Unprecedented LGBT Political Power on Display at Democratic National Convention

LGBT political power is stronger and more visible than ever – with an unprecedented number of LGBT candidates this election cycle, and a robust presence of LGBT elected officials at the Democratic National Convention. To understand the impact, the Victory Fund will hold a telephone press conference with US Representatives Sean Patrick Maloney and Mark Takano, and former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, to discuss the impact LGBT elected officials have on debates, policy and the votes of their straight colleagues.

The Victory Fund will also unveil new research from a survey of 2400 state lawmakers showing straight lawmakers who vote on pro-LGBT legislation are heavily influenced by their LGBT lawmaker colleagues. The research demonstrates the importance of LGBT representation in advancing equality.

Log Cabin Republican President Denounces Most Anti-LGBT GOP Platform In History

Watch for yourself as Gregory Angelo lashes out at his own party for their anti-LGBT platform –which in his own words is "the most anti-LGBT platform in history.” Aired originally on ABC Go.

Log Cabin Republicans to GOP Platform Committee in USA Today: SAD!

Log Cabin Republicans has placed a full-page ad in USA Today calling out the GOP Platform Committee for drafting the most anti-LGBT platform in the Republican Party’s 162-year history. The ad ran yesterday in the Cleveland edition of the largest newspaper in the United States and will be available in most every hotel speakers, Delegates, and credentialed guests will be staying at during the Republican National Convention.

“Response from allies to our reaction in the wake of the drafting of this vitriolic anti-LGBT platform has been nothing short of staggering,” Log Cabin Republicans President Gregory T. Angelo stated. “The email sent to our members last week propelled Log Cabin Republicans to the top trend on Facebook for more than two days, and now holds the record as the highest-grossing single fundraising appeal this organization has ever sent. But this was fundraising with a purpose—I’m pleased to share that every last cent donated to Log Cabin Republicans via last week’s email has been spent on this project. This unprecedented support is representative of the GOP I know, and this is the GOP our members want to see.”

The provocative advertisement reads, “LOSERS! MORONS! SAD! No, these aren’t tweets from Donald Trump. This is what common-sense conservatives are saying about the most anti-LGBT platform the Republican Party has ever had. GOP Platform Committee: Out of touch, out of line, and out of step with 61% of young Republicans who favor same-sex marriage.”

“It’s my hope this advertisement will be a wake-up call to the intransigent and ancient voices on the GOP Platform Committee that marriage equality is the law of the land, gay families are a part of the fabric of America, and LGBT Republicans have an important role to play in growing the Party,” Angelo concluded.

Mexico’s Premier LGBT destination to host major LGBT events in 2016 and 2017

Puerto Vallarta, long-celebrated as the preferred vacation destination for the LGBT community in Mexico, and the first city in Mexico to be granted Gay Travel Approved status by GayTravel.com, will once again host Latin Fever, a dance music festival taking place during the US’ Thanksgiving weekend November 27th thru November 30th, 2016.

In addition, Gayribbean's Mexican Riviera Cruise Ruby Princess will be coming to Puerto Vallarta from November 5-12, NYE PVR 2017 will be held from December 29th. 2016 to Jan 1st. 2017; Beef Dip Bear Week from January 29th to February 5th, 2017; Mardi Gras from February 28th. 2017 and Memorial Day Weekend will once again see Vallarta Pride.

Brought into the tourism spotlight by celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Tennessee Williams, Puerto Vallarta organically grew to become North America's favorite LGBT winter beach destination and is now home to Mexico’s only beach gayborhood in its Zona Romantica. Home to a broad array of gay bars and nightclubs, gay-owned restaurants, hotels, stores, services, and entertainment, la Zona Romantica is in the center of the city’s Downtown. In addition, hotels across the city, such as Costa Sur Resort & Spa and Hotel San Marino are T.A.G. Certified and members of the IGLTA, putting Puerto Vallarta in a league of its own.

In recent years, the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, the entity responsible for promoting the destination in the US and Canada has partnered with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, GMHC and the International Gay Lesbian Travel Association to promote the destination to the LGBT market. In 2014, Puerto Vallarta became the first Mexican destination to participate in a World Pride with its Noche Alegre event during the World Pride celebrations in Toronto. And in 2015 the tourism board became the first destination to sponsor the Human Rights Campaign on a national level.

LGBTQ Advocates Decry Donald Trump’s Selection of Indiana Governor Mike Pence as Vice Presidential Running Mate

The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund is condemning Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s selection of Governor Mike Pence of Indiana as his vice presidential running mate.

“In selecting Mike Pence, Donald Trump has picked a vice-presidential running mate who is best-known for a law that was so extremely anti-LGBTQ that businesses, organizations and major events threatened to flee Indiana in droves. One can only imagine what sort of impact this type of person might have on the lives of LGBTQ people across the country, and on our nation's economy and future,” said Russell Roybal, Deputy Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund.

AIDS Walk Colorado - AIDS Memorial Quilt Requests

The AIDS Memorial Quilt, founded in 1987, is a powerful tool for use in the prevention
of new HIV infections. As the largest ongoing community arts project in the world,
The Quilt celebrates the lives of real people who were loved and lost to HIV/AIDS.

Each person is remembered on a 6-foot stretch of fabric called a panel.
Panels are created by the person’s family and friends who use personal artifacts and clothing to honor their loved one. Eight panels are then sewn together to create a 12-foot square block. There are over 47,000 panels that comprise the ever-growing AIDS Memorial Quilt.

As a reminder to the world that the AIDS epidemic is not over, Colorado AIDS Project brings several quilt blocks to Denver each year for public display. Each of these blocks will be displayed at Cheesman Park on August 20th as part of the 29th annual AIDS Walk Colorado.

If you would like to request a particular panel memorializing someone you know
to be brought to Denver, please make a written request to Colorado AIDS Project by June 31st.

Please include the following information with your request: Person remembered on the quilt, Person who created the quilt panel, Quilt block number if known. Click here to download a Quilt Panel Request Form.

Donald Trump’s Selection of Governor Mike Pence “Completes a Trifecta of Hate on LGBT Rights”

Equality Forum, the nation’s premier lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights summit, called Donald Trump’s announcement of Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his vice-presidential running mate “deeply troubling for LGBT Americans.”

“The selection of anti-gay crusader Gov. Mike Pence, along with the homophobic Republican party platform and a deafening silence on the LGBT Equality Act completes a trifecta of hate from Donald Trump on LGBT rights,” said Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director, Equality Forum. “Although Trump claims he’s a ‘friend’ of the LGBT community, his rhetoric is in direct contrast to his actions which are deeply troubling and sends chills down the backs of 20 million LGBT Americans and to those who believe in civil rights for all citizens.”

Governor Mike Pence has a long history of opposing the rights of LGBT people. During his time in Congress, Pence co-sponsored a constitutional amendment opposing the rights of same-sex couples to marry, and voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), hate crimes legislation protecting LGBT people and repeal of the military’s discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In March 2015, Governor Pence signed a bill into law permitting business owners in Indiana to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers due to their religious beliefs. The bill was widely condemned by athletes, business owners and corporate America, leading to public condemnation and business pulling out projects in the state because of the bill’s discriminatory nature.
