Alan Turing receives royal pardon

Queen Elizabeth II last week officially granted a royal pardon to computer scientist Alan Turing, who committed suicide in 1954 following a conviction over a relationship with another man

Turing, who famously broke the Enigma code used by Nazi Germany during World War II, was convicted of "gross indecency" in 1952 at a time when consensual sex between same-sex partners was considered a crime under British law.

Manning says military not providing hormone treatment

Chelsea Manning said in a letter released last Friday that the military has not honored her request to begin hormone therapy while incarcerated, despite public assurances to the contrary from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

Manning, who was convicted of violating the Espionage Act last year and is serving a 35-year sentence, accused the military of paying "lip-service" to the request and argues that denying treatment deemed medically necessary constitutes a violation of her rights.

Ecuador to recognize same-sex civil unions

Ecuador will soon recognize same-sex civil unions, President Rafael Correa announced Saturday.

Same-sex couples living in the country, who are barred from marrying or adopting children, will have "the full constitutional right" to register civil unions and have them reported on government-issued documents, said Correa, who met with representatives from Ecuador's LGBT community last week.

Appeals court extends stay of Colo. marriage ruling

A federal appeals court last Thursday extended a stay of last month's ruling against Colorado's marriage equality ban. The court noted similar decisions out of other states as reasons for maintaining the stay, including a ruling from Virginia last week. The stay is likely to remain in place until the Supreme Court hears the case.

Tour de Fat Returns to Denver

New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat is coming to City Park in Denver, Colo. on Saturday, September 6, 2014. The daylong event is free, yet all donations and proceeds from beer and merchandise sales go to Denver-area non-profits. In total the 2013 season raised nearly $536,000, with the Denver stop bringing in $77,017. This year, all funds raised in Denver will go to Bike Denver and The Denver Cruisers.

At Tour de Fat friends, family and neighbors are all invited to come enjoy eclectic entertainment, brewing education, a bicycle revival and even a fashion show of the best Tour de Fat costumes. In the afternoon, the stages heat up with acts like The Handsome Little Devils and Lucius.

The event kicks off with a costumed bicycle parade that winds through city streets. The parade begins and ends in City Park, where the rest of the day’s entertainment shines from musical acts to yo-yo performers, bike contests and even vaudeville acts.

Throughout the day, kids of all ages can ride funky bikes in the bike corral, eat delicious fare, relax in the grass, and participate in games and activities such as a “Thousand Person Dance Contest,” which will determine the winner of a 2014 New Belgium Cruiser Bike. Everyone 21 and older can sample new and classic favorites from New Belgium, including the brewery’s flagship brew, Fat Tire, New Belgium’s year-round offering, Snapshot Wheat, and selections from the acclaimed Lips of Faith series.

No bike? No problem! Tour de Fat is partnering with Denver B-cycle to provide bikes to participants who are missing some wheels. For just $20, people can rent a B-cycle for Tour de Fat. The bike just needs to be returned by midnight on September 6. To take advantage of this deal, purchase an $8 membership at any B-cycle kiosk, before Tour de Fat, using the promotional code 9614. The first 100 people to take a picture with their B-cycle and then post it to Twitter or Facebook, tagging Denver B-cycle, can get a free beer token by showing off the post at the Denver B-cycle tent.

“This is our 15th year of Tour de Fat and it’s been an incredible journey. This really is one of the best ways to spend a Saturday – there isn’t much that can beat the fun that comes with dressing up, riding a bike, drinking beer, listening to music and just having a great day with old and new friends,” said Matt Kowal, New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat Impresario. “There really is no excuse not to experience the magic yourself!”

Books: Colorado Legends & Lore

Colorado is steeped in stories as unique as the people who settled it.

Each wave of exploration and settlement brought new tales to explain the mysteries of this incomparable place. With extreme weather and breathtaking landscapes, it seems only natural that Colorado could play host to UFOs, stripper lightning and the Fountain of Love. From creation myths and rumored Aztec treasure to snow snakes and drunken house flies, professional yarn-spinner Stephanie Waters turns an eye to all of it in her new book Colorado Legends & Lore.

