Send a Letter Supporting the Harvey Milk Stamp

The Victory Fund writes:

"On Harvey Milk Day, May 22, we not only commemorated a leader's birthday, we celebrated his immense impact on the fight for LGBT equality, and re-dedicated ourselves to the things Harvey stood for: honesty about ourselves always; service to others; and an unwavering commitment to speaking truth to power.

Just the fifth openly gay person to win elective office anywhere in the U.S., Harvey understood his community would never gain its legal equality until it also gained real political power. So he dedicated himself to public service, and paid the ultimate price for it.

The Victory Fund is urging our friends to support a growing effort to memorialize his place in history through an official Harvey Milk stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service.

The Harvey Milk National Stamp Campaign is a joint project of the International Court System, the Harvey Milk Foundation and numerous national LGBT groups, including the Victory Fund.

Use our sample text or write your own letter to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, and we'll make sure the committee receives it right away."

Praise for New Federal Guidance on Protecting Transgender Federal Workers

The Human Rights Campaign on Friday praised the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for publishing guidance regarding transgender federal employees.  Pursuant to a June 2009 presidential memorandum regarding federal employees, OPM added gender identity to the categories protected under the equal employment opportunity policy for Executive Branch positions.

The guidance is available at www.opm.gov/diversity/Transgender/Guidance.asp, provides further information to federal managers and human resources officials to ensure that transgender employees are treated fairly and equally in their public service to our nation.

"It is an essential American value that workers be judged on their merits, not personal characteristics like gender identity that have no bearing on how well you can do the job," said HRC President Joe Solmonese.  "Today's guidance will help to ensure that all federal workers – whether fighting fires in our national forests, prosecuting federal crimes in court, conducting groundbreaking cancer research or making sure this week's paycheck gets to your mailbox – will be treated with the fairness and dignity they deserve.  We thank President Obama and OPM Director John Berry for their leadership in providing a federal workforce that welcomes all who would enter public service, including transgender people."

As part of its Blueprint for Positive Change, a series of policy recommendations to improve the lives of LGBT Americans and their families, HRC urged the Obama administration to extend protections to transgender federal workers.

The transgender community often faces increased hurdles during a job search. Although Colorado has an inclusive employment non-discrimination act in place that protects transgender employees and jobseekers, discrimination due to lack of knowledge and understanding can still occur. Therefore, it is imperative that both transgender job applicants and prospective employers have the information they need for a successful employment situation.

On May 7, 2011, The GLBT Community Center of Colorado's (The Center)  Transgender Career Advancement Project (TCAP) made history by presenting the first-ever Colorado Transgender Job Fair. The job fair's purpose was to assist members of Colorado's transgender community in finding well-paying jobs with employers who have transgender-inclusive policies in place and can provide a living wage, benefits, and opportunities for advancement.

U.S Dept of State releases stament about violent gay rights march in Russia

The U.S. Department of State released the following statement by Mark Toner, Deputy Spokesperson, on Sunday, May 29 about Saturday's violent GLBT rights march in Russia that resulted in American gay rights activist Lt. Dan Choi, and nearly 20 others, being beaten and arrested:

"We note with concern that in Moscow on Saturday, May 28, a peaceable demonstration of Russians advocating for the rights of gays and lesbians, joined by international supporters, was forcefully disrupted by counter-protesters, and that Russian security forces then detained people from both groups, including American citizens. Some protestors were seriously injured according to media reports.

Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right all members of the OSCE committed to, including in the Moscow declaration and as recently as the Astana summit. As nationwide legislative elections approach, constraints on the ability of Russian citizens peacefully to gather and express their views will be closely watched in evaluating the integrity of the electoral process.  We call on Russian authorities to work with municipal officials to find better ways to safeguard these fundamental freedoms."

Choi was in Denver last month to speak at a Queer Symposium at Metropolitan State College of Denver.

