fact impermissibly permit discrimination against gays and lesbians in the District.
“The D.C. Council made a wise decision decades ago that no initiative should be permitted to strip away any individual’s civil rights. The Court unanimously found that the proposed anti-marriage initiative would have the effect of causing discrimination, and in doing so, stood up for the entire D.C. community,” said Solmonese.
On December 15, 2009, the D.C. Council overwhelmingly passed the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Act of 2009. The bill was signed by Mayor Adrian Fenty, transmitted to Congress for review and became law on March 3, 2010. The first marriages between same-sex couples were performed on March 9, 2010. The marriage equality law ensures that clergy and religious organizations are not required to provide services, accommodations, facilities or goods for the solemnization of a same-sex marriage.
“D.C.’s elected officials and courts have spoken, yet NOM may very well grasp at straws by appealing the case to the U.S. Supreme Court in a desperate attempt to further their misguided efforts,” said Solmonese.
The Board of Elections & Ethics has repeatedly rejected proposed initiatives and referenda that would invalidate legislation passed by the Council and signed by the mayor recognizing same-sex marriages. D.C.’s lower courts uniformly rejected opponents’ claims that they were being denied a right to vote and upheld D.C.’s strong anti-discrimination protections.

Award-winning filmmaker Bob Ray hits Denver's Starz FilmCenter on Saturday, July 17 as part of a DIY film tour to promote the world premier of his new film 'Total Badass', as well as 'Hell On Wheels', his critically acclaimed documentary on the resurgence of roller derby.
Grassroots through-and-through, this tour joins forces with local derby leagues - in this case the Rocky Mountain Rolelrgirls - and film groups to serve up a slice of the Austin magic to theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Presented by roller derby leagues, many of the 'Hell on Wheels' screenings will feature post-screening discussions with reps from local leagues, as well as Ray himself, to further explore the birth of modern derby and examine the connections within the larger community.

DOMA in Obama's hands
Following a federal judge's ruling that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional, there has been much speculation about whether the Obama administration will appeal the ruling.
One former Justice Department official says that unless the Obama administration challenges the decision, it could set a precedent other administrations could someday use to ignore pro-LGBT federal laws.
"You could have a conservative Department of Justice that ... won't enforce all kinds of new protections for gays and lesbians because the attorney general doesn't agree with them. That's not a regime you want to live in," the former official notes.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" troop survey is biased, groups say. "Nonsense," Pentagon says.
A survey of hundreds of thousands of active-duty and reserve troops about their opinions regarding serving alongside gay and lesbian colleagues contains "derogatory" wording that incites homophobia and will bias the results, according to military-ban-repeal groups.

HRC praises National HIV/AIDS Strategy
The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – yesterday praised the release of the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States as a positive step forward in the fight against HIV and AIDS nationwide, but called on the administration and Congress to provide the leadership and resources necessary to implement this important plan. The ambitious plan aims to reduce new infections – setting a benchmark of a 25% decrease by 2015 – as well as increase access to care, reduce HIV-related health disparities, and better coordinate the national response to the epidemic. Importantly, the Strategy notes that the resources needed to fight HIV and AIDS have not historically been directed to communities most in need – including gay and bisexual men, as well as transgender people – and that the number of new infections nationwide cannot be reduced without a focus on the epidemic in the LGBT community.
“President Obama has put forward a bold and historic framework for addressing HIV and AIDS in the United States. The Strategy importantly acknowledges the continued impact HIV/AIDS has on LGBT people, as well as the failure to put adequate attention and resources toward addressing the epidemic in our community. But the goals and timetables laid out in this document cannot and will not be achieved without strong leadership and robust resources,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “All of us – including the administration and Congress, state governments, service providers and advocates – must commit to ensuring that the bold vision of this plan is fulfilled, and ‘[t]he United States will become a place where new HIV infections are rare and when they do occur, every person, regardless of age, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or socio-economic circumstance, will have unfettered access to high quality, life-extending care, free from stigma and discrimination.’”

