President Obama kicks off Gay Pride Month

June is Pride Month for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. This is an opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made, and recommit ourselves to the work ahead.

To help kick off LGBT Pride Month, today President Obama recorded the following video message to Americans across the country:

In addition, the President also issued a Proclamation where he describes the progress we’ve made over the last few years and our ongoing commitment to the rights of LGBT Americans. The Proclamation says in part:

Since I took office, my Administration has worked to broaden opportunity, advance equality, and level the playing field for LGBT people and communities. We have fought to secure justice for all under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and we have taken action to end housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We expanded hospital visitation rights for LGBT patients and their loved ones, and under the Affordable Care Act, we ensured that insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage to someone just because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Because we understand that LGBT rights are human rights, we continue to engage with the international community in promoting and protecting the rights of LGBT persons around the world. Because we repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans can serve their country openly, honestly, and without fear of losing their jobs because of whom they love. And because we must treat others the way we want to be treated, I personally believe in marriage equality for same-sex couples.

On Friday, June 15 the member galleries of Denver's Art District on Santa Fe will be celebrating Gay on Santa Fay. The event is a kick off for the Denver PrideFest weekend.

As part of Gay on Santa Fay, DonCampbell Images Studio and Gallery is hosting 'The Male Form', an exhibit of fine art male nude photography, sculpture, and drawings. The photography and sculpture are the work of award winning artist Don Campbell and the male nude drawings are the work of deceased artist Will Laughlin.

Campbell's Photography has been exhibited in galleries throughout the country including the Leslie/ Lohman Art Museum in New York City, the Kinsey Art Museum at the University of Indiana, and the Los Angles Center for Digital Art.

His sculptures have also been exhibited throughout the country including the New Art Center in New York City, the Teal Gallery in Breckenridge, CO, Visions Gallery in Dallas, TX, and Sculpture in the Park, Loveland, CO. Campbell has won numerous awards for his photography and sculpture and some of his photographs are in the permanent collections of art museums.

Gay rights movement makes strides as more people come out

Recognized as a leader in the civil rights movement and the business world, Bruce Bastian, an entrepreneur, Utah philanthropist, and long-time board member of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Westminster College at its commencement ceremony this weekend. Bastian co-founded the WordPerfect Corporation in 1978 and served as its Chairman until 1994. He is also the founder of the B. W. Bastian Foundation, which supports organizations that embrace the principle of equality. The Bastian Foundation is committed to supporting programs and organizations that benefit, encourage and preserve the rights of individuals, and promote LGBT equality.

“Bruce Bastian has dedicated his life to making the lives of others better,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “Bruce remains a leader in the fight for equality, not only for the LGBT community, but for all who are marginalized by society. His charitable work includes funding shelters for homeless youth, supporting the arts, and serving on the board of directors of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization. We commend Bruce for his hard work and dedication to humanity.”

In addition to receiving an honorary degree, Bruce Bastian will also deliver the commencement address at Westminster College’s commencement ceremony.

“No matter where you are in life, hearing Bruce’s story will serve as inspiration,” Solmonese added. “Bruce’s lifetime accomplishments are many and he has much wisdom to share. If one graduate is inspired by Bruce’s leadership, Utah and America will be a fairer place.”

HRC Praises Lambda Legal and ACLU Lawsuits Seeking Marriage Equality in Illinois

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, lauds Lambda Legal and the ACLU for filing coordinated lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of Illinois disparate treatment of same-sex couples under state law. The cases, limited to the state of Illinois, seek recognition from the courts of the inferior status of civil unions.

“Thank you to the ACLU, Lambda Legal, and most importantly to the courageous couples who have made their stories public in order to achieve equality for all same-sex couples in Illinois ,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “These laws suits are a critical step on our journey. ”

HRC will continue to work in coalition with advocates in the state, such as Equality Illinois, to advance marriage equality legislation in the state House and Senate. Both the lawsuits and legislation promote critical conversations on the impact of discriminatory laws on same-sex couples and their families. Pursuing two strategies increases the odds of success in Illinois.

Eagle Scout delivers 275,000 signatures to Boy Scouts of America calling for an end to anti-gay discrimination

Eagle Scout and outspoken equality advocate Zach Wahls today delivered more than 275,000 signatures to the Boy Scouts of America calling on the group to end its long history of anti-gay discrimination and reinstate Ohio mom Jennifer Tyrrell, who in April was forcibly removed as den leader of her son's Boy Scouts troop because she's gay.

Since launching her Change.org petition, Tyrrell has worked with GLAAD to share her story in national media, garnering support from celebrities including Josh Hutcherson, Julianne Moore, Ricky Martin, stars of Glee and more than a quarter million Americans. Actress and recording artist Kat Graham this week dedicated her musical performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to Tyrrell and gay scouts everywhere.

After delivering the signatures, Wahls met briefly with Deron Smith, Public Relation Director with the Boy Scouts of America's national office.

"While today's meeting was productive and thoughtful, the delivery of these petitions marks the beginning of this journey, not the end," said Wahls. "I thought our dialogue today was an honest one, and I'm looking forward to continuing the conversation in the months ahead. We leave today one step closer to religious and personal freedom than when we arrived, and it's hard to be anything but thrilled about that."

Wahls, author of My Two Moms and whose online video in support of his gay moms went viral last year, delivered the signatures on behalf of Tyrrell. Wahls and Tyrrell will unite at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco this Saturday, June 2, to share their story. Wahls' new initiative, Out to Dinner, which aims to bring together gay and allied families with those still deciding, will launch later this month.

"I am so grateful for the support I've received from Zach and from the thousands of scouts, scout leaders and former scouts who have signed my petition," said Tyrrell. "If you look at the petition comments, and read through the thousands of entries left by current scouts and scout leaders, it's clear that the energy within the Boy Scouts of America's membership is there to change this policy. All it takes now is leadership."

Organizations including the Girl Scouts of America, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, as well as the 4H Club already welcome gay youth as well as adult leaders.
