New CDC campaign encourages black gay and bisexual men to get tested for HIV
To
increase HIV testing rates among one of the populations most affected
by HIV, black gay and bisexual men, CDC also launched a new national
awareness campaign, Testing Makes Us Stronger. CDC collaborated
with gay and bisexual community leaders, physicians and other experts to
develop the campaign, which strives to raise awareness, improve access
and increase the number of black gay and bisexual men who are aware of
their HIV status: the first step to care, treatment and prevention
services.
Testing
Makes Us Stronger encourages men to “stay strong and informed.” The ads
depict a diverse range of black gay men, including individuals and
couples. The campaign includes national print and online advertising; a
dedicated website and Facebook page; promotion at black gay pride
events; and outdoor and transit advertising in gay and African-American
neighborhoods in six cities where black gay and bisexual men are heavily
affected by HIV – Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston, New York City, Oakland,
Calif., and Washington, D.C.
“Black
gay and bisexual men across the country are already doing many of the
right things to protect themselves – but more need to make HIV testing a
regular part of their lives,” said Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of
CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and
Tuberculosis Prevention. “Testing Makes Us Stronger was designed by
black gay men for black gay men and strives to communicate the power of
knowing your HIV status as a first step toward staying healthy.”
Research
shows that black gay and bisexual men do not engage in riskier
behaviors than other gay men, but are at higher risk for HIV due to the
high prevalence of HIV that already exists in many black and gay
communities, increasing the likelihood of becoming infected with each
sexual encounter.
In
addition to increasing testing and ensuring that people with HIV remain
in care, CDC scientists stress that proven approaches to risk reduction
– such as consistent condom use and reducing the number of sexual
partners – among uninfected individuals will also remain critical. In
part, because of the substantial amount of HIV transmission that occurs
during the early stages of HIV infection, well before diagnosis and
treatment can occur.
Testing
Makes Us Stronger is the latest campaign of Act Against AIDS, CDC’s
umbrella campaign to fight complacency about HIV nationwide. Other Act
Against AIDS campaigns include those which focus on African-American
women, African-American youth, health care providers and the general
public.
3 out of 4 HIV+ Americans do not have their infection under control
Nearly 3 out of 4
Americans living with HIV do not have their infection under control,
according to a Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, released today in advance of World AIDS Day, December 1.
The authors say the low percentage is because 1 in 5 people with HIV do
not realize they are infected and, of those who are aware, only 51
percent receive ongoing medical care and treatment.
Of
the nearly 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States,
only an estimated 28 percent have a suppressed viral load (defined as
viral load less than 200 copies of the blood-borne virus per milliliter
of blood) – meaning that the virus is under control and at a level that
helps keep them healthy and reduces the risk of transmitting the virus
to others.
However,
of those living with HIV who are in ongoing care and on antiretroviral
treatment, 77 percent have suppressed levels of the virus. Effective HIV
treatment and care benefit infected individuals by improving their
health, and are also important for HIV prevention. Results from a recent
study of heterosexual couples from the National Institutes of Health
showed that consistently taking antiretroviral therapy, in combination
with safer behaviors, can reduce the risk of spreading HIV by
approximately 96 percent.
“While
we have known that viral suppression can be achieved with proper HIV
treatment and care, today’s new Vital Signs data highlight the
challenges our country faces in keeping HIV-positive Americans in the
care they need to control the virus,” said CDC Director Thomas R.
Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “By improving testing, linkage to care and
treatment services, we can help people living with HIV feel better and
live longer, and can reduce the spread of HIV dramatically. This is not
just an individual responsibility, but a responsibility for families,
partners, communities and health care providers.”
Men
who have sex with men (MSM), the population most severely affected by
HIV in the United States, are least likely to know they are infected and
less likely to receive prevention counseling (39 percent, compared with
50 percent of men who have sex with women and women who have sex with
men).
Study
authors underscore that improvements are needed at each stage in the
overall process of treatment and care. That means increasing the number
of infected Americans who are tested, linked to care, remain in care,
receive prevention counseling and are successfully treated – all to
achieve viral suppression.
“Closing
the gaps in testing, access to care and treatment will all be essential
to slowing the U.S. HIV epidemic,” said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director
of CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. “HIV testing is the most
important first step toward breaking the cycle of transmission. Combined
with effective prevention services, linkage to care and ongoing
effective treatment, testing provides a gateway to the most effective
prevention tools at our disposal.”

