Just got this message from Colorado Senator Michael Bennet. Definitely worth a read:
For
the first time in our history, an American president announced his
support for same-sex marriage. President Obama's comments that "same-sex
couples should be able to get married" reflect the growing sentiments
of a majority of Americans who believe that the time has come for
marriage equality.
Last
week in Colorado, our own state legislature came within hours of
passing civil unions with bipartisan support until politics stalled the
process at the last minute. But the promise of equal justice under the
law is still alive in Colorado thanks to Governor Hickenlooper's call
for a special session to continue considering this important bill.
With so much going on, I want to let you know where I stand. When it comes to marriage equality... you can count me in.
Gay
or straight, all couples want to get married for the same reasons. They
want to make lifetime commitments to love and care for each other.
Giving all Colorado families the legal and economic protections needed
to care for one another helps us build stronger communities and a more
just country.
Colorado
has come a long way since the days of Amendment 2, which prohibited
state government at all levels from passing non-discrimination laws
based on sexual orientation. But while Colorado is moving forward, we
can't lose sight of the work that’s still ahead.
There's something you can do right now to stand with President Obama and me. Will you sign my petition supporting marriage equality and help us continue to move America forward?
We
can no longer tolerate discrimination in our laws against any Coloradan
or American based on sexual orientation. It’s understandable that this
issue draws impassioned arguments from all sides, but it's my hope we
can move forward with a respectful and civil discussion worthy of the
best hopes and aspirations of the American people.
To
paraphrase Harvey Milk: "All men are created equal and they are endowed
with certain inalienable rights... No matter how hard you try, you
cannot erase those words..." Once again, our nation has recommitted
itself to our founding ideals and we are stronger for it.
