Colorado: Where the Outdoors and Arts Converge

Colorado’s scenic beauty lends itself to inspiring creativity, and the state is brimming with events and offerings that merge the arts with the outdoors this summer. With 18 official state Creative Districts, including six newly designated districts in Fort Collins, Breckenridge, Mancos, Crested Butte, Golden Triangle and Carbondale, artistic energy emerges from every corner of the state. Below is a sampling of unique arts, cultural and music events and offerings not to be missed this summer. 

Unique Summer Arts, Cultural and Music Events:
May 12, 2017 - Mishawaka Amphitheatre to Unveil Stage Side Tree Carving at Outdoor Opening Show: The 100-year-old Mishawaka Amphitheatre in the Poudre Canyon will kick-off its 2017 summer season with a concert featuring Wookiefoot and the unveiling of a new stage side carving. Boulder artist and musician Bongo Love carved a 50+-year-old dying cottonwood tree near the stage into a sculpture, “Phoenix Rising.”
 
May 27 - September 10, 2017The Western: An Epic in Art and Film at the Denver Art Museum: This is the first major exhibition to examine the Western genre and its evolution from the mid-1800s to the present through fine art, film and popular culture. Featuring 160 works, the exhibition explores gender roles, race relations and gun violence—offering a visual journey that is more than cowboys and American Indians, pursuits and duels, or bandits and barroom brawls.
 
June 10, 2017 - The Greeley Blues Jam, Greeley: Kick-off the weekend with free Friday pre-festival activities in Historic Downtown Greeley including headliners, Rev Billy C Wirtz and Josh Hoyer & the Soul Colossal, as well as blues bands in 14 bars and restaurants in the downtown area. Saturday includes music from The Grace Kuch Band and Walter Trout. The intimate “Blues 101 Stage,” sponsored by the Colorado Blues Society, will feature some of the most talented blues performers from Colorado.
 
June 11-18, 2017 - Boulder Plein Air Festival: This inaugural festival is a weeklong celebration of remarkable landscapes, scenic cityscapes, unique workshops and free events. Open Studios invites visitors to observe 20 master painters in action—making their art on location in beautiful Boulder County. The public is invited to participate in the creativity with plenty of festival activities including receptions, exhibitions, lectures, and the opportunity to collect a masterpiece.
 
June 30-July 2, 2017 - BLUEBIRD Art + Sound, Snowmass: BLUEBIRD Art + Sound is a new, distinctive art and world-class music experience in Snowmass. The weekend includes an art walk on the Snowmass Mall, an A-list interactive tented art experience in Base Village and musical performances on the Fanny Hill Stage.
 
July 7, 2017 - Art on the Streets Launch Party, Colorado Springs: A celebration of the launch of the Downtown Creative District’s signature annual public art exhibit, this event will feature 12 new works of art from around the globe. Live music in the park and free walking tours of the exhibit begin at 5 p.m. along with regular First Friday activities at 25 galleries and venues around the District.
 
July 15-16, 2017 - The Telluride Art + Architecture Weekend:  A project of Telluride Arts, attendees can linger at each of the 10 venues for an intimate peek into the work of Telluride's extremely talented local architects, designers, artists and chefs. The weekend will include home tours, art exhibits, performances and food and wine tastings at each stop on the tour. Also included are art lectures, trunk shows, a historic walking tour and a closing party. 
 
July 27-30, 2017 - The Underground Music Showcase, Denver: Denver’s premier indie music festival is back this summer with its 17th edition. The UMS is widely regarded as the best opportunity to explore and discover Colorado’s local independent music scene.  Known for bringing a compelling mix of local and national talent during four days, this year’s festival showcases close to 400 local and national performances across an eclectic mix of venues.
 
July 28-30, 2017Mountain Fair, Carbondale: Mountain Fair draws over 145 vendors poised to bring their unique and diverse homemade wares to town each summer. In addition to vendors, Mountain Fair features non-stop entertainment–both in live music and various forms of performing arts, a family-area called The Oasis providing interactive experiences for children and more. 
 
August 11-20, 2017 - Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA): Presented by BreckCreate and inspired by themes of environment and mountain culture, BIFA is a 10-day multi-arts festival that brings together an eclectic mix of music, dance, film, visual arts and family entertainment, and features a lineup of premieres, debuts and Breckenridge exclusives.
 
September 15-17, 2017CRUSH, Denver: CRUSH is a weeklong celebration of graffiti and street art in Denver’s RiNo Art District. The annual event is free and open to the public to enjoy a curated outdoor gallery. With artists painting, activities for visitors, specials and promotions throughout the neighborhood, there is something for everyone. Centered on empowering artists, CRUSH is committed to reflecting and diversifying the urban landscape and the unique voice of a community, by bringing art out of the galleries and into the streets. 
 