House passes defense bill with anti-gay language

A defense budget bill containing anti-gay amendments, including one that could complicate the implementation of the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," passed overwhelmingly in the U.S. House last week. Another provision would prohibit military facilities from hosting marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples. Conservative and religious activists say they'll sue unless the Senate version also includes a ban on Defense Department personnel participating in such ceremonies.

Upset winner in Congressional election supports marriage equality

Kathy Hochul, a Democrat who supports marriage equality for gays and lesbians, was victorious in a special election to represent New York's 26th congressional district.

"I do support the civil institution of marriage for gay couples, with absolutely no requirements placed on religious institutions," Hochul told a local paper during the campaign.

HUD OFFERS $9.1 MILLION TO HIV/AIDS HOUSING PROGRAMS

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced this week that it is offering up to $9.1 million to address the critical housing needs of low-income persons and families living with HIV/AIDS including homeless individuals and families. HUD’s funding notice is offered through the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program.

“These grants will allow States and local communities to forge new partnerships and develop strategies to meet the housing needs of low-income and homeless persons living with HIV/AIDs,” said Mercedes Márquez, HUD’s Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development. “By offering our local partners these funds, we are giving them the necessary tools to provide real hope for those who might otherwise end up on the streets without the care they need.”

HUD is making grants available new community partnerships to develop an Integrated HIV/AIDS Housing Plan (IHHP). The IHHP is a collaborative process that will seek to improve the delivery of housing and services to low-income individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. Applications must be submitted by August 2, 2011.

HOPWA grants support the Obama Administration’s National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) and the Opening Doors: The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness. Together these initiatives address goals to: prevent and end homelessness; increase the supply of affordable housing; and increase the coordination of mainstream housing resources and other health and human services.

HUD requires prospective grantees to submit their applications online through Grants.gov. Any changes to HUD-published funding notices will be made available to the public through a Federal Register public and published on Grants.gov. Applicants are urged to sign up for Grants.gov’s notifications service to receive periodic updates or changes to this grant offering.

Commends Nevada Governor for Signing into Law Transgender Employment Protectio

The Human Rights Campaign yesterday commended Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval for signing AB 211 into law. The bill codifies prohibitions against discrimination in employment on the basis of gender identity or expression.

“Thank you Governor Sandoval for standing up for all Nevadans,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “Going forward, employment decisions in Nevada must be made on the basis of merit not an employee’s gender identity or expression. This is a tremendous victory for our entire community.”

Additionally, the Nevada legislature has passed SB 331 and 368, bills that expand the state’s anti-discrimination laws in the areas of public accommodations and housing, respectively.   SB 331 protects against discrimination in public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, while SB 368 adds gender identity to Nevada’s housing anti-discrimination law.  These bills we transmitted to the Governor’s office today and are now awaiting his consideration.

The Human Rights Campaign has worked to build both public and legislative support for this legislation, mobilizing Nevadans and sending staff to educate Nevada lawmakers and businesses on transgender issues.  Through these efforts, thousands of phone calls, emails and handwritten letters have been sent to legislators urging them to approve this legislation.

Nevada is now the 14th U.S. state, along with the District of Columbia, to provide protections based on gender identity or expression. For maps of nondiscrimination laws in the states, check out www.HRC.org/State_Laws.

Focus on the Family admits they are losing the fight against gay marriage

Focus on the Family President Jim Daly has told an interviewer that social conservatives have "probably lost" the fight against marriage equality for same-sex couples. "We're losing on that one, especially among the 20- and 30-somethings: 65 to 70 percent of them favor same-sex marriage. I don't know if that's going to change with a little more age -- demographers would say probably not," said Daly, speaking to World Magazine's Marvin Olasky.

Speakers will inspire more than 300 religious leaders from 50 states and 25 faith traditions before they lobby members of Congress to support legislation to protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from employment discrimination, and student bullying and harassment.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Statement About International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

The following is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's statement on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia:

"In every part of the world, men and women are persecuted and attacked because of who they are or whom they love. Homophobia, transphobia and the brutal hostility associated with them are often rooted in a lack of understanding of what it actually means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). So to combat this terrible scourge and break the cycle of fear and violence, we must work together to improve education and support those who stand up against laws that criminalize love and promote hate.  As we mark the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia this May 17, let us resolve to redouble our efforts.