Scholarships available for gay journalists
The
National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) today
announced a call for entries for the Leroy F. Aarons and the Kay
Longcope scholarships, which are awarded to students who demonstrate a
commitment to providing fair and accurate coverage of the lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. These annual scholarships are
presented in honor of two prominent journalists. Applications are available online and will be accepted until January 20, 2012.
“We are
devoted to creating educational opportunities to support the next
generation of LGBT newsroom leaders,” says NLGJA Executive Director
Michael Tune, “There are many still untold stories from the LGBT
community and we are thrilled to be able to help further the education
of two outstanding students concerned about the fair and accurate
portrayal of the community in the news.”
The Leroy F. Aarons scholarship was
established in 2005 to honor NLGJA founder Leroy Aarons and to continue
his work of fostering fair and accurate coverage of lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender issues from within the news industry. Past
winners are: Sharyn Jackson (2011), Mary Susman (2010), Ryan McLendon
(2009), Matthew Leung (2008), Colin Dugdale (2007) and Dennis Mitchell
(2006).
The Kay Longcope scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Boston Globe journalist Kay Longcope, who co-founded the Texas Triangle,
a LGBT weekly newspaper that would eventually grow to become the major
source for all things gay in Texas, covering the gamut from news to art,
relationships to music reviews. This scholarship has been awarded twice
before and will continue to fund a LGBT student of color who plans a
career in journalism. Past winners are: Fenit Nirappil (2011) and Carl
Gaines (2010).
NLGJA partners with The Philadelphia Foundation (TPF), a community foundation established in 1918, to administer the NLGJA Student Scholarship Fund. The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund,
a component fund of TPF serving to advance philanthropy within the LGBT
communities, will disburse the scholarship awards on recommendations
from NLGJA during each award period.
World AIDS Day tomorrow - Candlelight Vigil and free HIV Tests in Denver
In recognition of World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains is partnering with ONE Colorado, the Denver STD/HIV Prevention Training Center, Colorado Organizations Responding to AIDS (CORA), and The GLBT Community Center of Colorado to offer free HIV testing locations throughout the Denver Metro Area and Colorado Springs.
A candlelight vigil, open to the public, will also be held on the west steps of the State Capitol beginning at 5:30 p.m. to remember those who have been impacted by HIV/AIDS. The vigil will feature guest speakers Dr. Mark Thrun, director of HIV Prevention and STD Control for Denver Public Health and with the Denver STD/HIV Prevention Training Center, and Dr. Benjamin Young, executive medical director for Rocky Mountain Cares. Rocky Mountain Cares provides high quality centralized medical care and supportive services to a diverse and inclusive Colorado HIV/AIDS community.
World AIDS Day first originated in 1988. This year’s campaign focuses on Getting to Zero—from zero new HIV infections to zero discrimination to zero AIDS related deaths.
“It’s exciting to see Colorado’s nonprofit community come together for this year’s campaign, said Amy Dickson, PPRM vice president of clinical services. Getting to zero stands for a push towards greater access to treatment for all and a call for governments to act now—all the organizations involved in this year’s event touch on some aspect of this overarching theme. Planned Parenthood is so proud to offer the community free HIV testing on Dec. 1. Testing is the first step to prevention.”
While the American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated their recommendation for HIV testing to begin at age 16 for some teens, stigma, fear, judgment and other barriers continue to get in the way of routine testing. Every 9.5 minutes someone in the United States is infected with HIV and 1 in 5 individuals don’t know that they are HIV positive.
“Thirty years ago the first case of HIV/AIDS was reported in the Unites States. While we have made huge advancements in treatment we still have a large distance to travel. We estimate that there are about 11,000 people in Colorado who are known to be living with HIV. And 2000-3000 are living with HIV, but are not yet diagnosed. Approximately 430 people are diagnosed with HIV in Colorado each year. The Obama administration has developed a national strategy which is to serve as a concise plan for moving the country forward, but knowing your status is still the most important step an individual can take to prevent the spread of HIV,” said Dr. Mark Thrun, medical director, HIV prevention/Denver Public Health.
Testing is simple; PPRM’s HIV test is a finger prick and results are available within 12 minutes or less. On Dec. 1, clients are encouraged to make an appointment or walk in to any of the testing locations.
The free testing sites and vigil are just a few of the many events in honor of World AIDS Day. St Paul United Methodist & Inter-Spiritual Community will be hosting a Service of Remembrance & Celebration at The GLBT Community Center of Colorado on Dec. 1 from 4-5 p.m. In addition, CORA is participating in an educational and visibility campaign called Get Your Cake On. Through this effort, bakeries across Colorado are spreading the word through red ribbon cupcakes. During the week of Nov. 28, stop by a participating bakery to get your cake on. Local bakeries participating in this campaign can be found on Facebook.

