Dining Out For Life Returns to Denver/Boulder on April 28

The last two years have curtailed most public events, but Dining Out For Life hosted by Subaru soldiered on by helping partner restaurants fill take-out or gift card orders while their own fundraising was severely limited. This year, nearly all of the 50+ Dining Out For Life licensed health care organizations are planning to host an event, inviting supporters to partake in a meal that will be meaningful to all involved.

Sixteen years ago, Subaru of America, the automaker committed to helping those in need, teamed up with the Dining Out For Life organization, along with spokespeople including Ted Allen, host of Food Network's Chopped!, Mondo Guerra, Project Runway All Stars designer and HIV advocate, and film and television actor Pam Grier (Foxy Brown/Jackie Brown), who said: "While many of us may be limited in what we can donate, we can contribute our time to causes we care about. Consider sharing what you can by becoming a volunteer!"

Since 2006, Dining Out For Life has raised more than $52 million dollars with support from Subaru, thousands of restaurants and hundreds of volunteers.

"Subaru and our retailers are committed to caring for our communities nationwide, and over many years of partnership, we've been privileged to support the HIV/AIDS community through Dining Out For Life," said Alan Bethke, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Subaru of America, Inc. "We're excited to bring Dining Out For Life back to cities across North America and invite people to sit down for a meal and show their support for their neighbors who are currently living with HIV and other chronic illnesses."

Now in its 26th year, Dining Out For Life is magnificent in its simplicity: Dine at a participating restaurant and that restaurant will donate a generous portion of the day's proceeds to a local health organization providing essential services to those affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. The 2022 fundraiser will be held on Thursday, April 28 in cities across North America. The event is traditionally held on the last Thursday in April, while some markets have alternate dates. Dining Out For Life: Patrick Mangold-White (And His Six Restaurants) Support Project Angel Heart

On Thursday, April 26, Denver does good just by dining out! Twenty-five percent of your bill will be donated to help Project Angel Heart prepare and deliver medically tailored meals to clients living with HIV/AIDS when you eat out at participating restaurants today. Delicious, right? More than 230 restaurants in Denver and Boulder are taking part in Project Angel Heart's 24th annual Dining Out For Life and six of them belong to Patrick Mangold-White - Mas Kaos, Kaos Pizzeria, Bird, Palizo, Uno Mas Taqueria.

Serving up a wide variety of cuisines and dining experiences, all six of the restaurants are united in their support of Project Angel Heart and Denver’s LGBT community.

“This is the first year that all of the restaurants are taking part in Dining Out For Life,” said Patrick. “We stand behind the community, employ the community, and the community should feel exceptionally welcome in our spaces."

Dining Out for Life is an internationally licensed event hosted in 60 markets since 1991. This year, an estimated 300,000 people across North America are expected to help raise more than $4 million in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Project Angel Heart’s event in the Denver/Boulder metro area is the largest in the nation, with more participating restaurants and more funds raised than any other market. In 2017, Denver/Boulder-area restaurants, breweries, and community members helped Project Angel Heart raise more than $330,000.

“The wonderful thing about Dining Out for Life is you can do it three times a day, a different restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” says Dining Out For Life Ambassador – and Denver native - Mondo Guerra. “You can sit down and have a meal with someone interesting, someone you love, maybe someone you haven’t seen in a while. And, it’s an opportunity to have a conversation. The fight against this disease begins with real, honest conversation.”

Do Good by Dining Out For Life at Rhein Haus and Wally's Wisconsin Tavern

Dining Out For Life is an annual restaurant-based event with a truly fulfilling call to action: Dine at one of the 3,000 participating restaurants in more than 60 cities across North America on Thursday, April 26, 2018 and that restaurant will donate a generous portion of the day's proceeds to fund HIV/AIDS care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential services in their city.

And no city raises more than Denver! Project Angel Heart’s event in the Denver/Boulder metro area is the largest in the nation, with more participating restaurants and more funds raised than any other market. In 2017, Denver/Boulder-area restaurants, breweries, and community members helped Project Angel Heart raise more than $330,000.

One Denver restaurant taking part is Rhein Haus, gay owned and part of an ever-increasing family of German inspired beirgartens and bocce halls with locations in Tacoma and Seattle, I had a chance to speak with owner Matt Fundingsland about their participation, pretzels, and their plans for Denver PrideFest!

How long has Rhein Haus been participating in Dining Out For Life?
This will be our second year participating in Project Angel Heart. We are also happy to announce that our sister restaurant, Wally's Wisconsin Tavern, is participating for the first time this year.

And why do you participate in Dining Out For Life?

Project Angel Heart has been delivering meals to patients with HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses since the early 90's. We feel it's a wonderful cause to contribute to and we plan on participating every year.