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am proud to reaffirm our support for LGBT communities at home and abroad, and to call for an end to discrimination and mistreatment of LGBT persons wherever it occurs.  Whether by supporting LGBT advocates marching in Belgrade, leading the effort at the United Nations to affirm the human rights of LGBT persons, or condemning a vile law under consideration in Uganda, we are committed to our friends and allies in every region of the world who are fighting for equality and justice.  These are not Western concepts; these are universal human rights.

Despite these gains and hard work, there is more to do to turn the tide of inequality and discrimination against the LGBT community.  If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, know that the United States stands with you and we are unwavering in our commitment to ending this cycle of hate."

HIV Plus Presents Annie Lennox

Few musicians will ever experience the international renown that Scottish recording artist Annie Lennox has enjoyed. In total, as one half of the Eurythmics and as a solo artist, she’s sold over 80 million albums. Now 56, the Oscar winner, United Nations AIDS ambassador, and officer of the Order of the British Empire has turned her attention to full-time activism, campaigning on behalf of women and children around the world affected by HIV/AIDS.

In the May/June issue of HIVPlus magazine, Lennox talks about why she started SING after meeting Nelson Mandela, how she learned about the dire conditions of women and children, and how she keeps her spirits high in the face of a seemingly overwhelming problem.

“The thing that was more significant than meeting [Mandela] was his press conference at Robben Island,” Lennox says. “He was talking about the HIV/AIDS pandemic and especially how it affected women and girls, and it struck me that he used the word ‘genocide.’ I had not heard that term being used in connection with the AIDS pandemic, and it struck me. To hear it emanating from Mandela, it was a hugely significant statement and yet one I hadn’t read about it in the front pages of newspapers, as one would think something so serious and significant should have.”

Erland and the Carnival - Springtime

Erland & The Carnival’s Nightingale was released in the US on March 29th, but the UK band is far from done revealing new (and in this case, 6-legged) nuggets for your enjoyment. Premiered yesterday on VEVO, the band is pleased to disconcert you with the video for their song “Springtime.” Much like the terrifying conclusion of the film Creepshow, we find our hero, Erland Cooper, buried and overcome by roaches. The sunny concept of springtime is countered with a dank, dark, and infested hole, reminding us that, as spring signals the flourishing of things we desire, it also means the permeation of other, more sinister, rebirths.

Cyndi Lauper Applauds Introduction of Legislation by Senator Kerry to Help Homeless LGBT Youth

Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) last week introduced The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act, a bill that aims to reduce youth homeless. The legislation includes an important provision that provides support for programs that improve family relationships and reduce homelessness among youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
“I applaud Senator Kerry for introducing such a crucial piece of legislation and for ensuring that the needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth are included in the bill,” said Cyndi Lauper, True Colors Fund co-founder. “As a mother, I am deeply saddened and angered by the epidemic of young people who are being thrown out of there homes by their parents or runaway out of fear and despair simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. As parents we need to be there for our children when they are struggling to come to terms with who they are, if passed this bill will provide much needed support for families to do just that.”
It is currently estimated that 20% to 40% of all homeless youth identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, yet make up 3% to 5% of the general youth population. Helping to foster accepting environments at home is a vital piece of the puzzle in helping to bring an end to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth experiencing homelessness.
The True Colors Fund was co-founded by Cyndi Lauper to inspire and engage everyone, especially straight people, to become active participants in the advancement of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality and to raise awareness about and bring an end to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth homelessness.