CAVP celebrates 25 years of fighting violence
The Colorado Anti-Violence Program (CAVP) is honored to commemorate its 25th anniversary with a celebration and fundraiser, "Rooting Down, Rising Up: Celebrating 25 Years of CAVP," on December 8, 2011 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Tivoli Turnhalle
on the Auraria Campus. Founded 25 years ago as a response to anti-LGBTQ
hate violence, CAVP has since grown into a statewide organization
dedicated to eliminating violence within and against the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities in Colorado.
The evening's Queer Entertainment Showcase, emceed by local performer, LadySpeech and CAVP Board Member, Mimi Madrid will include music by Ian Cooke, an inspirational LGBTQ Movement History theater piece performed by artist, Laurie Lynch, drag performances and the creation of a CAVP Community Time Capsule with the help of guest participation during the event. Tickets are available for $25. Discounts are available for youth, elders and people with a limited income.
Greta Davis Leach, Director of Sustainability shared this about the event, "We are excited to highlight and celebrate the strengths of our community
while growing our relationships and support within the LGBTQ and allied
communities, both in terms of volunteer support and financial
sustainability. Events like Rooting Down, Rising Up help us reach new
people and share our passion for building safe and vibrant LGBTQ
communities."
Each year, CAVP provides support to 300-400 survivors
of intimate partner violence, hate violence, sexual assault and other
forms of violence through the organization's statewide 24 hour hotline
and trains about 1,500 service providers, victim
advocates, shelter staff, healthcare providers, and law enforcement
providing participants with knowledge and skills to effectively serve
LGBTQ survivors of violence and to create institutional change in their
own organizations. In
the last four years, CAVP has successfully advocated for at least 12
domestic violence and homeless shelters to adopt transgender inclusive
policies and provided training and technical assistance to countless
other organizations serving LGBTQ survivors of violence. CAVP
also offers volunteer training and education to individuals interested
in becoming hotline advocates or getting involved in other ways.
Since
launching Branching Seedz of Resistance, an innovative youth-led
organizing project in 2009, CAVP has made tremendous strides in building
a base of young LGBTQ leaders throughout the state and across the
country. Branching Seedz of Resistance uses art, media, community
organizing, outreach and education to build healthy, safer and empowered
youth communities. "By providing education and outreach to
thousands of Coloradans each year, CAVP is helping to create a culture
of safety and acceptance for LGBTQ adults, youth and survivors of
violence," said Eleanor Dewey, Director of Youth Organizing.
As
the only organizations of its kind in Colorado, CAVP is an active
member of the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), and
collects and contributes data to two national annual national reports on
hate violence and intimate partner violence.