October 5, 2017 - Third Annual Community Iron Pour, Crested Butte: The Art Studio of the Center for the Arts in Crested Butte will host their Community Collaborative, Iron Pour, which is the creation of sculpture through the pouring of molten iron into molds. In the weeks leading up to the pour, The Art Studio will provide artists with the opportunity to work on pieces to cast at the pour. Trained teams will work together to carefully cast each sculpture, as onlookers enjoy taking in the beauty and magnitude of this community art making project. In the evening, performances will begin with sparks and rivers of iron, and spectators can enjoy the glowing iron “light show.”
 
Arts and Cultural Attractions and Offerings:
 
Anderson Ranch Art Center, Snowmass: Set amidst an inspiring natural backdrop, Anderson Ranch is a hub of creative energy and activity for adults and children alike, offering a host of interactive art workshops, lectures by today's most influential artists and curators, weekend classes, children’s art workshops and more. This summer, guest faculty, including top contemporary artists, will teach over 140 workshops.
 
the ART, a hotel, Denver: The ART, a hotel, which opened in April 2015, is a 165-room boutique hotel next to the Denver Art Museum. The look and feel of the hotel are extremely unique, from the moment guests arrive through a portico-like entrance past open spaces that are a showcase of modern art, all the way through the guest experience. The hotel has its own curator, and each suite features a vibrant wall covering.
 
Art on the Corner, Grand Junction: In addition to 18 art galleries, downtown Grand Junction is also home to Art on the Corner, a year-round outdoor sculpture exhibit that was one of the first of its kind in the country. The display is free to the public and includes more than 100 sculptures in a variety of mediums and styles. The program has been recognized and mimicked in communities across the world.
 
Art by Bike Guided Day Tour, Loveland: Known for its reputation as one of the best art towns in America, discover the “Sweetheart City“ of Loveland and its world-renowned public art collection by bike. A tour guide educated in local culture and historic area information takes riders on a 5 to 6 mile tour of Loveland’s public art collection with gallery and studio tours. Offered April to October 2017.
 
Cortez Cultural Center: Founded in 1987, the Cortez Cultural Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide an interactive forum for the community’s artistic, cultural, educational, historic and natural environment interests. It has become a home for artists, cowboy poets, archaeologists and musicians. The Cortez Cultural Center hosts Native American dances, cultural and Old West Heritage music shows and more throughout the summer.
 
Glenwood Vaudeville Revue, Glenwood Springs: Located in the historic Springs Theater, the comedy show features a cast of professional actors, singers, dancers and musicians. Each season the cast reinvents the show with new, original material. In addition to their hysterical, family-friendly Vaudeville shows, the venue also hosts special events including comedy shows and concerts.
 
Mancos School of the West: The school is a non-profit entity run entirely by volunteers, coming together to give working artists an opportunity to share their special skills and talents with others. Students learn skills from artistic masters in mediums ranging from ironwork to mosaic, photography to fibers, set against the splendid backdrop of the beautiful and historic Mancos Valley.
 
The Music District, Fort Collins: The Music District opened its doors in September 2016. A dynamic ecosystem designed to help develop and celebrate the art, business, and community surrounding music; the five-building campus features creative collaboration spaces where visitors can attend musical performances and workshops. Musicians, industry, scholars, non-profits, educators, audiences, and other creative sectors from Northern Colorado and around the world are invited to “Find Your Place in Music” at the Music District.
 
Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts: This summer Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts presents “Broadway in the Mountains.” This multi-faceted theatre attracts professional talent from across the country. The show lineup features AIDA, Hairspray, Sister Act and Big River. But, instead of being overshadowed by the skyscrapers of New York City, patrons will be surrounded by towering pines and mountains of southwest Colorado. 
 
Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center, Pueblo: Pledging art for all, this multi-disciplinary center for the arts offers high-quality art exhibitions, performing arts, dance arts, an award-winning children’s museum, comprehensive arts educational programming, and an artistic space for meetings, performances and events. 

Silverthorne to Debut $9M Performing Arts Center: Slated to open in June 2017, The Silverthorne Performing Arts Center, at nearly 16,000 sq. ft., will be the largest new construction theater in the state of Colorado. The Silverthorne Performing Arts Center will house multiple theaters, each of varying sizes suitable for different performance styles, and will also include arts education labs, a modernized orchestral pit, rehearsal space, reception lobby & bar, administrative offices, and plenty of room for in-house costume and set production.
