Dozens
of well-known Republican politicos, including four former governors,
have signed onto a brief submitted to the Supreme Court arguing in favor
of marriage rights for same-sex couples and urging the Court to find California's Proposition 8 unconstitutional. The document is at odds
with the position of House Republican leaders, whose lawyers are
defending the principle that marriage can be restricted by law to
heterosexual couples without running afoul of the Constitution.
"We are
trying to say to the court that we are judicial and political
conservatives, and it is consistent with our values and philosophy for
you to overturn Proposition 8," said Ken Mehlman, the former chair of
the Republican National Committee.