Buell Theatre. By the time the triumphant, five-week return engagement
concludes on Sunday, December 4, it will have entertained nearly 110,000

The Good Wife’s Josh Charles Joins HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality
Today the Human Rights Campaign released a web ad featuring actor Josh Charles – one of People’s Sexiest Men Alive and star of The Good Wife and Threesome, one of the first gay movies I ever saw – for its Americans for Marriage Equality campaign.
In the ad, Charles, who plays a lawyer on CBS’ Emmy Award winning legal drama, says, “You don’t need a law degree to understand fundamental fairness.”
“Like most Americans, Josh Charles believes all couples should have the opportunity to say ‘I do,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “Loving gay and lesbian couples should be able to express their commitment to each other, and strengthen their families through marriage.”
Charles was nominated for an Emmy for his role on The Good Wife and gained critical acclaim early in his career as Knox Overstreet in Dead Poets Society. His ad is the sixth released by HRC for the Americans campaign. Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker, one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the world, kicked off the series followed by Oscar winner Mo’Nique, civil rights legend Julian Bond, Emmy Award winner John Leguizamo, and acclaimed Broadway playwright Katori Hall.
About 53% of the American public supports marriage for same-sex couples, according to a number of nonpartisan polls, including Gallup, CNN, and Washington Post/ABC News.
Americans for Marriage Equality is a public engagement campaign featuring prominent Americans who support committed gay and lesbian couples getting married. The campaign draws from a cadre of supportive professional athletes, film and music celebrities, political and civic leaders. Over the coming months, HRC will roll out targeted videos playing off of the Americans brand, including Republicans for Marriage Equality, African-Americans for Marriage Equality, Latinos for Marriage Equality and Elected Officials for Marriage Equality.

HRC Adoption Forum Featuring HHS Commissioner on Children, Youth and Families
U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Commissioner of the
Administration for Children, Youth and Families Bryan Samuels, is
joining the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, LGBT
families, and representatives from area child welfare agencies, for an
adoption forum on Wednesday November 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. to recognize
the close of National Adoption Month, and to call on child welfare
professionals to include LGBT families, year-round, in their efforts to
expand the pool of families for foster youth. A new video by the HRC
Family Project on LGBT adoption will be premiered at the forum. The
event will stream live at www.hrc.org/adoptionforum.
HRC has celebrated adoptive families throughout National Adoption Month
and is offering a wealth of resources related to adoption and other
issues important to LGBT families at www.hrc.org/issues/adoption.
“As we end National Adoption Month, the work of finding permanent families for children and youth continues—it’s everyday work for child welfare professionals,” said Ellen Kahn, HRC Family Project Director and a professional social worker. “Today we are recognizing several public agencies that have expanded their efforts to find families by reaching out to the LGBT community, a largely untapped resource. By partnering with HRC’s ACAF, these agencies have improved their practice with LGBT families and as a result are seeing an increase in foster and adoptive parents.”
This month, HRC issued All Children-All Families Seals of Recognition to Alameda County, CA, and to the state of New Jersey’s Resource Family Division, which join Los Angeles County as the only public social services agencies to earn the seal for their success in implementing the ACAF policies and practices. HRC also issued the ACAF Seal of Recognition to Forever Families Through Adoption, a New York- and Connecticut-authorized adoption placement agency and resource center in Rye Brook, New York. Bryan Samuels, Commissioner of the Administration on Children, Youth and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will join several of these agency leaders, and foster/adoptive families, to discuss this initiative and to feature a new video about this work.
“We have more than 100,000 children in foster care in the United States waiting for a permanent family. Child welfare systems with responsibilities for finding potential parents now have resources through HRC’s All Children-All Families to reach out to caring and competent families in the LGBT community,” said Commissioner Bryan Samuels.
HRC has created a resource center for families considering adoption at www.hrc.org/issues/adoption with information about adoption agencies that work with LGBT families, answers to frequently asked questions about adoption and foster care, a video montage called Gay Parents Speak, featuring real parents telling their stories of adopting and loving children, and links to related programs and organizations.
The “All Children – All Families” initiative, launched in 2007, promotes policies and practices that welcome LGBT foster and adoptive parents. The program seeks to enhance LGBT cultural competence among child welfare professionals and educate LGBT people about opportunities to become foster or adoptive parents to waiting children. To date, ACAF has 50 participating agencies across the country, and has awarded 16 seals of recognition. In September HRC launched a “50 state strategy,” with the goal of securing at least one ACAF-recognized adoption agency dedicated to working with LGBT families in every state. More information about the initiative can be found at www.hrc.org/acaf.