Free music download: Nite Jewel - It Goes Through My Head

The music of Ramona Gonzalez (better known as Nite Jewel) brings to mind the days of Teen Steam - a restless, infectious R&B beat, a voice you can sing along to, a positive outlook that sympathizes with your troubles and helps you to dance them away. A melody like the one found on "It Goes Through Your Head" bridges a pop sensibility beginning with Cyndi Lauper, continuing on through '80s pop R&B like Expose and The Jets, and ending with Ms. Gonzalez's winning charm and tremendous voice.  The remix by DaM-Funk only reinforces the inherent danceability in the tune.

House panel votes to raise the bar for military ban repeal

The House Armed Services Committee has voted to complicate efforts to end the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, adding language to a defense bill Wednesday night that would require all four service chiefs to certify their branches of the military are ready to accept gay troops. Current law requires certification by the president, secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Two other amendments in opposition to marriage equality were also approved.

Gay Civil Rights History on Display at Library of Congress

Two original documents of major historical significance to the movement for lesbian and gay civil equality in the United States are now on public display in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Gay civil rights pioneer Frank Kameny’s Petition to the U.S. Supreme Court (1961), and a letter to The Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C. (1966) from U.S. Civil Service Chairman John W. Macy, Jr., have been added to the Library’s popular exhibition on the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, “Creating the United States.” “Creating the United States” has been seen by more than 1.5 million people since it was first opened in 2008, and according to the Library, the exhibition “demonstrates that the Declaration, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are living instruments that are central to the evolution of the United States.”
The two artifacts were donated to the Library of Congress in 2006 on behalf of the Kameny Papers Project (www.kamenypapers.org).
“The history of gay and lesbian Americans, for the first time, is included by the Library of Congress in the story of the Constitution and its evolution as a living instrument of freedom,” said Charles Francis, a founder of the Kameny Papers Project.  Bob Witeck, a co-founder of Kameny Papers Project, said, ”Telling America’s story and creating a more perfect union are impossible without sharing these testaments to our nation’s gay civil rights story." The two documents on gay and lesbian history are displayed accompanying the first rendition of the Constitution for blind readers; a suffragist’s scrapbook with material about Susan B. Anthony; and a drawing of African-Americans registering to vote on the steps of the Selma, Alabama courthouse.
The Library of Congress exhibition states, “Frank Kameny, a founder of the American gay rights movement, was the first person to file a petition to the Supreme Court for a violation of his civil rights based on sexual orientation after being fired by the Army Map Service in 1957. Although Kameny argued that the government’s actions toward gays were an “affront to human dignity,” his petition was denied by the Supreme Court.”
The Library’s curator describes the 1966 letter from federal official John W. Macy, Jr. to The Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C.:  “In the letter, Macy justified the Civil Service’s discrimination by citing ‘the revulsion of other employees by homosexual conduct’. In January, 2010, this letter was introduced into evidence in Perry v Schwarzenegger, an action to overturn the California referendum on same-sex marriages,” the Library of Congress also explains.
John W. Macy, Jr. was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to head the Sixties-era predecessor of the Office of Personnel Management, and then known as the U.S. Civil Service Commission.  Macy reported directly to President Johnson, though often through Johnson’s Special Assistant Bill Moyers.  Macy’s so-called “revulsion” letter to the Mattachine Society (Washington, D.C.’s first gay civil rights organization formed by Frank Kameny) is “steeped in a special animus toward gays and lesbians as a class, while denying they are one,” writes Charles Francis in an article published by “The Gay & Lesbian Review” (January, 2011). “For years, this letter, carefully crafted by Macy and his Commission Counsel Lou Pellerzi, was the “landmark policy statement on homosexuals” (Macy personal papers, LBJ Library), the policy basis for all federal employment discrimination against gays and lesbians, declaring homosexuals ‘unsuitable’ for federal employment,” Francis said.
The two gay and lesbian history documents are now publicly exhibited in “Creating the United States,” displayed at the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress until October, 2011, according to the Library curatorial staff. For details on the exhibit itself as well as visiting information, please see: http://myloc.gov/Exhibitions/creatingtheus/Pages/Default.aspx

Jim Collins Foundation Awards its First Grant for Gender-Confirming Surgery

The Jim Collins Foundation is proud to announce that its first grant for gender-confirming surgery has been awarded to Drew Lodi (pictured). The Jim Collins Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, raises funds to provide grants to transgender individuals who need, but cannot afford, gender-confirming surgery.