What message do you have for readers of MileHighGayGuy and why should they come to Rhein Haus?

We take pride in our service, food, and drinks at both Rhein Haus and Wallys Wisconsin Tavern. We can cater in-house events of any size with our 14k square foot, two level facility. Whether our guests are here to kick back with a stein of beer on one of our four indoor bocce ball courts, or have a nice seated dinner with friends and family, we will make it happen! Plus, who doesn't love bottomless mimosas and french toast on weekends? We feel we have something to offer for everybody!

And once they get there, what should they order?
Some of our guest's favorites are pork schnitzel, our house-made sausages, and fresh baked pretzels.

All proceeds from Dining Out for Life in the Denver/Boulder area directly support Project Angel Heart, a nonprofit organization that prepares and delivers medically tailored meals for people living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, kidney disease, and other serious illnesses. Funds raised through this event specifically benefit those clients living with HIV/AIDS.

The fundraiser was dreamed up twenty-five years ago by a volunteer at ActionAIDS in Philadelphia and is magnificent in its simplicity: More than 3,000 restaurants participate by donating a generous portion of the day’s proceeds to fund HIV/AIDS care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential services in their city.

Dining Out For Life: A conversation with Ted Allen

Dining Out For Life: A conversation with Ted Allen
By Drew Wilson

Dining Out For Life 2010 takes place on Thursday, April 29.  Dine at any of the participating restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and 25 percent of your food bill goes directly to Project Angel Heart.

Find a list of participating Denver restaurants by clicking here.

I had a chance to talk to Dining Out For Life spokesperson Ted Allen ('Queer Eye,' 'Iron Chef America,' 'Chopped') about why Dining Out is such an important event, his love of food, and the societal impact of 'Queer Eye.'

Drew: How’d you get hooked up with Dining Out For Life?
Ted: They approached me three years ago and it just seemed like such a good fit. I was familiar with Dining Out from way back when I lived in Chicago. I participated in its very first year and now this is the 20th anniversary of the event.

Happy anniversary Dining Out For Life!
Yay! It’s such an elegant, simple idea. The real heroes in the HIV/AIDS movement are the activists and the people who dedicate their lives to it, but we can’t all do that. I’m busy. You’re busy. But anybody can go out to dinner and make a truly meaningful contribution in just one day. This thing raises four million dollars in one day. One day. Just grab a group of friends, head out to dinner, run up a big bill, and feel great about it.

You’re famous for your interest in, and love of, food. Where did that come from?
I’ve loved cooking since I was a child and my mom always encouraged it. I got a little more serious about it when I moved to Chicago and was working for I magazine. Restaurant coverage was a big part of the magazine and I got introduced to different kinds of cooking and wine and people. I find that people who work in and run restaurants tend to be really fun, crazy, generous people.

Why should people participate in Dining Out For Life?
It’s a great excuse to just throw your diet out the window! Seriously, we all have to eat. You’re going to eat on Thursday anyway so you might as well participate in Dining Out For Life. Every dollar raised in Denver for Dining Out stays in Denver so you are not only helping area restaurants and people with HIV/AIDS, but having a nice dinner with your friends. It’s a win/win situation.

Let me end with just one ‘Queer Eye’ question. Looking back, what impact do you think the show had?
It’s so funny how long it’s been.

I live next door to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and I walked outside the other day and this 18-year-old kid stopped me on the street and said, “I knew you lived in the neighborhood and I wanted to say hi because I used to watch ‘Queer Eye’ when I was 13. It helped me come out to my parents because they watched it.”

‘Queer Eye’ was an entertainment show and it had all sorts of trite and trivial aspects to it but the enduring thing about it to me was all the young people we heard from who said that because of the show’s popularity, it made it easier for them to come out.

We didn’t set out to be important but one of the consequences of being honest and open as a gay person is that it makes it easier for other people. For me was the best part.

Volunteers needed for Dining Out For Life

On Thursday, April 29, over 300 local restaurants will donate 25 percent of their food sales to Project Angel Heart, through Dining Out for Life.

Project Angel Heart still need about 60 volunteer Restaurant Ambassadors to help make the event a success. Ambassadors welcome guests into the restuarants, talk to them a little about Project Angel Heart, and inform them of the opportunity to make an additonal personal donation. It's a very fun volunteer activity - and it makes a huge difference as restaurants with Ambassadors raise an average of $625 more than those without Ambassadors.

Please consider volunteering as an Ambassador with Dining Out for Life. There are still lots of restaurants that need volunteers ... and there are breakfast, lunch and dinner shifts available. For more info, or to register as an Ambassador, please go to www.projectangelheart.org/dol. If you have any questions contact Sean Wolfe, Director of Volunteer Resources at Project Angel Heart, at 303-830-0202 ext. 16 or swolfe@projectangelheart.org.
