A Passion for Fashion: The 2013 Gino Velardi Fashion Show

By Drew Wilson

Named "Denver's Best Fashion Designer" at the Denver Style Expo, Gino Velardi is one of the stars of Denver's burgeoning fashion scene.

But Velardi's designing dreams nearly came to an end when he recently suffered a stroke followed by a brain aneurysm and a bout with colon cancer (he is now in remission).

While Velardi is doing better now health-wise, we all know health care isn't cheap and so the Denver-based, self-taught fashion designer is hosting a fashion show Thursday, October 3 to raise money for his medical expenses.

The 2013 Gino Velardi Fashion Show will feature a show of over 75 looks with 25 models, a retrospective display of Gino Velardi fashions in the reception area, a live photo shoot, fabulous music by Rockstar Aaron, and free food at Exdo Event Center.

I had a chance recently to chat with the exuberant artist about the upcoming show, Denver's fashion scene, and being Denver's "Best Fashion Designer."

So Gino, how does it feel to be Denver’s Best Fashion Designer?
According to the Denver Style Expo? It feels great! I get so many awards, you see. This and that, an Oscar here and there. (laughs)

Fashion is such a difficult and competitive business. To what do you attribute your success as a fashion designer?
It’s funny, I’ve just been doing it so long. I’ve just been sticking it out here in Denver and I love being part of the art and fashion scene. I know and work with so many different people and I speak at schools like AI and Emily Griffiths; I think a lot of it is just that I’ve been in the game for so many years.

How many years we talking?

Oh, really? You want to count years? (laughs) I would say professionally about 10 years but I started off doing costuming and styling for little shows before that. It just kind of happened and I realized I had a talent for it.

Growing up my parents' goal for me was to become a trial lawyer but that wasn’t for me. I was always in the art scene but I didn’t really want to be a designer until a friend of mine who owned a gallery she said she wanted to put me on the bill to show a few outfits at a

show she was doing. I was like 'no thanks' but she was like 'it’s already done'. So I ran out that day to a pawn shop and bought a sewing machine and went to a fabric store and created six outfits. They were horrendous. Awful. But it gave me the bug and I’ve done hundreds of shows since then. I paid my dues at bars and little galleries and at this point in my life I’m at a level where we’re having large shows - 70 outfits, 25 models, two salons are working with me on this because it’s such a big show. I’m one hundred percent self-taught but I decided if I was gonna do it I was gonna do it all the way.

That's such an excellent life lesson. I think people sometimes overlook the fact that we don't start out as experts at anything. We have to work and learn and evolve and we have to create our share of not-so-great stuff ...
A lot of it! A lot of bad, really terrible stuff! But then you eventually make it to the other side of the fence.

For those who aren't familiar with you works, how would you describe your aesthetic as well as the looks we'll be seeing at the 2013 Gino Velardi Fashion Show?
Well, usually I’m known for my cocktail dresses and evening gowns, high fashion stuff. But this particular show I wanted to start with more casual, ready-to-wear stuff; separate pieces, which I really don’t do a lot of. Back in the day I’d always go with a theme but now I just focus on the clothes and selling well-made, tailored clothes.

But one thing I always have to have is sexiness. I want women to feel sexy. And if they feel sexy already, they could feel sexier. Nothing trashy, though. I always design with my sister, mother, and grandmother in mind. They could all wear something of mine.

Rockstar Aaron
My other inspiration is music. It gets me moving creatively, gets me off my butt and sewing.

What’s the music that's inspiring you these days?

Oh, I’m kind of old school. I like Donna Summer. Or a new group would be Hercules and Love Affair. Just whatever puts me into the mood. Different songs inspire different parts of the show. I also have a lot of musician and DJ friends and they also inspire me.

Speaking of DJs, Rockstar Aaron is doing the music right? He's great!

Yeah! He’s a great guy and an amazing DJ. He’s gonna get the place rocking, I’m sure!

And how are you feeling, health wise?
I'm feeling good and trying to always focus on the positive and keep busy focusing on working and shows and whatever is coming up next!

