Denver's transgender Girl Scout forms own troop

TransYouth Family Allies (TYFA), a national education and advocacy organization working to empower transgender youth and families, is proud to announce a nationwide girl scout cookie drive to support Bobby Montoya and her newly formed Girl Scout Troop 5-4665 in Denver, Colorado.

Bobby, a 7-year-old transgender girl from Denver, Colorado, garnered national media attention late last year after joining a local girl scout troop. After members from the local community expressed discomfort with her membership, Girl Scouts of Colorado released a statement supporting the young girl, saying: “If a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout.”

“We applaud Girl Scouts of Colorado for their progressive and inclusive policies that allow all girls to serve their communities and learn important life skills,” said TYFA Board President Shannon Garcia. “We are proud to help Bobby and these young girls actualize their hopes and dreams.”

“TYFA has a long history of supporting transgender youth and families,” said TYFA Executive Director Kim Pearson. “We are standing with Bobby and her family to make sure that she, like many young girls across the country, has the opportunity to take full advantage of the wonderful life lessons the Girls Scouts provide.”

Any donations made online will go toward cookies that will be distributed to their hometown charity, Mount Saint Vincent Home, which has assisted more than 18,000 abused and neglected Colorado children since 1883. Proceeds will also go to Boots on the Ground, which distributes Girl Scout Cookies to active-duty military servicemembers.

Since taking office, President Obama and his Administration have taken many steps to ensure that all students are safe and healthy and can learn in environments free from discrimination, bullying and harassment.

Bullying is an epidemic that has gone ignored for too long, and far too many of our young people are targeted and harassed based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. But across the country, Gay-Straight Alliances and other similar student groups are taking important steps to address these issues.

Last year, President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and others welcomed students, parents, and teachers in addition to non-profit leaders, advocates, and policymakers to the White House for aConference on Bullying Prevention. Also last year, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan wrote a“Dear Colleague” letter to school districts across the country in support of Gay-Straight Alliances. And today, on the occasion of thefirst-ever National Gay-Straight Alliance Day, Secretary Duncan has taped a video message to students, teachers, and allies to re-emphasize the Obama Administration’s commitment to safe schools for all students.

The following is a transcript of Secretary Duncan’s message:

On the first-ever National Gay-Straight Alliance Day, I want to say thank you to all of the student leaders and faculty advisors who are doing the courageous work of making campuses safe places that are free of bullying and harassment.

Harassment and bullying are serious problems at schools and colleges, especially for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. We have to dispel the myth that bullying is just a normal rite of passage, or an inevitable part of growing up.

President Obama and I believe that we have a collective obligation to ensure that all our schools are safe for all children. Every single student deserves the opportunity to learn and grow and achieve their potential, without having to worry about the threat of harassment.

When students are harassed or bullied, it directly affects their work in the classroom, their aspirations for the future, and their desire to stay in school.

Gay-Straight Alliances and similar student groups play an important role in creating welcoming, affirming, and respectful schools and colleges – safe places where learning can happen and students flourish.

This work is absolutely essential.

GSAs are a proven tool for creating welcoming school climates and helping students stay in school.

Our team at the Department of Education is committed to giving school districts guidance on providing all students, including LGBT, gender nonconforming students, and their allies, a safe place to learn, meet, share experiences, and discuss matters that are important to them. These are goals that our Administration takes very seriously.

This day is an opportunity to recognize the importance of Gay-Straight Alliances in schools across America. On behalf of President Obama, I want to thank you for your hard work, your leadership, and your courage. Your work makes a difference – so keep it up.

Italy's Gay Village Party to Debut at Winter Party Festival

There’s no fiddling around at Winter Party Festival when Italy’s biggest, award-winning event, Gay Village, presents “Boiling Point: Rome is Burning,” Sunday, March 4, beginning at 10 p.m. For the first time ever, Winter Party will partner with Gay Village to bring this world-renowned party to Cameo Nightclub, turning it into an orgy of sights, sounds and sensational décor, complete with sexy Italian dancers in gladiator garb flown in just for this event. Independents are open to out candidates, poll indicates

Virgina bill would ban anti-gay discrimination by adoption agencies

The Virginia Assembly is considering a measure that would prohibit state-funded adoption agencies from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, among other factors. The bill seeks to reverse regulations recently finalized by the state's Board of Social Services that would remove discrimination protections.

"Adoption is a publicact that goes through state courts, and no government agent should engage in discrimination," said outstate Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, the sponsor of the bill.

The state House has lined up majority support for the bill and Gov. Chris Gregoire has said she would sign the bill into law. If the bill passes, opponents are expected to challenge it with a referendum.

Romney’s Tax Returns Reveal Donations to Anti-LGBT Groups

The tax returns for Mitt Romney's charitable foundation reveal that the GOP presidential hopeful has given at least $35,000 in recent years to groups actively working to halt the spread of LGBT equality and, in some cases, intentionally demonize LGBT people. The revelation comes two weeks after Romney said in New Hampshire that he opposed discrimination against LGBT Americans. But according to CNN, Romney donated to the extremist group Massachusetts Family Institute, as well as the Becket Fund. The Massachusetts Family Institute received $10,000 from Romney in 2006, while the Beckett Fund received $25,000 in 2009. The donations came from the Tyler Charitable Foundation, set up and funded by the Romneys.

“This is just another example of Mitt Romney saying one thing while doing the complete opposite. It’s crystal clear that while Governor Romney claims to oppose discrimination, he is beholden to groups who make it their mission to vilify LGBT people,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “Romney’s financial support of extremist groups is indicative of a politician with rising national ambitions who knew he had to cozy up to those on the far-right in order to secure his party’s nomination.”

The Massachusetts Family Institute has long been a vocal opponent of marriage equality, and believes sexual orientation is a choice that can be cured. From their website: “Our compassion is for those struggling with same-sex attraction and we encourage the healing of individuals who wish to change their choice of lifestyle…”

The group also is ruthless in its dedication to distorting programs intended to reduce bullying and make schools safer, more welcoming environments for all students. It says gay-straight alliances may violate the Constitution and parental rights, and says associated programming pushes a radical, pro-homosexual agenda. The organization has said HRC’s Welcoming Schools initiative isn’t actually about addressing and preventing dangerous bullying, but instead is aimed at teaching “children at the youngest ages about homosexual relationships and same-sex parenting.”

Romney also gave a significant sum of money to the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which describes itself as a nonprofit, nonpartisan, interfaith group dedicated to protecting the expression of religious traditions. The group is vehemently anti-marriage equality, and has argued that allowing committed same-sex couples to marry would trigger a wave of litigation for religious organizations objecting to performing or recognizing such ceremonies in states across the nation. The organization also compared pro-equality demonstrations during the time when Proposition 8 was a hot-button issue in California to the actions of the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.

Arkansas newspaper is acting like a jerk

The Human Rights Campaign is joining with the Center for Equality in Arkansas and calling on the Northwest Arkansas Times to drop their discriminatory policy of refusing to run the engagement and wedding announcements of same-sex couples. Recently, the paper rejected an announcement submitted by Cody Renegar and Thomas Staed.

The newspaper says it will only publish the announcements of couples who can legally wed. Arkansas law does not permit loving, committed same-sex couples to marry.

“We see archaic policies like this in newspapers across the country, and it’s a reminder of how discrimination against LGBT people can truly impact every aspect of our lives,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “It’s unfortunate enough that the Arkansas government refuses to recognize the relationships of all LGBT Arkansans as legitimate, but it’s insulting that a local newspaper won’t publish a simple wedding announcement. The Northwest Arkansas Times needs to get with the times and update their policies.”

“LGBT Arkansans face discrimination nearly every day – in their communities, places of worship, and their workplaces,” said Jason Rogers with the Center for Equality. “Same-sex couples can and do marry in places across the country with the identical goal of straight couples – building a future together and making a lifelong commitment to the person they love most. Updating their policy to reflect this would send a strong message that Arkansas is indeed home to a vibrant LGBT community, and its members shouldn’t ever be made to feel less worthy of the same dignity and rights everyone else receives.”

