The
Associated Press was right to update its stylebook to offer guidelines
on the terms "husband" and "wife" that are inclusive of same-sex
couples, Jennifer Vanasco writes. An AP internal memo issued last week
sparked controversy because it said reporters should generally use terms
such as "partner" in situations where married couples are of the same
sex.
"I’m happy to see that they listened to their many (correctly
angry) critics, including the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists
Association, and issued a new stylebook entry that is concise, fair --
and truthful," Vanasco writes.