Over the last five or so years Denver’s fashion scene seems to really have exploded… Yes! When I started nobody was doing anything. But at this point it’s like, wow, there are so many up and coming designers. And not only that but we all have a separate client base and point of view. So much variety. It’s awesome to see it. But it is a hard business. Some come up and do a few shows and you never hear from them again but others really stick it out. I think Denver’s really coming up in the fashion scene. I’m a Denver native so I really try to support it. We all know each other and support each other.

I know Project Runway was recently holding auditions. Is that something you would ever consider or have interest in?
Actually, I’ve done it twice before and each time I made it all the way to the end. Physicals, psychological tests, I had to send in baby pictures. All that. But right at the very, very end they had to discard a couple of people and I was unfortunately one of them. But they’ve been in contact since then.

Interesting! Finally, what's your message for readers of MileHighGayGuy and why should they come out to the show?
Support the talent and the scene in Denver. Support the Denver arts and fashion scene. There’s so much to see and do and it’s a hard industry, especially in Denver. So many people think they have to move to New York to make it but I support Denver. Oh, and another wonderful cause to support is Red Ball, I've been a part of Red Ball for the last two years and will be doing it this year as well in December. It's by CAP and it's an awesome event for a wonderful cause!

Nice to See StevieB: Man Uggs < Muggs

By StevieB

Three years ago, on Christmas morning, I unwrapped what would be a life-changing present. This amazing gift was from my good friends, Frank and Kevin. Who knew one gift would alter my life in such an amazing and comforting way. Sheepskin fleece lined slippers. Since then I have realized that there comes a time when you decide that comfort just might be more important than style.
In the past three years I have purchased dress shoes, five pairs of Pumas, Nikes, and several other running athletic shoes, yet what I ware the majority of the time, is my sheepskin slippers. Sometimes I did receive some gentle teasing for showing up to restaurants, house parties, Opera Colorado, dinner parties, the gym, and pick-a-part junkyards sporting house shoes, but hey; they’re suede leather, that’s fancy.  The only down side to this choice of pro foot comfort - sans style is that I had to resign myself to never achieving status as one of the cool kids. The jocks never sit at the cool-kid table kicking back in sheepskin-lined boots. Or do they…
Just as I had abandoned any hope of being one of the cool kids, I was standing in line at Taco Bell, in my most comfortable footwear, when a local high school gang of hot jock – athletic type dooods came poring into the establishment. I continued to text away waiting for my #7 as I pretended to not notice their tight jeans and clear skin. As I waited for my order, I noticed something… they were all pretty much wearing the same type of kicks.  I would of snapped a picture, but felt it wrong to be the forty year old guy that stands in Taco Bell, taking photos of seventeen year old boys. “No, officer! It’s just for my blog.”
With this level of encouragement, I now have worked up my self-image to publicly say that I am comfortable enough in my masculinity to wear Uggs. Man Uggs. Muggs. I have asked Santa for a pair of Muggs. All the sheepy softness to cradle my feet in a “I stopped caring about fashion, yet I really yearn to be stylish” kind of way. We’ll see if Santa agrees.

The Gay Vegans: What is sexy? Body image in our gay, vegan world.

By Dan Hanley

It was the summer of 1995. I was single and living in Norfolk, VA. My summer tan was rocking and I was looking good. I was headed to Richmond for the weekend with a friend, and had to find something sexy to wear to the club. I am laughing hard while writing this as what I bought is something I would never wear now. I went with a pair of overalls but not your ordinary farmer guy overalls. These were overalls that were shorts, not long pants. Oh yeah, I was not messing around.

Off to Richmond we went. My outfit rocked. I felt sexy. So sexy that I didn't wear a tshirt underneath.

So sexy.

It wasn't always that way.

I was 29 when I first wore a tank top in public. Just before that was the first time I would go shirtless at a beach. I would take my shirt off to swim, but if I wasn't swimming, I had the shirt on.

