Washington poised to legalize marriage between same-sex couples

Washington appears likely to become the seventh state to pass a marriage equality law, with Democratic state Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen (left) recently announcing she would cast a deciding vote in favor of a marriage equality bill. 

The state House has lined up majority support for the bill and Gov. Chris Gregoire has said she would sign the bill into law. If the bill passes, opponents are expected to challenge it with a referendum.