Ski Report: Welcome the Winter Deluge

Several substantial snow storms rolled through Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) recently, leaving resorts with fresh snow measurable in feet. The most recent storm occurred over the weekend and brought nearly three feet of snow to Silverton Mountain in Southwest Colorado.

The weekend storm was spread across the state and gave all 22 CSCUSA member resorts a welcome layer of fresh powder. Both Loveland Ski Area and Crested Butte Mountain Resort benefited from almost two feet of new snow; Telluride 20 inches of snow, and Copper, Steamboat and Sunlight enjoyed roughly a foot-and-a-half of fresh snow.

A little more than two feet blanketed Arapahoe Basin, Aspen/Snowmass and Eldora, while Ski

Cooper and Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort were just shy of two feet. About a foot powder fell at Monarch and Powderhorn, and a solid 10 inches came down at Winter Park.

Wolf Creek received eight inches of new snow from the storm, SolVista Basin received six inches and Echo Mountain benefited with four inches. Howelsen Hill was reporting three inches of new snow from the most recent weather system.

Guests to CSCUSA resorts have been cashing in on the winter wealth Colorado has received this month by racking up numerous powder days. More new snow is expected later this week. In the meantime, skiers and snowboarders continue to take advantage of Learn to Ski and Snowboard specials being offered by resorts during the month of January.

In an effort to save time and money a lot of companies are now turning to video-chat software to interview job candidates. Like everything else, practice makes perfect. Getting past camera shyness and not speaking face to face can be a challenge but here are some tips on how you should handle a Skype interview.

Look into the camera, not at your screen
This takes practice. Natural instinct is to look at the screen but by not looking into the camera if gives the impression that you are not making eye contact with the interviewer.

Get rid of interruptions and distractions
Since you will be probably doing your interview from the comfort of your home, be aware of interruptions. As with an in-person interview, turn off your cell phone, make sure you dog is not barking in the background, make sure loud music is not playing in the next room, and be sure to let roommates or family members know that you are conducting an interview so they don’t barge in on you.

Background Check
Your background surroundings can say a lot about you. If possible shoot your camera against a blank wall, and make sure you clear off your desk. Remove clutter, coffee cups etc.

Dress for Success
Treat this like an in-person interview. Be professional, properly groomed, clean and simple. Do not take the risk of putting on a shirt and tie and wearing shorts or pajama bottoms and thinking the camera won't see it. Too many things can go wrong!

Conduct a Mock Interview
Ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview via Skype and record it. This gives you the opportunity to get comfortable with the technology, to check your connections and camera, and also allows you to see how you look and sound on camera. Another idea is to practice in front of a mirror as this not only helps you with the content of your message but will familiarize you with how you sound and how you look.

Get to know proper Web Cam Etiquette
You do not want to sit too close to the camera. However, you do want to lean in and sit forward. This will allow interviewers to clearly read your facial expressions. Again, look at the camera, and not the screen. Put your hands where you can see them so the interviewer can read your body language and other non-verbal cues. Add extra enthusiasm and keep your answers clear, concise and to the point.

More than 75 U.S. mayors have joined a project to build public support for marriage rights for same-sex couples. The effort, organized by Freedom to Marry, kicked off with a press conference last Friday in Washington, D.C., with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, among others, attending.

Colorado ski season off to a slow start

Colorado Ski Country USA’s (CSCUSA) 22 member resorts reported a decrease in skier visitation for the beginning of the 2011/12 ski season. Skier visits at CSCUSA resorts were off by 10.65 percent during the first period of the ski season, defined as opening day of the season through December 31, 2011, compared to the same period last year.

CSCUSA President and CEO Melanie Mills sites variable snow conditions as a contributing factor. “We had a promising start in October with several robust storms giving resorts a solid base and allowing some to open earlier than planned,” explained Mills. “But we faced inconsistencies in weather patterns for most of November and December, leading to slower visitation especially by in-state skiers at some ski areas.”

There is a lot of skiable terrain available. Combined, CSCUSA’s 22 members have about 80 percent of their lifts open, servicing approximately 17,609 acres of terrain with several resorts 100 percent open or very close. “Skiers and snowboarders are taking advantage of the beautiful weather, being outside, enjoying the terrain that is open and having fun with friends and family,” said Mills.

Colorado is at an advantage for managing snow. “Resorts have been able to maintain the big snows we received early on, thanks to Colorado’s higher elevations and colder temperatures. This also allows resorts to make snow where needed,” continued Mills. “Investments in state-of-the-art snow making and grooming equipment, along with the best snow maintenance experts in the industry give our resorts an advantage in providing a quality product which skiers have come to expect in Colorado.”

Resorts were busy over the holidays. During Christmas and New Year’s, travelers visited Colorado resorts and diversified their ski vacations with other attractions resorts offer. “Colorado is known for our world class resorts, and part of the reason is the wide range of off-snow and non-skiing activities they offer guests,” continued Mills.

The ski season in Colorado is long, with the state’s snowiest months still ahead. “When comparing this year to last year, remember that last season was exceptional, with several of our resorts breaking the 500 inch mark for snowfall, and we were skiing until the 4^th of July,” explained Mills. “In our weather-dependent business, we feast in the big snow years and suffer a bit when it’s dry. But we’ve got lots of the season still ahead including a bonus leap year ski day on February 29.”

Planned Parenthood Applauds HHS for Ensuring Access to Affordable Birth Control

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains applauds the decision by the United States Department of Health and Human Services to ensure access to affordable birth control, and not further expand the refusal provision to the birth control coverage benefit under the Affordable Care Act.

This decision is grounded in sound medical science and health policy and protects access to affordable birth control for millions of women, including women who are employed by a religiously affiliated hospital, university, or other religiously affiliated organization that serves the broader public.

“Birth control is not just basic health care for women, it is an economic concern,” said PPRM CEO and President Vicki Cowart. “This common sense decision means that millions of women, who would otherwise pay $15 to $50 a month, will have access to affordable birth control, helping them save hundreds of dollars each year.”

In July 2011, the respected, nonpartisan Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended birth control be covered as a women’s preventive service because it is fundamental to improving women’s health and the health of their families. Increased access to birth control is directly linked to declines in maternal and infant mortality, as well as other health benefits and positive health outcomes. Among other things, birth control can protect women against debilitating symptoms of endometriosis and can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.

“Doctors and public health experts agree that increased access to birth control is not only one of the best ways to prevent unintended pregnancies, it also improves health outcomes for women and their families,” said Cowart.

In August 2011, HHS adopted the IOM’s recommendation, paving the way for one of the greatest advancements for women’s health in decades. The women’s preventive service benefit will take effect in August 2012 and requires that a range of preventive health care services be covered by insurance companies with no additional co-pays.

This birth control coverage benefit underscores the fact that birth control use is nearly universal in the United States, even among Catholic women. According to Guttmacher, 99 percent of all sexually experienced women and 98 percent of sexually experienced Catholic women will have used birth control at some point in their lives.

In fact, according to NPR, many religiously affiliated hospitals and universities currently provide birth control coverage to their employees.

The birth control coverage benefit is also one of the most popular provisions in the Affordable Care Act, even among Catholics, whose bishops oppose birth control. According to a Hart Research poll, 71 percent of American voters, including 77 percent of Catholic women voters, support the benefit that health plans cover prescription birth control at no cost. And a May 2011 Thomson Reuters-NPR Health poll found that 77 percent of Americans believe that private medical insurance should provide no-cost birth control.

Planned Parenthood believes all women, regardless of their employer, should be able to access the birth control coverage benefit. That’s why Planned Parenthood opposes the current provision that allows religious employers like churches and church associations to deny this important and economically valuable benefit to their employees. Planned Parenthood also disagrees with adding the one year waiver provision to the final rule.

