Valentines Gay: Why Equality Matter in Same-Sex Relationships

By Patti Verbanas for Rutgers Today

Charlotte Markey
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love, romance and the yearning for a satisfying relationship often becomes more magnified than at other times during the year.

If you are in a committed relationship, it’s not unusual to wonder if it will last. If you can’t seem to make that perfect connection, you may ask yourself what you’re doing wrong. And if you are the type of person to go from one romantic hook up to the next, finding a partner who will rescue you from what you may think is a road to nowhere may seem impossible.

To help us decipher some of the science behind romance, lust and love, we thought Valentine’s Day would be a good time to ask Charlotte Markey, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University-Camden who recently studied the relationships of gay and lesbian couples, to help us understand which relationships seem to work, why others don’t and how to look at your partner in a realistic light.

The study – which Markey co-authored with Patrick Markey (Villanova University), Christopher Nave and Kristin August (both at Rutgers-Camden) – surveyed 72 gay couples and 72 lesbian couples to explore how partners’ compatibility affected the quality of their relationships.
Her discovery: Lesbian women who find their partners too controlling and gay men whose significant others have personality traits that swing too far to one extreme might want to reconsider sticking around for the long-term.

“We found that women with partners who are domineering overwhelmingly report low satisfaction in their relationships,” she says. “Women value equality and don’t want to be bossed around. This finding suggests that over time assertiveness doesn’t wear very well with women.”

For men, the study found that any extremes in their partners’ personalities – whether they were overly passive or domineering, for example – led to discord in the relationship.

In both men and women, individuals who were distrustful and ambivalent to the happiness of others tended to report low levels of relationship quality.

These findings may suggest associations between relationship satisfaction and how individuals interacted socially. “For example, it may be that if you’re more interpersonally awkward, you exhibit negative qualities that cause others to not like you as much, which means you have less positive relationships,” Markey says. “This may become a cycle: Socially awkward people have bad relationships, which devolve into worse relationships.”

So, what should you do if you think you’re at risk of finding yourself in bad relationship after bad relationship? Markey suggests that you spend some time working on yourself before jumping into the next relationship. Working with a therapist may have long-term benefits for both you and your future significant other.

Also, be cognizant of your partner’s traits and don’t dismiss them as behaviors that can be changed. “If your partner is domineering now, they likely will be that way 10 years from now,” Markey says.

Bridegroom (and 5 other romantic gay movies to watch this Valentines Gay)

Local couple Nicholas and Tyler Johnson recently hosted a special screening of the film Bridegroom at the Sie FilmCenter on Colfax with a portion of the proceeds benefiting One Colorado.

Bridegroom is the story of Shane Bitney Crone and Tom Bridegroom. When Tom died, Shane lost all legal claims to the life they had shared and was even banned from the funeral. It's a sad story but one that is also romantic, poignant and ultimately, powerful.

And it's available on Netflix along with many other romantic gay movies you might like to watch or watch again including the following:

1. Brokeback Mountain: It's the gay Romeo & Juliet; the saddest gay love story ever told.

2. Mulligans: Nathan is married to a woman but falls hard for his son's handsome friend Chase when the two come home for summer break. It's a lot better than it sounds.

3. Another Country: Life was complicated for beautiful boys who loved boys in the 1930s.

4. The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Greene: Based on the brilliant comic strip by Eric Orner, The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Greene didn't wow me when it first came out in 1998 but has definitely grown on me in subsequent viewings.

5. Bankgok Love Story: "An unlikely, forbidden love blossoms between a police informant and the icy assassin sent to kill him in this steamy, gay-themed Thai crime drama," says Netflix. To which I have nothing to add. It's good stuff.

Word got out and before I knew it more and more of the emails I was receiving from my website were going to the dogs! And cats!"

WET Hot Tips to make Valentines Gay More Fun!

So, you've left your Valentine's Day planning to the last minute, huh? Whether you intended to or not, there's still time to let your significant other know how much you care. If you did forget to make dinner reservations in advance, just know you're probably not alone. Many Valentine's Day lovers leave making plans until the very last minute. Single? Don't stay home and shave your legs on Valentine's Day. Call up the people you love and go out on the town and have fun! You never know who you might meet. Valentine's Day can be whatever you make it. So go ahead and flavor you Valentine's Day however you like it. Sweet, sexy or spicy...It's all up to you, and we've got ideas to make your Valentine's Day absolutely delicious this year.

You enjoy your partner's company 365 days a year, but a Valentine Day date can be something very special you'll both enjoy. You don't have to blow the budget to remind your partner that he rocks your world and you are lucky to have found him. Go to a movie, a dance club or a bowling alley. Then off to a quick dinner at a favorite place and then maybe a cozy bar an after-dinner drink.

If going out on Valentine's Day isn't your scene, then how about cooking up something in the kitchen together? Peeling and chopping may not seem a very romantic idea initially but it won't take long before you'll find yourselves seduced by the tastes, smells, and textures of food. A night in the kitchen can be a highly sensual experience. Invite your partner to sample the meal by having him lick a tidbit off your fingers or feed him strawberries from your mouth to his.

