Homo for the Holidays: Krewe of Chaos Presents 1st Annual Christmas Tree and Decoration Auction Fundraiser

Krewe of Chaos will be holding their first annual Christmas Tree and Decoration Auction this Thursday, December 6 at Bug Theatre and will be a fundraiser for Rainbow Alley, a drop-in center designed to support Denver's LGBT youth.

And just who are the Krewe of Chaos? "We are an organization that exists to fund-raise for other groups that maybe don’t have the manpower or resources to fund-raise for themselves," Krewe member Justin Hatcher. "We focus primarily on the LGBT community and we're mainly known for our annual event Boots and Boxers. This was our sixth year for Boots and Boxers and it was very successful. We ended up bring in over $12,000 that night."

Although the primary beneficiary of Thursday night's fundraising efforts will be Rainbow Alley, there will be one specially decorated tree that will be auctioned off to benefit Children's Hospital Colorado.

But don't plan on seeing anybody in boots and/or boxers this time around. "Not this time," says Hatcher. "This event will be a very family-friendly affair for the holidays. And I really have to give a shout out to Equinox Theatre Company. They are really helping us with this event and are going to be providing the evening’s entertainment – singing and a variety show. It should be a great time."

And what does Krewe of Chaos have planned for the new year? "2012 was a rebuilding year for us," explains Hatcher. "We scaled back a little bit but now we are ready to expand for 2013 with a couple of fun events planned for spring. We’re looking forward to continuing to help the community and t to put on fun events that people will enjoy and be happy to support. Everybody knows Boots and Boxers and now we’re ready to put some new events on the map."

Boots N' Boxers Celebrates 5th Anniversary!

Boots N' Boxers, Denver's largest underwear and swimwear fundraiser returns with its 5th Anniversary Event on Saturday, May 19 at Casselman's Bar and Venue. The auction will run from 8-11pm with a fabulous VIP pre-party beforehand from 6-8pm.

Boots N' Boxers is a charitable underwear auction that sells new men's designer underwear and swimwear to benefit Denver's GLBT youth drop-in center, Rainbow Alley. Produced by the Krewe of Chaos, the live show features Denver's hottest guys modeling the sexiest new underwear. Winning bidders also have the option of collecting their underwear purchase from the model that night (and in private!).

Boot's N' Boxers was first inspired by Bryan Williams, Founding Captain of Krew of Chaos as a fundraising event to qualify for the International Gay Rodeo Association title.

"When Boots N' Boxers first started, I had no idea it would grow this much. I thought it would be a one-time event and I am glad to see it taking off to become an institution unto itself," says Williams.

Being a gay teen is risky business

A new study shows that gay teens are more likely to engage in risky behavior - everything from unsafe sex all the way up to suicide - than their straight counterparts.

However, studies also show that gay teens who have access to support groups and programs like The GLBT Community Center of Colorado's Rainbow Alley are much less likely to suffer these kinds of negative behaviors than youth who do not.

Gaybutante this Saturday

Gaybutante, The Center's annual fundraiser for Rainbow Alley, is a chance for LGBT youth to tell their stories and be themselves in front of a caring and supportive audience. Modeled after the debutante tradition, Gaybutante doesn't just "accept" the youth for who they are, it honors and empowers them to take pride in themselves.

Your contribution of $75 today will allow a Rainbow Alley youth to experience Gaybutante, which is this Saturday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel. Sponsor a youth so he or she can hear positive messages of hope about being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Colorado Queer Youth Summit recap

More than 150 youth from around the state descended on Mi Casa Resource Center in Denver on Feb. 13 for the second annual Colorado Queer Youth Summit.

The summit included workshops on topics ranging from spirituality to separatism within the LGBT community. The day also showcased dance performances, art creation and group activities.
The summit is also meant to help LGBT and questioning youth network so they don't feel isolated and alone.

"The youth of this state offer the one true hope that the change we seek will happen and be sustained for the long term," said Andie Lyons, program manager for Rainbow Alley.

Rainbow Alley was one of the organizing sponsors of the event, along with The Lambda Center in Fort Collins and several other LGBT organizations around the state.

Hundreds of youth visit the Alley every month for friendship, support and a safe space to hang out. The Alley is a drop-in center designed to support LGBT youth and their allies ages 12-21. It provides a warm and welcoming environment for the youth to be themselves.

Out of the closet ... in middle school?

A recent article in The New York Times looks at the increasingly commonplace phenomenon of LGBT youths coming out in middle school.

"Just how they're faring in a world that wasn't expecting them -- and that isn't so sure a 12-year-old can know if he's gay -- is a complicated question that defies simple geographical explanations," writes Benoit Denizet-Lewis. "... What is clear is that for many gay youth, middle school is more survival than learning -- one parent of a gay teenager I spent time with likened her child's middle school to a 'war zone.'

In Colorado, one resource for gay youth is Rainbow Alley, a drop-in center for 12-21-year-olds which provides health services, counseling and referal, youth-led events and activities, and life resources in a safe and supportive space.

Gaybutante Ball

The GLBT Community Center of Colorado is proud to announce the 11th annual Gaybutante celebration, benefiting Rainbow Alley, the Center's youth drop-in program. This year the celebration will take place on Saturday, October 10 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Auraria Campus and will again be hosted by Channel 2's own Chris Parente.

Gaybutante honors the strength and courage of Denver youth who have embraced their GLBT identity. Modeled after the debutante tradition, “Gaybutantes” tell their compelling and inspiring coming out stories in front of a welcoming community of friends and supportive, safe adults.

We also honor adults and other youth agencies that have made a positive impact in the GLBT youth community this year. The Gaybutante celebration is always one of our most powerful events, and undoubtedly one of the most important in the Denver GLBT community.