Planned Parenthood respects religious freedom and believes that neither government nor employers should intrude on individuals’ ability to practice their own religion or faith, including their personal decisions about health care.

Every year I make the same resolutions and every year I make no progress. Literally, ever year for the past six years I have wanted to 1. Go back to school 2. Manage my finances better 3. Lose 20 pounds 4. Get into a LTR. I have tried many different methods of accomplishing these goals but with no luck. My question is, should I continue to look for alternative methods to accomplish these goals or should I take the hint and look for new goals. Thank you for your advice.

Dear Stuck,

First of all, you need to examine the way you are doing things, and figure out what works best for you. Remember, you are in charge of your own happiness. This year offers a new opportunity for you to release the past six-years. Reinvent your own ideology, if you will, and take on the reality of your choosing. Remember, thought creates.

Resolutions are a great way of keeping track of your short and long-term goals but don’t lose track of the bigger picture –your happiness. Pace yourself and work at your own speed. Online classes are a good way of continuing your education without imposing as much on your lifestyle and finances, in essence you can go back to school from the comfort of your own bed or local coffee shop. If you are pursuing an undergraduate degree, there are many colleges offering grants and scholarships (fastweb.com) for whatever your educational endeavors may be.

Managing your finances shouldn’t be a problem as long as you honor yourself; don’t over-spend and lead a lifestyle in which you spend more than you have. Enjoy meals at home and, instead, of going out with friends, host a potluck dinner party – they’re always a smash! If you enjoy the public-social-scene-atmosphere, you can find many budget-friendly alternatives to satisfy your needs. Above all, do not squander your money, respect it and it will respect you; be wise and responsible in your choices and you will succeed in all you do.

Regarding your desire to lose twenty-pounds, you MUST be mindful of what you eat. What are your eating habits? Try keeping a daily log of what you consume and see what you can do differently. You can also read 'The Abs Diet' by David Zinczenko, this book offers work-out exercises and outlines the importance of nourishment and exercise. Avoid fast-foods, greasy foods such as bacon, sausage, lard or anything processed; eliminate sodas (look up on YouTube what it does to your system and educate yourself in your own best interests). Read your labels and ingredients. Do not sabotage yourself for an easy and quick indulgence. Microwaves may be fast and convenient but they do more harm than benefit. Cook for yourself as you would your partner.

If you cannot honor yourself, you are not able to fully give and honor someone else, as cliché as it is, know the truth in these words.

Make sure you are also in a stress-free and positive environment. If you truly release yourself from what is really holding you back (emotionally or psychologically), you will easily lose the extra weight that you want to release. Be a better you for you and no one else but you, however, keep in mind those around you and do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

In order to have a long term relationship that lasts, you must know that it takes two to fully burn bright. Know that having a relationship is an addition to your reality and not a rescue mission. There is nothing wrong with finally wanting to settle down and be in a relationship, but you must make sure you have your own stability before you can expect someone to take any form of relationship seriously. When your heart speaks, listen to it and it will guide you to your twin-flame. Think of it this way: you already are in a relationship, he’s just on vacation waiting for you to get ready and join him. Love yourself as you would him and you will meet him faster than you know. Remember to honor yourself throughout the courting process and the one you are meant to be with will be a reflection of you.

There’s a quote from 'Sex and the City' I would like to share with you. If you allow it to resonate within you, I find it can be most helpful:

“There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous."

In essence, if the old routines were not working for you, try doing something new and effective that you will enjoy more than you previously did. I wish you the best of luck and I am cheering for you. Just remember to think with your heart before you start.

Thirty-nine years ago the highest court in the land recognized that women and families, not politicians, should have the right to make their own medical decisions without government interference in the landmark case of Roe v. Wade.

Prior to the January 1973 ruling, over 1,000 women died each year in the United States as a result of illegal abortion. But since that date, anti-choice lawmakers have worked to roll back the ruling on Roe v. Wade. This, despite the fact that polling consistently shows that a majority of Americans support Roe and respect the decisions individual women make about their own reproductive health and pregnancy.

In 2011, anti-choice politicians across the country did just about everything in their power to undermine Roe and restrict access to safe and legal abortion care along with access to family planning and Planned Parenthood health centers.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2011, state legislatures passed more than triple the number of abortion restrictions than in 2010 — the highest ever. Twenty-four states enacted 92 new abortion restrictions in 2011, shattering the previous record of 34 adopted in 2005.

“The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision made a crucial difference in the lives and health of American women and their families,” said Vicki Cowart, PPRM CEO and president. “But 39 years later, we are expecting 2012 to be a year of extremes as lawmakers and anti-choice groups use women’s health as a diversion from the real problems facing Americans. Already Personhood Colorado has announced it will attempt for a third time to get a ‘personhood’ amendment on the 2012 ballot.”

If passed, ‘personhood’ could result in outlawing birth control, in vitro fertilization, and abortion, even in the case of rape or incest, effectively rolling back privacy rights gained as a result of Roe v. Wade. In 2012, Planned Parenthood is drawing a line in the sand and using every tool at our disposal to motivate supporters to defend against the overreach of anti-women’s health legislators.

To help show how far access to reproductive rights have come since the early 20^th century, and how far back we still have to go, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains is releasing a video entitled “Don’t Rewind Roe” to mark the anniversary of the landmark case.

With grassroots supporters in every state, Planned Parenthood is working aggressively in 2012 to defeat legislation that threatens to take away women’s health care and coverage.

Washington United for Marriage on Support of Major Employers for Marriage Equality

Washington United for Marriage, a broad statewide coalition of organizations, congregations, unions and business associations that will work to obtain civil marriage for lesbian and gay couples in Washington State in 2012, today cheered the announcement of some of the Northwest’s top employers as they made their support for marriage equality public. The bills, SB6239 and HB2516 will be heard in senate and house committees on Monday, January 23^rd.

At this time, six states plus the District of Columbia recognize marriage for same-sex couples under state law: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. Nine states—California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington—provide same-sex couples with access to the state level benefits and responsibilities of marriage, through either civil unions or domestic partnerships. Same-sex couples do not receive federal rights and benefits in any state.

HRC Calls on Washington Adventist Hospital to Review Visitation Policies

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today calls on Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland, to review its policies and practices related to hospital visitation. On November 13, 2011, Kathryn Wilderotter was admitted to the hospital following a car accident. When Linda Cole, her legal spouse and partner of 11 years, arrived, she was reportedly not recognized as a family member and denied the right to visit Kathryn. Such a denial would violate federal hospital visitation regulations and Maryland law.

“Discrimination during a medical emergency may be one of the worst forms of discrimination LGBT people face,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “Recognizing this problem, federal regulations were put in place to end discrimination in healthcare settings and allow all people to be with their loved ones during their most critical moments.”

In January of last year, federal regulations regarding patients’ hospital visitation rights went into effect. The regulations require all hospitals participating in Medicaid and Medicare programs – virtually every hospital in the country – to permit patients to designate visitors of their choosing and prohibit discrimination in visitation based on a number of factors, including sexual orientation and gender identity.

Washington Adventist Hospital was a non-responder in HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), an annual survey of healthcare policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients and their families. The HEI can serve as an organizational assessment tool by assisting hospitals in modifying their policies, and can help hospitals comply with The Joint Commission standards addressing non-discrimination, as well as new HHS regulations on visitation. The couple has filed a complaint about the incident with The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

American Astronomical Society celebrates lifetime achievements of Dr. Frank Kameny

At its 219th semiannual meeting last week in Austin, Texas, the American Astronomical Society (AAS) presented a certificate of appreciation commemorating Dr. Frank Kameny's lifetime efforts to secure equal employment rights for all. In 1957 Dr. Kameny, a Ph.D. astronomer and member of the AAS, was unjustly fired from his position with the U.S. government because he was gay. His subsequent efforts to advance the cause of gay rights included organizing some of the first public protests for homosexual rights in America, running as the first openly gay candidate for Congress, and writing the first petition to the Supreme Court to argue that discrimination based on sexual orientation violates constitutional civil-rights protections.