The return of Bearracuda Denver was beary successful!
Whoo-hoo!
So it looks like the party will be returning - most likely sometime in February, 2012 or so.
I'll be sure to keep ya posted and you know I'll be sponsoring it again. I haven't had that much fun in a loooong time.
In the meantime, check out these pics from Bearracuda (above and left - there'd be more but I decided it was more important for me to party than snap pics) as well as the Official Pre-Bearracuda party hosted by Wes and Ross (below).

Statement by President Obama on Congressman Barney Frank’s Retirement
President Obama issued the following statement today in response to the retirement of LGBT activist Congressman Barney Frank's retirement:
" This
country has never had a Congressman like Barney Frank, and the House of
Representatives will not be the same without him. For over 30 years,
Barney has been a fierce advocate for the people of Massachusetts and
Americans everywhere who needed a voice. He has worked tirelessly on
behalf of families and businesses and helped make housing more
affordable. He has stood up for the rights of LGBT Americans and fought
to end discrimination against them. And it is only thanks to his
leadership that we were able to pass the most sweeping financial reform
in history designed to protect consumers and prevent the kind of
excessive risk-taking that led to the financial crisis from ever
happening again. Barney’s passion and his quick wit will be missed in
the halls of Congress, and Michelle and I join the people of the Bay
State in thanking him for his years of service."

World AIDS Day with BCAP
Over
7,000 people are infected worldwide with HIV everyday, with 33 million people
currently living with HIV/AIDS. On World AIDS Day, BCAP honors the approximately 500 men,
women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in BCAP’s service area of Boulder, Broomfield,
Gilpin, and Clear Creek Counties.
World AIDS
Day reinforces the mission of Boulder County AIDS Project, which is twofold:
“To provide support, advocacy, and education to those in our community who are
infected with or affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and to
serve as an outreach and information center to prevent further transmission of
HIV and the resulting Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).”
One-hundred
percent of the funds raised at the World AIDS Day Concert will go to urgent
client basic needs, including medical and oral health, housing, and food—as
well as BCAP’s extensive HIV testing and prevention programs. Through the
years, BCAP has helped thousands of residents affected by HIV and AIDS. In
addition to assisting those living with HIV and AIDS, thousands of residents
have benefited from the group’s rapid HIV tests—an important tool to help
prevent the spread of the disease in the community.

Denver candlelight vigil in honor of World AIDS Day
In recognition of World AIDS Day, Dec.

Del Shores divorcing
A sad message from Del Shores' (left), creator of 'Sordid Lives', Facebook page on Sunday, November 27. Here's hoping the proceedings are anything but sordid:
To my fans and friends:
It saddens me to inform you that Jason Dottley and I are divorcing.
I will always cherish
the almost ten years that we were together -- married for eight,
legally for three. Jason was a wonderful husband to me and a great
step-father to my daughters. I will miss being his husband.
Jason and I both fought hard for marriage equality, and I will continue to
fight that fight until gay marriage is legal nationwide. Our divorce
only proves that like straight people who have the right to marry and divorce, we are all equally human.
I know we are going to
disappoint a lot of people and for that, I am truly sorry. But I will
never feel that we failed, and I have no regrets. This was not what I
wanted, but I must now accept what Jason wants. I only wish him the
very best and will celebrate his continued success.
I've had lots of losses
in my life, and I've found that I heal when I turn to my pen, my
writing and my work. I promise you more twisted stories, that will make
you laugh, think and maybe shed a tear
or two.
I welcome any words of support, but this is so hard, and privacy is important to me and my daughters during this difficult time.

NYC to widen web of AIDS surveillance?
Among a number of proposals that could be controversial, New York City’s
health department wants to collect more information on people with HIV
and to change state regulations to allow it to more widely use and share
that information with doctors and other health departments, according
to a prevention plan it filed with the federal Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC).