If you and your partner have been together for a long time and need a way to reconnect, Valentine's Day is a great time to recreate your favorite date. There's always one date that stands out in a relationship. If you're in a relationship, you've probably both shared the memories of it together, so go out and recreate it as a surprise. Remembering your special day will touch your partner.

Take a field trip together to an "adult toy" store. Nothing will spice up Valentine's Day like getting a present from a store that's all about sex! Let your imagination run wild as you are shopping for leather, blindfolds, and silk scarves. Or check out the battery-operated devices, flavored lubes, and body paints. Just going out shopping for toys will make your Valentine's Day steamy, sultry, and sexy!

How about a Valentine's Day scavenger hunt? Leave little notes around the house or your neighborhood with cute messages for partner that contains clues to find the next note. You can make the notes as dirty or as sweet as you'd like your evening to be. At the end of the scavenger hunt make sure he finds you waiting for him with dinner or a gift.

Your Valentine's Day fun will last longer with Wet® Synergy(TM) Water + Silicone Lubricant, the new hybrid lubricant from Wet®. New LiquiSatisfaction(TM) Technology delivers a soothing cushion of gel that transforms into a silky layer of liquid lubrication. Both hydrating formulas deliver long lasting moisture with the easy clean-up of a water-based gel. Available in Original or with the added sensation of Cool Tingle or Warming.

come on and tell her she's the only one
come on and tell her i do, for you
everybody needs someone to love her
everybody needs someone to say that
i'll do, for you, anything

no time, no fear, only love
no time, no fear, only love

breath, sigh, open your heart song
the leaves fall, colored and wise

when, when you have found that someone

Horoscope: Happy Valentine's Gay

by Eric Kehela

Valentine's Day for Couples

Do you need to spice up your love life a bit? This month isn’t just devoted to St. Valentine, it is devoted to the love you have within and how you can share it with your significant-other.

This Valentine’s Day do something special, unexpected and outside-the-box for the one you love.

Try hiding little love notes around the house or in his bag/briefcase with a flower or two as a reminder of your appreciation.

Pick up a special greeting card, or put your creativity to work and create a card full of warm and loving thoughts. As commercialized as the holiday seems to have gotten, you can still use it as a reminder to rekindle the flame of your relationship.

Candy, cakes and sweets can compliment your sweet words. Make the time to bake some Cinnamon Chocolate-Chip (if not allergic) cookies with secret love notes baked into them (make sure the paper and ink is safe for baking), that way he’ll have a little love note in each cookie.

If you have a night planned, make sure you have enough time to prepare the romantic-unwinding portion of the evening. At either his place or yours (or your shared abode, if you live together), make a trail of rose petals or love notes from the entry-door to the bathtub.

Ideally with every note he should remove an item of clothing (“Happy Valentine’s Day sugar, take off your shoes and follow the sweet trail to the next note"). By the last note he should already be disrobed. Have a robe on a hanger, with a note that says, “Put this on ... and find me in the bubbles."

As he is doing his romantic strip-love-note-treasure-hunt, you will be waiting in a bubble bath made for two alongside a jazzy romantic CD playing in the background (The soundtrack to The Talented Mr. Ripley has some nice song selections). Have Champagne and strawberries ready by the tub. As your Valentine approaches in his robe, invite him into the Bath of Love. Take it from there and make it a romantic night you both will remember.

Follow up the tub with a nice body massage and cuddle by a roaring fire. To ensure a successful outcome, maintain a respectful and loving attitude towards one another and do activities and romantic activities like these on a regular basis. Remember, this is the time to replenish and reconnect with the one you love. It's the little things you do to make him smile on a regular basis. This is the time to reignite the passion and delve into your true feelings of appreciation and gratitude for the partner you have in your life.

Valentine's Day for Single Guys

This month can sometimes test your inner-strength as a single gay man but don’t let this time of year get you down. Although you may not have someone special in your midst right now; keep your chin up, your head held high, and a heart full of love, for he just may be right around the corner. Remember it isn’t about, Mr. Right-Now, it’s about being patient for Mr. Right. This Valentine’s Day is yours for the taking. And this is the year you give yourself the love you’ve always wanted.

If you do not feel you can handle this day because you are single at the moment, live as if there is a special someone you are sharing this day with. What would you do? Would you indulge in a dinner, perhaps a good movie? Do this for the most important person in your life,  YOU.
When I say “love- yourself," I don’t imply narcissism, I mean the love that moves you from inside, as if you were watching a Hallmark card commercial - tears and all - that’s the love I mean. Love yourself as you expect another to love you. If you know your future partner would do-for-you as you would for him, then why not do it for yourself? You are an important factor in your own happiness and reality, thus you must always be truly happy from within.

If you feel up to it, you may want to get yourself a puppy; adopt a new friend that will take you places and give you unlimited joy. You may end up at a local dog-park and serendipity may introduce you to Mr. Right.

Above all, enjoy this month with a heart full of love and a smile that won’t wash away. This is the month to honor you.