Lambda Legal seeks same-sex spousal benefits for military vets

A lawsuit filed last week by Lambda Legal challenges the Department of Veterans Affairs over its policy to deny certain spousal benefits for same-couples living in states that do not recognize their unions.

The suit argues that current policy violates the Supreme Court decision that struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Federal judge rules for marriage equality in Fla.

Florida's marriage ban was ruled unconstitutional last week by a federal judge who compared the ban to now-defunct laws against interracial marriage.

"When observers look back 50 years from now, the arguments supporting Florida's ban on same-sex marriage, though just as sincerely held, will again seem an obvious pretext for discrimination," Judge Robert Hinkle wrote in his decision, which was stayed pending an expected appeal from Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Summer Denver Restaurant Week Starts Saturday, August 23-29

The Mile High City’s largest culinary event – Denver Restaurant Week (DRW) – will kick off on Saturday August 23, 2014, offering seven days of dining delight at more than 200 restaurants. During DRW, which runs August 23-29, participating restaurants will offer tantalizing, multi-course dinners for the fixed price of $30 (tax and tip not included).

This is the first summer version of the event. “Summer restaurant week offers many new features, including the ability to have outdoor dining and a variety of fresh, locally-sourced produce and seasonal items on the menu,” said Richard Scharf, president & CEO of VISIT DENVER, organizer of the event.

Menus are listed by cuisine and by neighborhood. Diners can also see which restaurants offer vegetarian options. “Planning is an important part of restaurant week,” Scharf said. “Some restaurants will fill up early at prime dining times, but there are many off-peak dining times that remain available, and of course, we encourage diners to experiment and try new restaurants.” The list of restaurants and menus will be frequently updated, so diners should check the website often.

Many of the participating restaurants offer expanded outdoor seating, which will make it even easier to get reservations this year. Still, Scharf encouraged diners to get on the website and make reservations early. “And please honor your reservations,” he said. “One of the most frustrating things about the event is when people make a reservation, and don’t show up, denying other diners that time slot. Don’t be a no-show! Please notify the restaurant if your plans change so they can fill that table,” Scharf said.

Super PAC is spending big to defend pro-LGBT Republicans

The Republican-led group American Unity plans to spend at least $2 million by Election Day to support pro-LGBT congressional candidates. Founded by billionaire Paul Singer, the super PAC has already spent $700,000 defending pro-LGBT Republicans including U.S. Reps. Richard Hanna of New York and Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania. The group is also supporting Richard Tisei, who is running for a U.S. House seat in Massachusetts.

"What American Unity PAC is committed to doing is ensuring that as these courageous elected officials follow their conscience and do the right thing, that there is a political network in place that's there to defend them," senior adviser Jeff Cook-McCormac said.

The Gay Vegans Restaurant review: Modern Love in Omaha

By Dan Hanley

I was able to stop in Omaha on my way back from Michigan and boy am I glad I did. The newest (I think) vegan restaurant in the U.S., Modern Love, opened on August 5th right in the middle of beef country. And I got to go!

Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a well-known name in the vegan and foodie communities. She created Post Punk Kitchen and is the author of several incredible vegan cookbooks, including one of my all-time favorites, "Vegan Brunch". She is the chef/owner of Modern Love, and knowing how many incredible meals Mike has made from her cookbooks, I just had to dine there while in Omaha. To be honest, it's the only reason I decided to make Omaha a stopping point on my way home.

Modern Love is located just a few minutes drive west of downtown Omaha. I had an airbnb in the north part of downtown and it took me ten minutes driving. As I parked I practically exploded with excitement. I am not a food blogger or recipe creator or anything like that, but I sure do love amazing vegan food. And I just knew that my world was about to be rocked.

Modern Love is cute. And clean. And packed. It seats about 30 - 40 and has an open kitchen. The hostess was kind and seated me immediately. A friendly face upon arrival is always nice.