Dr. Kameny's achievements included a successful campaign to remove homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association's Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973 and the repeal of the District of Columbia's law regulating private sexual matters between consenting adults. Dr. Kameny's efforts on the national level to promote diversity and equality for all are in alignment with the mission of the AAS to promote diversity and equality within its membership and have enabled many AAS members to pursue their calling without the fear of the professional discrimination due to sexual orientation that Dr. Kameny suffered.

In 2009 the federal government issued a formal apology to Dr. Kameny for his firing solely on the basis of sexual orientation. Sadly, Dr. Kameny died in October 2011, before the AAS could honor him in person. At the Austin meeting Mr. Charles Francis, cofounder of the Kameny Papers Project, accepted the certificate of appreciation from AAS president Dr. Debra M. Elmegreen (Vassar College). Mr. Francis and fellow co-founder Mr. Bob Witeck organized Dr. Kameny's papers for incorporation into the U.S. Library of Congress.

The following wording appears on the certificate:

"The American Astronomical Society, in light of its commitment to diversity and equality, hereby honors the memory of the astronomer Dr. Franklin Edward Kameny for his exemplary lifelong commitment to promoting equal rights for homosexual men and women. Dr. Kameny's activism removed discriminatory barriers that had cut short many careers. Dr. Kameny tirelessly advocated against policies that banned gays from working for the federal government, holding security clearances, or serving openly in the military."

"The presentation was an emotionally charged moment for our community," says Elmegreen. "By honoring Dr. Kameny, the AAS has helped to right a previous national wrong." In addition, the AAS recently established the Working Group on LGBTIQ Equality to promote equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and questioning individuals within the profession.

For me, the aging process has led to a clearer view of equality. After all, it has been the passion of my life for 42 years. Everywhere I travel, I’m in search of how our community is depicted. Unfortunately, I notice we are not always included. That is discrimination by censorship. And unfortunately, many of our national organizations get a failing grade on this subject. They don’t understand the seriousness of this censorship. Even GLAAD doesn’t know the history of the battle to end censorship in mainstream media. They must learn that our collective history is the building blocks for our future, and the justification of why our struggle for equality deserves to become a reality.

About two months ago, my nephew and I visited the new National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. The museum opened a little over a year ago with much fanfare. It was a spectacular debut with the likes of Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Steven Spielberg and Jerry Seinfeld. The museum not only covered the plight of the Jews in coming to the States, it showcased their religious and political views. It also highlights 12 people from the Jewish community who represent who Jews are and their contributions to American society.

It’s a shock and a failure on the part of the museum that we gay Jews do not exist. A total failure, and they should bow their heads in shame. That’s a tough statement, but as I went through the museum and saw how Jews dealt with the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the fight for civil rights and women’s rights, it was obvious that something was missing. LGBT. In fact, I didn’t find those four letters anywhere in the museum.

Here’s the rub. Many of the most prominent pioneers of the LGBT community were Jewish; perhaps the most well known, Harvey Milk, does not even get a mention. In fact, in what might look like a backhanded insult to the LGBT community, there are two gay men in the museum’s Hall of Fame gallery — Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein — who are both closeted thanks to the museum, as neither of their displayed bios mentions it.

Not only is this discrimination by censorship, it reminds me of a time when, in the Jewish tradition, if you discovered something about a member of the family that was shameful, you didn’t talk about it. Does the museum find LGBT shameful? This becomes somewhat personal for me since, in my family, one of my cousins was one of “those individuals.” At the tender age of 16, my cousin Norman was asked to leave his home. As a child on the streets in the 1950s, he was homeless and had a life of drugs and alcohol. And growing up, we children occasionally heard his name and asked about him. We were told we don’t talk about cousin Norman. Imagine growing up, knowing you’re gay, and discovering the real story of cousin Norman. How do you tell your parents? Do you worry about what the rest of the family will think? Does it sound like the 1950s? That is what the NMAJH has done. On behalf of my cousin Norman, shame on you!

Better Health and Well-Being: Making Improvements for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Americans

President Obama has demonstrated that his vision for a brighter future includes greater equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. The President and his Administration are dedicated to eliminating barriers to equality, fighting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and engaging LGBT communities across the country.

As part of the Obama Administration’s commitment, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) continues to engage in a concerted effort to improve the health and well-being of all Americans, including LGBT Americans. Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has led these efforts to promote equal treatment of LGBT Americans, provide enhanced resources for LGBT health issues, and develop better information regarding LGBT health needs.

To ensure the consideration of LGBT concerns throughout HHS's activities, Secretary Sebelius established a committee of senior representatives from each division of HHS. This committee coordinates LGBT-related policies across the department and recommends future action that HHS can take to improve the health and well-being of LGBT communities.

These efforts stemmed from President Obama’s Memorandum on Hospital Visitation, which, in addition to addressing the rights of hospital patients to designate visitors regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, directed Secretary Sebelius to explore additional steps HHS could take to improve the lives of LGBT people and their families.

The Affordable Care Act
The Affordable Care Act is greatly improving access to health coverage for LGBT Americans. Studies have shown that health disparities related to sexual orientation and gender identity are due in part to lower rates of health coverage. The Affordable Care Act will give all Americans, including LGBT Americans, improved access to health coverage through an expanded, stronger Medicaid program and new Affordable Insurance Exchanges, marketplaces for quality, affordable health insurance. Moreover, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies will no longer be able to deny individuals coverage or charge them more based on pre-existing conditions – meaning that all Americans will have the security of knowing that they can access affordable, quality health coverage even if they lose their jobs, switch jobs, move, or become sick.

Other notable parts in the Affordable Care Act that will benefit LGBT Americans – like all Americans – are the provisions that permit individuals to remain on their parents’ health plans until age 26 and enhance the availability of preventive services for women in new health plans and seniors on Medicare.

As the Affordable Care Act is implemented, HHS has taken significant steps to help improve the health and well-being of LGBT Americans.

Equal Rights for LGBT Americans

In the past, many same-sex domestic partners were denied the ability to visit their loved ones in the hospital. At the direction of President Obama, HHS has taken action to ensure equal rights for LGBT Americans to visit their partners in the hospital. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued new rules in November 2010 for hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid that require them to respect the right of all patients to choose who may visit them when they are hospitalized.

In September 2011, at the same time that CMS stepped up enforcement of hospital visitation rights, it also clarified that same-sex couples have the same rights as other couples in terms of naming a representative who can make medical decisions on a patient’s behalf. Existing rules protect the rights of hospital patients to have representatives who can act on their behalf. HHS has updated the guidance explaining these rules to make it easier for family members, including same-sex partners, to make informed care decisions for loved ones who have become incapacitated.

CMS has also issued guidance to states making clear that same-sex partners may be afforded treatment comparable to other spouses when it comes to receiving long-term care, such as care in a nursing home, under Medicaid. Federal law protects assets, such as a couple’s home, in the event that a married individual must receive nursing home care through Medicaid. In June 2011, CMS clarified that states have the flexibility to extend this protection to same-sex partners.

Secretary Sebelius has also strengthened internal policies at HHS to help ensure that LGBT individuals have equal access to HHS programs and employment opportunities. In April 2011 the Secretary issued a new policy explicitly requiring employees to serve all individuals eligible for HHS programs without regard to non-merit factors, including sexual orientation and gender identity. In addition, in March of 2011, the Secretary updated and clarified HHS’s equal employment policy – which already protected against unfair treatment based on a person’s sexual orientation – to also include gender identity and genetic information.
Stronger Resources to Improve LGBT Health and Well-Being

HHS has taken many steps to strengthen the health resources available to LGBT Americans over the first three years of the Obama Administration.