GLAAD's list of gay Emmy nominees
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, recently congratulated the openly LGBT actors as well as the creative teams of several LGBT-inclusive television programs that received nominations for the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
“Today’s nominees reflect a diverse range of openly gay and bisexual actors, characters and plot lines, all of which help Americans better understand and accept our community,” said Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). “By nominating eight openly gay, lesbian or bisexual actors for television’s highest honor, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has sent a clear message that LGBT actors are limitless in the roles that they play and offer a rich variety of talent that deserves recognition.”
Openly LGBT actors nominated (alphabetically):
* Chris Colfer as Kurt Hummel (Glee) (pictured above left)
* Alan Cumming as Eli Gold (The Good Wife)
* Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother) and as Bryan Ryan (Glee)
* Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett (Modern Family)
* Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester (Glee) and as Dr. Linda Freeman (Two and a Half Men)
* Ian McKellen as Two (The Prisoner)

The 62 Annual Primetime Emmy Awards air live Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 8PM EST/5PM PST on NBC.

Eric Stonestreet was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Cameron, Mitchell’s partner, on Modern Family and Will Arnett was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as the openly gay Devin Banks on 30 Rock.
Glee was the most nominated comedy series this year with 19 nominations, while Mad Men led all drama series with 17 nominations. Among Glee nominations were nods for openly gay director Paris Barclay, who directed the episode in which Kurt comes out to his father, as well as for the show’s openly gay creator Ryan Murphy, who wrote and directed the pilot.
Several of the nominees in the Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series categories, including Glee, Modern Family, Mad Men, and True Blood were also nominees earlier this year at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The GLAAD Media Awards, a benchmark for the media industry, recognize and honor media for outstanding images of the LGBT community and complement GLAAD’s work to bring LGBT images and stories to Americans. The LGBT-inclusive comedy series Nurse Jackie, The Office and 30 Rock were also GLAAD nominees.
Also of note, comedian Wanda Sykes was nominated for her HBO comedy special, Wanda Sykes: I’ma Be Me, which touched upon her experiences as a recently married lesbian woman raising a family. Sykes recently received the coveted Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco. In 2001, GLAAD also honored Glee director Paris Barclay with that same prize.

Here comes the (gay) judge?
The U.K. is still feeling the impact of a policy that until 1991 allowed only married persons to be appointed as judges. LGBT legal professionals still shy away from seeking seats on the bench, according to a study by Interlaw, a network of out lawyers.
"The chilling effect of this exclusion is likely to have shaped the careers and career expectations of the most senior legal professionals who have the skills and characteristics that would otherwise make them suitable candidates," said law professor Leslie Moran at a recent lecture.

Ugandan activist to talk gay rights in the United States
One of Uganda’s most outspoken and prominent human rights activists, Ms. Valentine (Val) Kalende, is visiting the United States under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program to focus on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) advocacy. Ms. Kalende will have discussions with members of government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, faith groups, and the media, as well as with local and federal government officials. In turn, she will talk with U.S. interlocutors and broader audiences about the Ugandan human rights situation and challenges faced by members of the LGBT community.
As a human rights-LGBT rights advocate and Programs and Communications Manager of Freedom and Roam Uganda, Ms. Kalende has been deeply involved in opposition to a proposed “anti-homosexuality” law introduced in 2009 in the Ugandan parliament. The controversial law would sentence some LGBT people to life in prison or even death. A former journalist, Ms. Kalende has written a full accounting of the anti-homosexuality movement in her country. She has also raised awareness of how this legislation would impact all of Ugandan society. Ms. Kalende has been harassed, beaten, and arrested because of her advocacy work. She has been featured by U.S. and international news organizations as one of the most courageous human rights activists in Uganda.
Ms. Kalende’s program includes visits in Salt Lake City, Utah (July 7-10) and Louisville, Kentucky (July 10-13) before concluding in Washington, D.C. (June 13 – 15). This exchange experience is designed to provide her with an in-depth understanding of U.S. government systems and political organization at all levels; civil rights protections and equal opportunity laws in the United States; advocacy strategies adopted by organizations to influence policy and effect positive change; organizing strategies across sectors, from building a movement to peaceful protests; challenges and work of the American LGBT movement; faith communities and LGBT issues; media coverage of human rights issues and use of media to advance organization’s message; and, the work of international human rights organizations focused on Uganda and gender issues.