"Our hard work is paying off," says Tony Ferraiolo, one of the organization’s co-founders. "Friends, families, and allies have helped us to raise these funds, and with their help we are able to fulfill our mission by providing Drew with the surgery that he has long awaited."

Drew came out as transgender to his family and friends in 2008. He states that "the Jim Collins Foundation for me is a miracle. They helped me to stay motivated to live each day purposefully…I improved my life, mind, body, relationships, and faith. To know that people are out there who do NOT have to be helping--but are--makes me motivated to do everything I can…"

Drew submitted his application for a grant in hopes of receiving funds to help him obtain gender-confirming surgery that, for far too long, seemed impossible to afford. In preparation for surgery, Drew collected cans three to five days a week, keeping in mind that "five cents was way more than zero."

The mission of the Jim Collins Foundation is to provide financial assistance to transgender people for gender-confirming surgeries. The Jim Collins Foundation recognizes that not every transgender person needs or wants surgery to achieve a healthy transition. But for those who do, gender-confirming surgeries are an important step in their transition to being their true selves. However, access to gender-confirming surgery is impossible for most. Discrimination against transgender people is so prevalent that many transgender people struggle to survive, never mind save for surgery costs. Even for those who have health insurance, coverage is systematically denied. Many insurance policies contain a “Transsexual Exclusion Clause” which excludes all medical procedures related to a person’s transgender status. For many transgender people, access to surgery is out of reach.

Presbyterian Church Vote Affirms LGBT Clergy Called to Serve the Church

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today applauded the decision of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to remove all barriers to the ordination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as ministers and lay leaders.  Today, the Twin Cities Presbytery in Minneapolis, Minn. became the 87th presbytery (regional governing bodies) in the 2.4 million member denomination to vote to allow LGBT clergy and lay people the right to serve openly as ministers.

“History was made today,” said Dr. Sharon Groves, director of HRC’s Religion and Faith Program.  “Presbyteries all around the country – from Alabama to Utah – voted to say no to prejudice and yes to those who are called to serve the church.  Through this action, the Presbyterian Church (USA) removes one more road block in the way of justice.  Because of today’s decision, a young person is freer to claim his or her sexual orientation, gender identity and religion.  This decision will have profound ramifications for people of all faiths everywhere.

Today’s decision is the result of a long process.   Three other times, a vote was taken in the Presbyterian General Assembly to open the doors to LGBT clergy, but did not reach the 51% ratification by regional presbyteries.  Because of the hard and faithful work by organizations such as More Light Presbyterians, Covenant Network of Presbyterians, That All May Freely Serve, Presbyterian Welcome, and Presbyterian Voices for Justice, the Presbyterian Church (USA) can hold its head high today.  The Human Rights Campaign is deeply grateful to the decades of tremendous dedication these faithful organizations have devoted to making our religious traditions more loving places for all of us.  We are all the beneficiaries of their labor and we at HRC are deeply grateful.

“This is not only good for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people but it is good for the soul of the church,” added Groves.  “LGBT Presbyterians have been some of the most prophetic and faithful leaders within the Presbyterian church and now they can bring their faith and their humanity fully into the work of building loving, God-affirming communities.”

House Committee to take aim at DADT repeal tomorrow

Tomorrow, the House Armed Services Committee will mark up the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012.  Several Republican members of the committee have already announced that they will offer amendments to the NDAA that would slow down the repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law and attempt to distract from the real issue – allowing gays and lesbians to serve free from discrimination – by once again employing scare tactics about religious liberty.