In 2010, HHS established the nation’s first national resource center for older LGBT individuals. This center, funded by the Administration on Aging (AoA), supports communities across the country as they aim to serve the estimated 1.5 to 4 million LGBT individuals who are 60 and older. The center provides information, assistance and resources for both aging services, LGBT organizations, and providers at the state and community level to assist them in the development and provision of culturally sensitive supports and services.

In July 2010, President Obama and Secretary Sebelius announced the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, a rigorous effort to increase access to care and lower the number of new HIV cases in the United States by 25 percent within the next five years. The strategy seeks to reduce HIV-related health disparities with a specific focus on high-risk populations, including certain LGBT populations.

In September 2010, HHS announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) allocated $30 million in new resources to support the National HIV/AIDS strategy. These funds, made available by the Affordable Care Act, are providing a boost to states and communities as they focus HIV prevention on high-risk populations. The funds are also helping fill critical gaps in data, knowledge, and understanding of the epidemic.

In September 2010, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced $42.6 million in new grants over a three-year period to provide behavioral health services in communities most impacted by HIV/AIDS. Funding for the “12 Cities” program will be used to develop and expand networks of primary care, HIV/AIDS and behavioral health service providers serving racial and ethnic minorities, including LGBT individuals, with or at high risk for HIV/AIDS.

In October 2010, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) announced a $13.3 million grant to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center over five years to help address barriers to permanency and well-being for LGBT foster youth, who are disproportionately represented in the foster care population. This is one of the largest federal grants to an organization that primarily serves LGBT communities.

In March 2011, HHS launched a new website – www.StopBullying.gov – which contains a dedicated section for LGBT youth. The site includes specific resources and assistance for LGBT youth, including examples of community groups that offer support and options to seek counseling. Secretary Sebelius also taped an “It Gets Better” video to address LGBT youth who have been bullied and are at risk of depression and suicide.

In June 2011, ACF announced the creation of a resource center to support resettlement of LGBT refugees who have faced persecution and discrimination in their home countries. The new center will provide resources to resettlement workers who are helping refugees assimilate in America in key locations, and provide training to staff on issues and needs specific to LGBT refugees.

In September 2011, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded $248,000 to create a National Training and Technical Assistance Center to help community health centers (CHCs) provide improved care for LGBT patients. The center will work in consultation with CHCs across the country – providing training for doctors, nurses, and other employees and developing health information resources specifically for LGBT patients. Additionally, SAMHSA is disseminating training curricula to help providers more effectively provide behavioral health services to LGBT Americans, in particular members of racial and ethnic minority populations.
Better Information on LGBT Health Needs

In June 2011, Secretary Sebelius announced HHS’ plans to greatly enhance the collection of health data on LGBT populations. Gathering data on LGBT individuals will help researchers, policy makers, health care providers, and advocates identify and address health disparities affecting the LGBT population.

Additionally, in March 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report commissioned by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the state of research and science regarding the health needs of LGBT people. The report provides the scientific community with the first comprehensive overview of health-related research on LGBT health issues – an important step in identifying research gaps and opportunities. To address the IOM’s recommendations, NIH formed an internal committee to review the report and determine how NIH can strengthen LGBT health research, and include LGBT Americans in clinical studies.

In October 2011, HRSA released Women’s Health USA 2011, the tenth edition of an annual data book identifying priorities, trends and disparities in women’s health. For the first time, this report features data on the health of lesbian and bisexual women. Among other things, the report found that health disparities exist by sexual orientation. Every ten years, HHS develops national, science-based objectives for promoting health and preventing disease for the following decade. In 2010, as part of this initiative – “Healthy People 2020” – for the first time, a formal workgroup was established to examine scientific literature on LGBT health. The workgroup will propose objectives regarding LGBT health as part of this comprehensive initiative.

What's going on with Out Front Colorado?

Out Front Colorado was the topic of more than a few conversations that took place over the weekend wondering what was happening with the historic publication.

Out Front Colorado's blog and Facebook pages haven't been updated since January 2 and January 5, respectively, at the time of this posting.

Issues of the newspaper are very difficult to find. MileHighGayGuy's Drew Wilson stopped in to 10 of the paper's regular distribution sites and not one of them had so much as a single issue available. One of the sites went so far as to say they "couldn't remember" the last time Out Front Colorado had been delivered there.

Lynette Elliot, longtime Sales Manager who was announced as the new Associate Publisher of Out Front Colorado in the November 2, 2011 edition of the paper, could not be reached for comment, but her voicemail states that she is no longer employed with the company.

Out Front Colorado's phone number is still in service, though, with outdated information, as it still names Elliot as an employee. Publisher and Art Director Jay Klein has not returned calls for comment at the time of this posting.

The former House Speakerand current minority leader took her office in 1987 less than two weeks afterthen-President Ronald Reagan finally uttered the acronym “AIDS,”and she’s been a non-stop advocate ever since. For The Advocate’sFebruary 2012 cover story, Pelosi spoke with Washington Correspondent Andrew Harmon about her career, her peers,and her dedication to LGBT equality.

Harmon caught up with Rep. Pelosi as she was headed to a New York City fundraiser,one of 367 Pelosi headlined since the House Democrats again became theminority. Hosted by Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes and his fiancé SeanEldridge for gay and lesbian Democratic donors, Pelosi borrowed from TedOlson’s closing arguments during the Proposition 8 trial, “All ofus are carrying the baton of freedom as we fight this fight for freedom tomarry. And all of you who are working on this are making America more American.”“It’s all about time,” Pelosi continued, “and to thosewho mock me on this subject, I say to them ‘The inconceivable to you isthe inevitable to us.’”

Pelosi also has harsh words for those spouting a raft ofrhetoric during the Republican Presidential primary campaign, includinganti-gay marriage pledges and “strengthening the family,” talkingpoints Pelosi says are the real window into the soul of the GOP.“It’s pretty self-evident. This is who they are,” she says ofthe Republicans. “Are they so bankrupt of ideas that they have to continuethe DOMA cases?”

And it’s the criticisms of retiring gay CongressmanBarney Frank (D-Mass.) from gay Republicans that especially sets her off.“Oh, but what about them?”she snaps. “He chooses a party that supports his values. They’vechosen a party that supports their income…a party that denigrates themand treats them with disrespect.”

When it comes to her boss, President Obama, Pelosi usuallyis in lockstep. Asked about his marriage equality stance, however, she declinesto comment on what conversations she may have had with Obama. But she’spushing the Democratic National Committee to help fund the fight againstanti-marriage equality ballot measures across the country. “There aremore ways to get your voice heard than just speaking…. But I hope thepresident would just say he supports equality in marriage,” she says.

Washington United for Marriage on the Introduction of Marriage Equality in the Legislature

Washington United for Marriage, a broad statewide coalition of organizations, congregations, unions and business associations that will work to obtain civil marriage for lesbian and gay couples in Washington State in 2012, today applauded the introduction of SB 6239, an act relating to providing equal protection for all families in Washington by creating equality in civil marriage and changing the domestic partnership laws, while protecting religious freedom. The bill needs 25 votes in the senate for passage and was introduced with 23 sponsors.

“Today we take the next step towards making the promise of equality a reality in Washington State,” said Zach Silk, Campaign Manager for Washington United for Marriage. “The introduction of this bill not only recognizes the value that lesbian and gay families in Washington make to our united community, but also upholds the longstanding tradition of the separation of church and state in this country. Marriage is about dignity, commitment, love and respect – it is the ultimate expression of a pro-family society. The foundation of marriage helps us build stable families, and now is the time to recognize the importance of treating all families in Washington State equally.”

At this time, six states plus the District of Columbia recognize marriage for same-sex couples under state law: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. Nine states—California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington—provide same-sex couples with access to the state level benefits and responsibilities of marriage, through either civil unions or domestic partnerships. Same-sex couples do not receive federal rights and benefits in any state.

