Men's Underwear Needed ...

... but not for the reasons you may be thinking! It's for a good cause!

In their last fiscal year, Urban Peak worked with 1,469 homeless young guys - many of them gay or bisexual. And, if you know anything about young guys you know that they all need underwear! Urban Peak is reaching out to all of their supporters asking for a donation of *new* men's boxer/boxer brief underwear. None of that tighty whitey business, you hear? Kids today are not trying to wear tighty whiteys! Anyway, they need M and L sizes and they need a lot of 'em. Can you help?

“With all of the successes around equality that we have seen just in the past year, it is difficult to imagine that today a young person is coming home to his bags packed, and in that most vulnerable moment of finally having come out to his parents, is asked to leave home," Dan Hanley, Urban Peak's Director of Development and Public Affairs, has said. "40% of the estimated 1.7 million youth experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTIQ. At Urban Peak, we provide complete and absolute safety for these youth, most of whom have experienced levels of trauma that would shock you.”

Join Urban Peak's 921 Project To Support Denver's Homeless Youth!

On Tuesday, December 10 at 8am Urban Peak is inviting one and all to their downtown location (730 21st Street / 21st and Stout) to participate in the 921 Project, a special event that will draw attention to the enormous tragedy of youth homelessness in the Denver community.

According to the latest Point-In-Time survey conducted by the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative (MDHI), there are 921 youth ages 13 to 24 who experience homelessness on any given day in the Denver metropolitan area. 921. Many of them members of the GLBT community.

Urban Peak wants to show our community exactly what 921 youth looks like. They are hoping to gather 921 people together in one location and take a picture. They will be closing down the street in front of Urban Peak’s Administration Building (21st Street between Stout & California), and from the rooftop, they are going to take a picture of 921 people, each person representing one youth who sleeps on the streets of Denver.

Will you join them for the photo shoot? Will you be one of the 921?

Young and homeless

Homelessness among GLBT youth is a big problem. 365gay.com has an excellent feature on homeless youth in NYC, but the problem happens right here in Denver, as well, so remember to support Urban Peak, the fantastic local program for homeless youth with a focus on GLBT and queer youth. Urban Peak has two locations – one in Denver and one in Colorado Springs.