NHL’s New York Rangers Promote Marriage Equality

Further proof that America is at a historic tipping point on gay rights issues – and specifically marriage -- came yesterday in the form of two tweets and a Facebook post from an unexpected ally: the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers. The Rangers become the first professional sports team to actively promote marriage equality by advancing a video released on Saturday in favor of marriage equality in New York State by Rangers player Sean Avery. Earlier today, the team tweeted about it and posted news of it on their Facebook page. Madison Square Garden, the home of the Rangers, later re-tweeted the Rangers’ message.

Sean Avery’s video was the subject of this story in Sunday’s New York Times. Avery is currently in his fifth season with the New York Rangers and helped take the team to the 2011 playoffs. The New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign is centered on video testimonials from New Yorkers who support the right of committed same-sex couples to marry. To date, HRC has released over 30 videos from a diverse group of New Yorkers ranging from Barbara Bush to Julianne Moore.

The fact that a professional sports team – and from the rough and tumble game of hockey, no less -- would be willing to support marriage equality is clear indication that there’s growing support for LGBT equality issues across the board. Over the last month, three different polls have indicated that a majority of Americans now support marriage equality. In New York, a poll recently released by the Siena Research Institute shows public support for marriage equality at 58 percent. No doubt that there are battles ahead, but today, history was made.

Alliance Appluads 2011 Senate Resolution for Adolescent Health

The Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance is pleased with the passage of a Senate Resolution to declare June “Colorado Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Month” as a step toward effectively implementing comprehensive sexual health education in Colorado schools. By passing this Resolution, the State is recognizing that summer marks a time when students might not have access to the education and resources they need to make informed, responsible, healthy decisions.

“This Resolution shows that policy makers across Colorado are making the connection between informed youth and responsible decisions,” said Lisa Olcese, Executive Director of The Healthy Youth Colorado Alliance. “For too many years, we have simply thrown our hands in the air when confronted with negative news about unintended teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. But this Resolution lets everyone know that there are solutions out there – solutions based on access to comprehensive sexuality education.”

The passage of the Colorado Resolution coincides with the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.

By the time Colorado high-school students are seniors, over 60 percent are sexually active. In Colorado, youth in poor counties and youth of color face the highest risk of teen pregnancy. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 1 in 4 young women in the U.S. between the ages of 14 and 19 currently has at least one sexually transmitted infection, and young people ages 13-19 account for more than one-third of all new HIV infections, more than any other age group nationally.

The costs of teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections do not just impact youth. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, the annual costs for taxpayers associated with teen pregnancy are nearly $150 million. Further, teen parenthood is the number one reason why young people drop out of school.

“The birthrate in Colorado has dropped 33% between 1991 and 2008. This significant decline is due in large part to the efforts of educators, parents, and advocates who have worked to make sure all of Colorado’s young people have received real, comprehensive, sex education,” continued Olcese. “However, if Coloradans do not continue to push for increased access to sexuality education and prevention services for our young people, we are in danger of a significant backslide. Negative sexual outcomes are costing taxpayers money, and they are costing young people their health, their futures and, in some cases, their lives, We want to especially thank Senator Boyd for sponsoring this Resolution, which is one more step toward acknowledging the challenges facing young people in Colorado and making quality sex education across Colorado a reality.”

Organizations supporting the Resolution include: American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Colorado Section, Bell Policy Center, Boulder Valley Women's Health Center, Campaign for a Strong Colorado, Children’s Hospital Immunodeficiency Program Youth Project, Colorado AIDS Project, Colorado Association of School Nurses, Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights, Colorado Organizations Responding to AIDS, Colorado Progressive Coalition, Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition. Colorado Youth Matter, Denver School Based Health Clinics, Denver Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, The Freedom Fund, Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, GLBT Community Center of Colorado, The Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance, Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, Latina Initiative, Look Both Ways, NARAL Pro Choice Colorado, National Council of Jewish Women - Colorado Section, New Era Colorado, Northern Colorado AIDS Project, One Colorado, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, ProgressNow Colorado, Red Ribbon Project, The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice - Colorado Chapter, Sexual Assault Victims Advocate Center, Western Equality, and Youth HIV Advocacy Coalition.