ABC Cancels "Work It" After Two Episodes

On Friday, ABC announced that the series “Work It” has been cancelled after two episodes. GLAAD and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organizations including the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) had spoken out against the series for its potential to cause harm to transgender people. The series debuted on January 3, 2012 to low ratings, and, according to Entertainment Weekly, dropped another 20 percent this week.

“While many of ABC’s positive and groundbreaking portrayals of LGBT people have been critical and popular successes, the public had little interest in this outdated show,” said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs and Communications at GLAAD. “As a result of this campaign, an important dialogue has been started in Hollywood and mainstream media about the real discrimination faced by transgender people today.”

Last month, after viewing the pilot, GLAAD placed a full page ad in media industry publication Variety with HRC. The organizations also published a joint opinion piece on the Huffington Post. The Variety ad noted that “by encouraging the audience to laugh at the characters’ attempts at womanhood, the show gives license to similar treatment of transgender women.”

GLAAD and HRC included photos of transgender Americans, legal facts and statistics from a recent report from the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force on the discrimination that transgender Americans face:

• Transgender Americans can be legally fired in 34 states today simply for being who they are.
• 97% of self-identified transgender people reported being harassed or abused at work.
• 26% reported losing their jobs because they are transgender.

GLAAD stated on its site that while the show did not explicitly address transgender people, many viewers unfamiliar with the realities of being transgender will still make the connection.

Previously the San Francisco LGBT Community Center, transgender writers including Autumn Sandeen of Pam’s House Blend, the Transgender Economic Empowerment Initiative and the Transgender Law Center spoke out against the show’s promos. Women’s advocacy groups and members of the Puerto Rican community have also criticized the show’s premise and jokes.

According to ABC, ‘Work It’ centered on two unemployed men who have "learned the hard way that the current recession is more of a 'man-cession' and their skills aren't in high demand." One finds out that a pharmaceuticals company is hiring sales reps, but only female sales reps. He goes to the interview dressed in heels, a skirt, and makeup and gets hired as a woman.

If you sneezed last week, you might have missed them. Two major changes in the fight for LGBT equality took place — and they literally will change the playing field forever.

During the Republican presidential debate last Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” before the New Hampshire primary, a new benchmark in LGBT equality — at least for Republicans — was christened. And the surprise was who set it and who shrugged it off. The frontrunner, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, did the honors.

Here’s the thumbnail version. One of the moderators quoted a pro-gay equality statement from Romney that was published in Boston’s LGBT newspaper Bay Windows, then asks Romney what he will do for nondiscrimination. (A well-phrased question, journalists should note.) Romney, who, it seems during this nomination process has cast aside his previous limited LGBT equality record, states very clearly that he supports nondiscrimination and that, as governor, he appointed LGBT people to his administration and as judges. He then said clearly that he does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. So he answered the question and you’d think that was it, but the journalist — this guy was good — then asked: But what will you do to further the rights of LGBT people?” (Again, journalists please note the phrasing of the question.) Romney clearly says, “I just did that.” Applause. He adds that the only difference he has with the gay community is that he believes “marriage” is solely between a man and a woman. Applause from the audience again.

Here’s the surprise, and why this is a moment that will be marked as the beginning of the long road to reality for Republicans: They then went to Santorum with the question. He attempted to make a joke but it was obvious that the audience was not amused, so he sidestepped the question that has been a hallmark of his campaign. It was his chance to stand out and he knew that disparaging gays would no longer work. And so did every candidate standing up there, since no one took Romney on.
How serious of a change is this? The Obama campaign was quick to send out a press release Monday morning suggesting that Romney was stepping away from comments made at the debate, but that was based on a 2002 flyer that Romney’s team had disavowed. Point is, the handwriting is on the wall and Republicans see the inevitable. Americans are tired of them trashing the gay community. So the frontrunner has drawn a new line in the sand: We believe in nondiscrimination up to the issue of marriage.

So enjoy the next few months and watch the dying gasps of the anti-equality Republican rhetoric, since this is the last presidential race you’ll hear it. They won’t go quietly, but Romney’s statements, if he’s nominated, make that change inevitable.

There was another change last week that needs noting, since my previous column really hit hard on that issue: Chicago’s Cardinal George comparing our community to the KKK. We congratulated the Chicago community on planning to demonstrate against the cardinal, and this column went further, suggesting that if no apology or meeting with the community happened, a look at the Church’s finances would be in order.

Guess what happened? The church blinked, as it did in D.C. when challenged. George apologized. The community in Chicago is mixed on whether the apology was strong enough, but this is their turf, and it is imperative that the national community take note that the Church now twice has blinked when challenged. This is a major change. While we should respect the Church and its religious views, it is also time for the Church to treat our community with that same respect. If not, we must use our tools to create a climate of respect.

Change is in the wind. It is imperative to recognize it and know how to move on to the next battle for equality. The two greatest foes of equality both shifted in one week — important benchmarks on our path to equality.

Drew Wilson: How does it feel to be returning to Denver after having moved to San Diego and hitting it big?
DJ Shane Stiel: Denver will always hold a very special place in my heart. To me Denver is home and where I feel most comfortable and welcome. I think the thing I love most about Denver is the people have such an amazing openness to music. I love to come and share all the great musical goodies that I have for them.

Who's your favorite pornstar and what's the last/best porn movie/scene you watched?
Hmmmm... I don't know if I have a favorite. There are so many pornstars these days it's really hard to keep up. I like 'em beefy and hairy, so along those lines works for me.

Have you ever considered doing porn?
It is my personal preference to not do porn. I have been approached to do it several times and kindly rejected the offer. I don't knock porn at all, but it just is not how I was raised. I prefer to keep those special places of mine special for the man I love, not for the whole world to see.

'Bring It On: The Musical' is inspired by the cheerleading rivalry 'Bring It On' movie franchise. Live theatre goers have been assaulted as of late with stage versions of successful movies, to various degrees of popularity. I could mention the previous attempts, like '9 to 5', but I wouldn’t want to put a negative vibe out there in cyber land.

'Bring It On: The Musical', soars by leaps and bounds (pun intended), above and beyond its celluloid counterpart.

Set in the realm of competitive cheerleading, the characters live in diametrically opposing worlds. The story challenges our notions of what is means to be privileged, popular, and accepted.
The entire cast share exceptional moments of comedic and acrobatic prowess.

Head cheerleader Campbell, played by Taylor Louderman is as endearing as she is beautiful. What amazes me the most is how she can harmonize while literally standing on the shoulders of her cast mates. Taylor brings it!

Gregory Haney plays La Cienega, a confident and beautiful transgender student. I admire how La Cienega struts the stage as an untroubled and strong woman. I must admit that, with her unfettered attitude and amazing body, for me, Haney’s La Cienega is the perfect woman. I think I may be in love. I mean for realz. Haney brings IT!

Ryann Redmond is a star. She plays the outcast and dejected, “neurotic and weird,” Bridget, and takes her character to glorious heights of joy. Her energetic and playful performance is an uplifting celebration of diversity that this musical is all about. Redmond brings it, serves it, crunks it, and the audience loves it!

Elle McLemore is an adorable she-devil as the ambitious and conniving Eva. Adrienne Warren brings it with sass, and a very likeable approach, as Danielle.

Technically the show is a spectacle of lights, sound, set, and costume design that fills the theatre with radiant energy. Under the competent musical direction of Dave Pepin, the show never misses a beat.

Each cast member of 'Bring It On: The Musical' possess such a staggering arsenal of diverse performance talent, it boggles the mind. They sing, dance, leap, tumble, and practically fly on stage. It would be a challenge to recall a show that demands so much physical acuity and confidence.

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Launches a New Sexual Health Text Program for Teens

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains is proud to launch a new text messaging program aimed at teens and youth in the Denver Metro area called, “In Case You’re Curious,” or ICYC

The program is simple; just text “ICYC” to 66746. Then text questions whenever you have them. A highly-trained Planned Parenthood Community Education staff member will answer each question within 24-hours. Standard text messaging rates apply.

