Defense of DOMA could cost House millions

The GOP-led legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act could cost up to $2 million after a new cap on litigation expenses was approved without Democratic input. The $500,000 increase in the spending cap drew condemnation from Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who accused her Republican counterparts of hiding the new contract. 

"Republicans should not be spending $2 million to defend discrimination in our country," Pelosi said.

Prlodi sees policy's demise as "defining" victory

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ranks the lifting of the military ban on openly LGBT troops as "very high" on the list of accomplishments during her four-year run as speaker of the House and one that "will be remembered as a defining time when we said no to discrimination." 

Pelosi gave strong credit to out U.S. Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., and our own Jared Polis, D-Colo., for helping end the policy.

Pelosi: Don't Ask, Don't Tell will be a sad memory in 2011


U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told a crowd at a Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund event this week that "Don't ask, don't tell" will "just be a sad memory" after this year. She further suggested the policy could be ended without a vote in the Senate, where repeal legislation is being held up, saying, "that will happen with or without Congress." Pelosi was on hand to receive the Victory Fund's Gay & Lesbian Leadership Award, in recognition of her career-spanning support for LGBT equality.