U.S. Attorney General intervenes in gay man's deportation

Interesting stuff! Attorney General Eric Holder (pictured) has asked the Board of Immigration Appeals to reconsider the case of Paul Wilson Dorman, a gay man who is in the U.S. illegally and who had been cleared for deportation.

Holder wants the panel to consider whether Dorman, who is in a civil union under New Jersey law with his U.S. partner, would be considered a spouse if the federal Defense of Marriage Act was not in place.

It's like Carnivale all over again as Brazil rules for marriage equality

Brazil's top court ruled Thursday that same-sex couples are legally entitled to the same rights and benefits afforded heterosexual couples under the country's laws. The unanimous ruling means same-sex couples will be covered by laws governing things such as pension benefits, inheritance and possibly adoption.

Bill Clinton, daughter endorse N.Y. marriage equality

Former President Bill Clinton has released a statement urging New York legislators to approve marriage rights for same-sex couples

"For more than a century, our Statue of Liberty has welcomed all kinds of people from all over the world yearning to be free. In the 21st century, I believe New York's welcome must include marriage equality," Clinton said. Clinton's daughter Chelsea also expressed support for marriage rights for gays and lesbians, adding that she hoped her straight friends would join her in speaking out. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is planning to travel the state to build support for a marriage-equality bill.

I've got mixed feelings on this. I mean, Clinton's the guy behind DOMA in the first place, right? So how much credit should he get for this and how much blame should he get for the whole mess in the first place?

New York Rangers' Sean Avery is a New Yorker for Marriage Equality

New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery has teamed up with the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – in a new video for its “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign. In the video, Avery explains, “I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated, and that applies to marriage.” The campaign, which raises the public profile of marriage equality in New York, can be viewed online at www.hrc.org/NY4marriage.

Does King & Spalding's withdrawal mark a shift in marriage debate?

A major law firm's decision to abandon a case involving the Defense of Marriage Act could signal a key moment in the national discussion over marriage equality, writes Adam Liptak. It could be "the moment at which opposition to same-sex marriage came to look like bigotry, similar to racial discrimination and the subordination of women," Liptak writes.

HRC to Rick Santorum: Get Your Facts Straight and Put Children First

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest civil rights organization dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality, today denounced former Pennsylvania senator and presidential hopeful Rick Santorum’s comments that adoption is a privilege that gay people are not entitled to.  Despite the fact that over 100,000 children and youth across the country are in need of a loving home, and years of research that confirms sexual orientation has nothing to do with one’s ability to raise a child, Santorum continues to tell lies about LGBT families and myths about child welfare.

“If Rick Santorum wants to talk about family values, he should talk about the need to find permanent homes for every child – that is a value we all share,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese.  “At a time when we have a child welfare crisis on our hands, Rick Santorum resorts to spreading lies about our families.  The leading child welfare experts agree that adoptive parents should be judged by their character and their ability to raise a child, not their marital status or sexual orientation.”

The Child Welfare League of America, the nation’s oldest and largest child welfare organization, opposes restrictions on adoption and believes that applicants should be assessed on their ability to parent a child, not on their marital status or sexual orientation.  The North American Council on Adoptable Children opposes laws and legislation that restrict the consideration of prospective foster and adoptive parents based on their sexual orientation.

“It is distressing that too many politicians are turning to their old games of discrimination and prejudice, on the backs of our children and families, to get attention,” said Ellen Kahn, Director of HRC’s Family Project and a professional social worker.  “Years of research, public opinion, and the child welfare profession conclude that discrimination is not in the best interest of the children.  They simply delay or deny access to stable, loving homes and force kids to languish in the foster care system.”

Won't anybody think of the children? New Arizona adoption law favors married heterosexuals

Gov. Jan Brewer, R-Ariz., recently signed a bill into law that gives married heterosexual couples preference over singles and gay couples in adopting children. The law, which applies both to publicly funded and private adoption agencies, goes into effect 90 days after the end of the legislative session.