“The program offers teens and youth in the Denver Metro area a new resource for asking sexual health questions and more importantly, getting medically accurate, age-appropriate answers to those questions,” said Alison Macklin, director of community education for PPRM.

ICYC reaches teens where they already are. Of the 75 percent of teens who owned cell phones in 2010, 87 percent used text messaging at least occasionally. Among those teen texters[1]:

Half of teens send 50 or more text messages a day, or 1,500 texts a month, and one in three send more than 100 texts a day, or more than 3,000 texts a month.
Older girls who text are the most active, with 14-17 year-old girls typically sending 100 or more messages a day or more than 3,000 texts a month.

From 2007-2009, there were on average 3,240 births among teens ages 15-19 in the seven county Metro Denver area each year. Forty percent of Colorado high school students report having had sex in their lifetime. On average, 17 babies are born to teens in Colorado every day—or about one baby born every 84 minutes[2]. Teens deserve honest, medically accurate, age-appropriate answers about sexual health.
“ICYC is a cool program because sometimes it’s easy to believe what your friends or people on TV say about sex, but you don’t always know what is true and what is just a myth. With ICYC, you get answers that you know are true,” said Stephanie Cisneros, a Denver teen that uses ICYC.

The ICYC program, which was originally created in 2010 for the Denver Teen Pregnancy Prevention Partnership (DTP3), cannot diagnose conditions or give personal medical advice in a text message; its responses are never a substitute for seeing a doctor. Often, the program directs people to Planned Parenthood’s website for more information or encourages the user to contact a health care professional if their question is beyond the scope of ICYC.

“Planned Parenthood works hard to encourage parent-teen communication when it comes to talking about sex and sexual health. We also encourage teens to involve a parent or trusted adult in any health care decision. But we also know that some youth come from families where they may not have a trusted, safe source to turn to. ICYC can serve as that first source for medically accurate information,” said Macklin.

CDC Awards $339 Million to Health Departments for High-Impact HIV Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has begun awarding a total of almost $339 million to state and local health departments across the United States to fund HIV prevention activities this year. The awards are for the first year of a five-year funding cycle and represent a new direction for CDC HIV funding designed to achieve a higher level of impact with every federal HIV prevention dollar spent.

The awards are a critical component of CDC's new high-impact approach to HIV prevention and better align resources to reflect the geographic burden of the HIV epidemic today. As part of this funding announcement, CDC is also providing the health departments with new, specific guidance for prioritizing the most effective prevention programs that will have the greatest impact on reducing new HIV infections.

Providing funding to health departments has long been CDC's single largest investment in HIV prevention, accounting for approximately half of CDC's overall HIV prevention budget.

"With 50,000 new HIV infections every year and a tough economic environment, the need to do more with existing resources is greater than ever," said Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention. "This new approach to prevention funding is designed to focus on the places where needs are most urgent and on the programs that will have the most far-reaching impact. It will help us achieve the ambitious goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy with the efficiency and urgency the HIV epidemic demands."

Funds were awarded to health departments in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, eight U.S. territories and eight cities with heavy HIV burdens.

The funds are allocated to individual health departments according to a formula that better matches resources to the geographic burden of HIV, as measured by the number of people reported living with HIV in each jurisdiction. This new funding approach ensures that many areas with heavier HIV burdens receive urgently needed funding increases.

CDC will award an additional $20 million to health departments by March 2012 as part of this funding cycle to implement innovative HIV prevention demonstration projects. CDC is currently reviewing applications for this competitive round of funding.

"State and local health departments are the backbone of the nation's HIV prevention efforts," said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director of CDC's Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. "This latest round of funding will help them lead the nation to slow, and ultimately end, the HIV epidemic in the United States – a public health imperative that could finally be achieved."

With New York in the national spotlight after becoming the seventh U.S. jurisdiction to usher in marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples, the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – will host its annual Greater New York Gala dinner on February 4, 2012 at the Waldorf=Astoria. This year’s event comes as lawmakers passed historic marriage equality legislation, making New York the largest state in the country to allow gay and lesbian couples to legally marry. Governor Cuomo listed marriage equality as one of his top accomplishments for 2011 in his annual “State of the State” address.

“Marriage equality in New York took center stage this past year,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “We won the battle in the Empire State, sending a message to the rest of the country that full equality for LGBT people is the right thing to do and will be the reality.”

This year HRC will honor Anna Wintour with its Ally for Equality Award for her outspoken support of equality for the LGBT community (see above). The award will be presented by the creator of the hit series Glee and American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy. The Ally for Equality Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of those who dedicate time, energy, spirit and whole-hearted commitment to better the lives of LGBT people. This award is given to allies outside the LGBT community who stand up on behalf of equality for all Americans.

“We recognize Anna Wintour for her grace, dignity, style, philanthropy, and generosity,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “We are proud to honor her with the Ally for Equality Award for her commitment to the LGBT community through her work with marriage equality, HIV/AIDS activism, and the It Gets Better Campaign. It is completely fitting that someone like Ryan Murphy, who has done so much to advance LGBT equality, is presenting this award to Anna Wintour.”

Planned Parenthood leads challenge to yet another Colorado “personhood” initiative

Today, three registered electors, with support from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and Protect Families Protect Choices, asked the Supreme Court to reject this year’s effort to extend full legal and constitutional rights to fertilized eggs.

Last week, the so-called “personhood” initiative was granted a ballot title by a 2-to-1 decision by the State Title Review Board. In setting a title, the Board grappled with whether the proposed initiative met the state’s constitutional single subject requirement, as well as whether it was likely to mislead voters.

The opponents will file their brief to the Colorado Supreme Court later this month.

Colorado voters overwhelming defeated two similar “personhood” amendments in the 2008 and 2010 elections, rejecting the measures by 3-to-1 margins both times.

“Colorado voters have clearly spoken on this issue. While it’d be ideal for Personhood Colorado to respect the wishes of Colorado voters and leave our state constitution alone, Planned Parenthood is prepared to defeat this initiative for a third time,” said PPRM CEO and President Vicki Cowart. “Like the previous two attempts, we will educate and remind voters that Personhood Colorado’s real agenda is to restrict a woman’s ability to make personal, private decisions about her own body even on issues of contraception and in vitro fertilization.”

Background
This is Personhood Colorado’s third attempt since 2008 to pass a “personhood” initiative in Colorado. Protect Families Protect Choices, a coalition of diverse and numerous pro-choice groups including Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, led the opposition campaigns to defeat Amendments 48 (in 2008) and 62 ( in 2010), by 3-to-1 margins both times.

PFPC supported a ballot title challenge to the Colorado Supreme Court in 2008, which was not successful. A ballot title challenge was not presented in 2010. Due to the new language and structure of the proposed 2012 initiative, PFPC in conjunction with PPRM, is confidently supporting a 2012 Supreme Court challenge to Personhood Colorado’s proposed initiative.

Mississippi defeated a “personhood” amendment in November 2011. Like Colorado’s previous “personhood” measures, these amendments would have far-reaching consequences that jeopardize a woman's health and the care she receives from her physician. If passed, the initiative would lay the legal foundation to outlaw all abortions in Colorado even in cases of rape and incest. Likewise, certain forms of birth control, stem-cell research, and in vitro fertilization could be prohibited as a result.

OK, so you have found that idealjob, submitted your resume, waited on pins and needles, finally got the call and now you are going for an interview. Talk about nerve-racking and exciting all at once! But this is your opportunity to shine and if you followthese simple steps, you can turn your next interview into an offer.

1. Do Your Research

If you read my previouspost you will know I suggest keeping a workbook. If you have followed this piece of advice youshould be up to date on the current events of the company that you areinterviewing. If not, now is the time to research the company you areinterviewing with. Go above and beyond what you can find on their website. Search for current newsand events. Also, take time to research the person who you will be interviewingwith (check LinkedIn.com). It is always impressive when a candidate knows aninterviewers' background.