I was skinny. In the Navy guys would call me the Ethiopian poster child. When I got sober I weighed all of 138 pounds and was the same height I am today at 197 pounds (6'3"). Body shame was ingrained in every ounce of my being.

Little by little the my body shame went away. Once in a while it returns, but for just brief moments. The funny thing about that is one day I can feel good about my body and the very next day I can feel some type of negativity about my body. Of course overnight my body had not changed! I realized long ago that the way I feel about my body is probably the way I feel about myself as a person. If I can learn to love myself then I could probably become comfortable with my body.

These days I am very comfortable with my body. In the summer time I rarely wear a shirt, and I love driving home from work in summer afternoons shirtless and listening to dance music. I work out, swim and play racquetball but I do all of those things to be healthy, not so my body might look perfect to others.

I find sexiness in compassion. I find it in kindness. I can see a guy being loving to his girlfriend and find sexiness in that. It isn't always about the looks. Don't get me wrong, I think Adam Levine is very sexy, as well as a handful of other guys I have posted on Pinterest. You will notice that many of these guys are doing incredible things in this world, a big part of what makes them sexy.

I wanted to write this blog post to let those who struggle with body image know that I can totally relate, and that the person they are is much more important than the body they inhabit.

Thank you for reading.

OUT100 Continues Roll-Out With the Biggest Names in Fashion

My only question is, where's Mondo?!?

The OUT100 continues their roll-out of the most influential and compelling people of the year. Today’s roll-out includes some of the biggest names in the Fashion Industry as well as Alex Morse (top left), the Mayor of Holyoke, Mass.   Elected at 22-years-old of a working-class Irish Catholic New England community – and the fact that he did it while being completely open about his sexuality is downright extraordinary.

The Fashion Insiders honored in the OUT100 include:

Joseph Altuzarra (left): “I was really nerdy and kind of unpopular in school, and I felt like clothing could have a transformative effect on my life,” says Altuzarra, who has enjoyed his most successful year since launching his eponymous womenswear label in 2008.  “I saw the fashion industry as an escape glamorous, and also a very free place in terms of sexuality.”

Steven Kolb: As executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Steven Kolb holds considerable sway in the fashion world.

Antonio Azzuolo: The Montreal native, an alumunus of prestigious fashion houses including Hermes, Ralph Lauren, and Kenzo, has lately garnered attention for his hand-tailored menswear collection, a.a. Antonio azzuolo.

Efva Attling: The former model and rocker hasn’t given up the limelight just yet.  The Swedish-born jewelry designer, who has logged time with H&M and Levi’s, stays plenty current with her stunning, irreverent jewelry line, which is a favorite for boldfaced names including Madonna and Uma Thurman.

Alejandro Ingelmo: Ingelmo, whose six-year-old line specializes in super-high shoes for ladies and blinged-out sneakers for guys, continues his march toward ubiquity thanks to partnerships with high-profile brands, like a recent project for Swarovski.

Philip Crangi: Crangi, who grew up wanting to make sci-fi movies now channels his love of Star Wars, nature, and history into his other-worldly jewelry.   Although he designs for men and women, he says the person in his mind when he’s working is “always Charlotte Rampling,” and that’s good enough for us.

Does this underwear make my bulge look fat?

The Shock Jock Extreme line from Andrew Christian features a hidden cup that not only adds inches onto your frontal measurement; it also helps create the perfect shaped bulge every time you wear them…no matter how cold it is outside.

With the Shock Jock Extreme one can add up to 2 inches to their frontal measurement; that means this is the biggest enhancing underwear on the market today. The pad in the front is removable, making this underwear versatile as well. The Shock Jock Extreme features contoured trim along the leg openings of the boxer which gives it the "retro" look and feel. The line also features brief, jocks and swimwear. The brief and jock come in White, Black, Vintage Grey, Royal, Navy and Red. Every garment in this line is made in the USA.

"With the immense success of the Show-It line, I wanted to try to build upon the body enhancing idea," says designer Andrew Christian. "I wanted to create a product that would give the user a perfect shaped bulge every time they wear it."
