Summer of Love was the Theme of the 23rd Annual Colorado Springs PrideFest and it was Groovy, Man!

By Drew Wilson

Colorado Springs PrideFest celebrated their 23 anniversary year this past weekend with two days of fun and festivities (the appropriately named) America the Beautiful Park.

Colorado Springs PrideFest is one of my favorite LGBT events and something I look forward attending every year. So I was absolutely delighted to be asked serve as one of the emcees of this year's Pride Parade along with Sarada Connors, Host of the Our Town radio show, and Travis Ruiz, Social Media Manager for FOX 21 News.

The Gazette reports that the enjoyed its largest turnout ever and I'm here to report that a delightful time was had by all of them! So without further ado, here are my pictures from the parade portion of the weekend.

Left to right, Parade Organizer Valdamar Archuleta, yours truly, Sarada Connors, and Travis Ruiz putting in work!

Parade organizer Valdamar Archuleta makes some adjustments to the sound system.

The Coy Mathis Family. Aren't they just adorable in their rainbow dresses and suspender/bowtie combo? Earlier this year the Colorado Civil Rights Division ruled in favor of Coy and her family after Coy's school barred her from using the girls bathroom because she is transgender. The Mathis family served as judges of the Colorado Springs PrideFest Parade along with MMA fighter, model, and husband to my fellow emcee Sarada, Travis Connors.
 Too cute for words, basically!
The Colorado LGBT Color Guard is sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Chapter of AVER (I sent 'em a little extra emcee love from my buddy John J. Kelly like he asked!) and is the first and only regulation quality LGBT color guard in the nation.

Stoli turned up the heat with a flashy Jeep and a sexy guy in teeny tiny underwears. I enjoyed one or two delicious Stoli cocktails later that day in the Stoli VIP Garden!

The United Court of the Pikes Peak Empire is the oldest LGBT organization in Southern Colorado.

Colorado Springs PFLAG and Inside/Out Youth Services stuck together closely, as could be expected.

ARC Thrift Stores had a festive float ...

.. as did Tony's Bar & Grill! I have no idea where one finds pink gorilla suits. Pink gorilla suits, y'all!
The Colorado Springs Leather Contingent with members of Celebration of Power, Voodoo Leatherworks, Pikes Peak Summit Masters, the League of Extraordinary Ladies and other Front Range Leather/Kink organizations.
And here goes Club Q - celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. You go, Club Q!
And bringing up the rear (ha!) was the All Fours Jeep Group. I think there's a double entendre there somewhere if you think about it real hard (ha!).

Colorado Springs PrideFest 2013: Changes in PrideFest Parade Route and Time

The Colorado Springs Pride Festival is celebrating several changes to its historic traditions in its 23rd year of celebrating the local LGBT community. PrideFest 2013 - Summer of Love! - will feature the traditional cos Pride Parade, but with a different route, the first annual Big Gay 5K as a partnership activity with Spree Racing LLC and an sensational new location.

So why premiere so many changes in 2013? cos Pride Center Board member Eric Markum remarked, "With so many exhilarating victories for the LGBT national community we just had to make The Pride Fest even bigger and better. The Colorado Springs Pride Festival was already a great event, but we welcome any chances to expand the LGBT community reach in Southern Colorado."

Also new for PrideFest is the location of the festival itself. For the past 22 years, The Colorado Springs Pride Festival was held in downtown Colorado Springs at Acacia Park. The new venue is still downtown, but further to the south west at America the Beautiful Park. Event organizers say that the new location has an excellent physical layout that will fully support the growing audience of over 25,000 for the Colorado Springs festival and parade. "We just plain outgrew Acacia on many levels and America the Beautiful Park will sustain us for many years." says board member Donald DeAngelis.

Another alteration of the festival is the route of the traditional Colorado Springs Pride Parade. This change has only been instituted in the last few days. "We had to have a new route that truly fit our novel location and the needs of the festival, while remaining cognitive of the needs of those around us." Said cos Pride Executive Director, Charles Irwin. We at Colorado Springs Pride are sensitive to our city's need for highway access and law enforcement resources due to heightened conditions of recent flood and fire disasters. We choose not to close any road in a spot that would hinder such access and streamlined our new route to help CSPD and other emergency responders to still protect citizens and property in fire and flood damaged areas.

Changing the parade route was also a way to unite parade walkers along a route that winds through the heart of Colorado Springs integrating historical sites such as the Pioneers Museum. The new route also ends in a smooth connection to America the Beautiful Park enabling walkers to immediately enjoy the festival at the conclusion of the parade.

Colorado Springs Pride also is premiering a 5K run - with a tongue in cheek name - The Big Gay 5K. The Big Gay 5K will take place at 10:00am Sunday July 21st, one hour before the Pride Parade. cos Pride President Dana Stevens says, "There are so many parts of our community that we are trying to connect with and an event that could connect and empower runners, cyclists and families was an opportunity that we had to take." Says the 5K organizer Clint Knox, "This race is for everyone; walkers, joggers, really fast runners, kids, adults, families, gay & straight. Come to run. Come to have fun. Come to support. Come to PRIDE!"

Colorado Springs PrideFest 2012: Club Q's Weekend Events

The Club Q cuties explain what's up this weekend and it includes Zombie Parties, cash and prizes, free breakfast, Zombie Pride (with free zombie makeover!).

Mile High Hot Guy (Colorado Springs PrideFest Edition): Walker, balloon artist

Lots of hot and sexy guys and gals out and about at Colorado Springs PrideFest today but I think my vote for hottest of them all goes to Walker.

This talented, tattooed cutie-pie made me a naughty balloon guy (bottom pic) and I was instantly smitten.

Also, he wasn't naked under his apron but if you want to pretend that he was,  I won't stop you.
