Gay rights movement makes strides as more people come out
Why has the relatively young LGBT civil rights movement notched so much success so quickly? Familiarity, say some observers; LGBT people largely live among straight family members and co-workers.
“People came to understand we existed. ...That demystified it and made it harder for them to hate us in an abstract way," said Cleve Jones, a longtime LGBT activist who was a contemporary of Harvey Milk.