2. Prepare Like a Champ

Prepare, prepare andprepare! Preparation is 90% of success in job interviews. You are guaranteed to be asked certainquestions in every interview so there is no reason not to ace these. Role-playyour answers with a friend, use the mirror, and practice your answers out loudover and over again. Examples of these guaranteed questions include:

Tell me about yourself.
What are your strengths/areas of opportunities?
Why do you want to work here? Why did you apply for the job?
What is the biggest challenge for you in your current/most recent role?
What do you want to learn from your next position?
What questions do you have for me? (Always write these down and bring them with you. It always impresses me when I ask this question and an interviewee responds with “Yes, I prepared some questions, do you mind if I refer to them.")

3. Day of the Interview

Don’t freak out! It isnormal to be nervous but always remember that the person interviewing you getsnervous too and they are really hoping that you are the one they hire. Treat itmore like a conversation rather than an interview. Be friendly, people likefriendly people! On the day of your interview:

Dress for Success. This is not a time to show off your trendy new purchases. Stick with a dark suit that fits well, a simple tie and no cologne (you never know who will be allergic to your cologne). Make sure your shoes are polished and that you are groomed appropriately.
Know where you are going. If you are unsure of the exact location, parking situation, etc., give yourself plenty of time. If you are using public transportation, do not trust their schedule. Arriving late for an interview and blaming the bus or parking is a huge turnoff.
What to bring. Always have a couple of copies of your resume with you along with some paper and a pen so you can take notes. Always have your prepared questions that you can refer to.
Arrive early but not too early. Arrive 10 minutes prior to your interview time. If you are too early, go for a walk or grab a coffee. It is annoying when someone arrives 30 minutes early.
Your interview starts as soon as you arrive. Always be polite and respectful to the receptionist and thank them when leaving. As a recruiter I always ask our receptionist how the candidate behaved when they arrived and while waiting. When the interviewer arrives, greet them by name with a firm handshake and plenty of eye contact.

4. Close and Follow-Up

As the interview comes toan end, do not be afraid to try to "close" the interviewer. A simple question suchas, “Based on our conversation today do you have any concerns that would preventme from being considered for this position?”

This is a powerful question thatwill allow you to address any immediate concerns before an interviewer has timeto think on it further. When it comes to follow-up, 99% of candidates will senda simple email thanking you for their time. Go above and beyond. A hand-writtencard thanking the interviewer(s) and reiterating your interest in the positionand the company goes a long way!

HRC Statement on Govs. Gregoire and Cuomo’s Support for Marriage Equality

On the news that Washington State Gov. Christine Gregoire and New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo both voiced their strong support for marriage equality today, Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, issued the following statement:

“From coast to coast, more and more Americans are coming to appreciate the values they share with committed gay and lesbian couples: the desire to love, honor and protect the person they love. By voicing their strong support for marriage equality, Governors Gregoire and Cuomo propel this issue forward. They confirm what most Americans already believe: committed gay and lesbian couples deserve the ability to marry and establish families protected by law.”

Gov. Gregoire today voiced her support for marriage equality legislation that will soon be introduced in Washington State. New York State passed similar legislation last year, and today, Governor Cuomo listed it as one of his top accomplishments for 2011 in his annual “State of the State” address. Governor Cuomo said that prior to the passage of this legislation, gay and lesbian New Yorkers were treated as “second-class citizens by the government.”

It’s notable that both Governors are Catholics – a group that supports legal recognition of gay and lesbian couples by wide margins. According to the Public Religion Research Institute, Catholics are more supportive of legal recognition of gay couples than members of any other Christian tradition. On the issue of allowing lesbian and gay couples to get a civil marriage license at city hall, 71 percent of American Catholics say they are in favor.

Pariah comes to Denver

A world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the contemporary drama PARIAH is the feature-length expansion of writer/director Dee Rees’ award-winning 2007 short film Pariah. Spike Lee is among the feature’s executive producers. At Sundance, cinematographer Bradford Young was honored with the [U.S. Dramatic Competition] Excellence in Cinematography Award.

Adepero Oduye, who had earlier starred in the short film, portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister Sharonda (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is a good student at her local high school.

Washington United for Marriage Applauds Gov. Gregoire for Historic Support of Marriage Equality

Washington United for Marriage, a broad statewide coalition of organizations, congregations, unions and business associations that will work to obtain civil marriage for lesbian and gay couples in Washington State in 2012, today applauded Gov. Christine Gregoire for her landmark comments and endorsement of marriage equality in the Evergreen State.

“Governor Gregoire made crystal clear why marriage equality matters and why the legislature should pass it this year,” said Zach Silk, campaign manager for Washington United for Marriage. “She has shown tremendous leadership on this issue which affects so many of our friends, family and neighbors.”
During her remarks, Gregoire clearly made the case of why marriage matters and the impact of having separate classifications of relationship recognition for lesbian and gay couples. Thousands of families in Washington State will be impacted by the legislation, which would allow for civil marriage of lesbian and gay couples. Currently, these couples may register for a domestic partnership which confers most of the rights and responsibilities of marriage, but does not recognize the love, commitment and devotion to family that marriage conveys.

"My partner and I have been together 22 years, and our family is very similar to those of my friends and colleagues," said Jennifer Cast, a longtime Washington resident who wishes to marry. "We work hard to create a productive and happy life for ourselves and our family. We cherish the good times and console each other during hard times. We share each other's challenges, sorrows, triumphs, and joys, just like any other couple. We want our love and commitment to be valued and recognized equally in our state."
“When I tell people that Rudy and I have a domestic partnership, they really don’t understand what that means,” said John McCluskey, a longtime resident of Tacoma. “We’ve been together for 53 years and I couldn’t imagine spending my life with anyone else. The thought that people don’t understand that our family faces the same struggles and the same triumphs as any other family in our state is heartbreaking.”

At this time, six states plus the District of Columbia recognize marriage for same-sex couples under state law: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. Nine states—California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington—provide same-sex couples with access to the state level benefits and responsibilities of marriage, through either civil unions or domestic partnerships. Same-sex couples do not receive federal rights and benefits in any state.

National Stonewall Democrats Announces New Leadership

National Stonewall Democrats is proud to celebrate the New Year with the announcement of a new executive leadership team. Jerame Davis has been selected as the organization’s new Executive Director. The group’s board of directors has also elected a new executive committee.

Davis has been serving as the NSD interim Executive Director since late 2011. Before joining the staff, Jerame was vice president of the Indiana Stonewall Democrats affiliate and was actively involved in Democratic politics in the Hoosier state.

In addition to serving in the leadership of many Indiana LGBT organizations, he has consulted for a variety of clients on using technology for better organizing and messaging. He is also the co-founder of a popular national LGBT politics and culture website.

“Democratic politics runs through my veins,” said Davis. “Living most of my life in a red state dominated by GOP gave me a first hand view of just how regressive and dangerous Republican dominance can be – especially for LGBT people. I am honored to be taking the helm of NSD at such a crucial moment.”

In addition to Davis assuming the role of Executive Director, the NSD Board of Directors has elected a new executive team to lead the organization through 2012. Stephen Driscoll (Pembroke, MA) and Laurie McBride (Sacramento, CA) return as co-chairs to succeed outgoing chair Craig Roberts. Aaron Schaler (Indianapolis, IN) will serve as the new secretary and Bill Jacobs (Las Vegas, NV) continues his role as treasurer.

“NSD’s new executive director and leadership team bring a solid perspective tempered with institutional knowledge,” said Roberts. “Working with Jerame for the past few months has been fantastic and I am confident he is the right person to lead NSD at this critical time. I know NSD is in good hands going into 2012 with this team in place.”

“Jerame’s outside-the-beltway perspective and political experience positions National Stonewall Democrats as the national voice for pro-equality Democrats as we head into a presidential election,” said McBride. “With so many affiliates around the country providing vital grassroots support for LGBT Democrats and our allies, I am confident we are ready to win.”
