DNC Statement on 5th Anniversary of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repeal

DNC LGBT Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes released the following statement:

“In the five years since Congress repealed the discriminatory Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, we’ve made great strides in expanding and protecting the rights of the LGBT community in the United States, but we still have further to go. More than 13,000 service members were discharged under DADT, denying those men and women the opportunity to serve our nation, and diminishing the strength of our armed forces in the process. By repealing the policy, we no longer treat members of the LGBT community as second-class citizens in our armed forces, and we are a stronger nation for it – both militarily and morally.

“Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine want to build on that progress. They believe in standing up for the LGBT community, ending discrimination, and fighting for our full rights. Donald Trump and his running mate, Mike Pence, would only drag us backwards on LGBT rights. They both support North Carolina’s discriminatory HB2 ‘bathroom bill,’ and as governor, Pence signed a so-called ‘religious freedom’ bill into law, which threatened to allow businesses to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. We need to elect a president and vice president who will treat members of the LGBT community as full citizens, and who will fight to protect the civil rights of all Americans.”

Travel: Glamorous Headdress Ball Set for Oct. 27 in Key West

Revelers hoping to make "headlines" in Key West can take center stage Thursday, Oct. 27, at the 34th annual Headdress Ball.

The glamorous gala is to be held under a gigantic tent at Key West's Truman Waterfront, located at the end of Southard Street beyond Truman Annex.

Entrants wearing elaborate masks, cowls, bonnets and other headgear -- many decorated with feathers, sequins and unexpected or bizarre accessories -- are to vie for cash prizes at the head-turning event. Some headdresses in past years have featured moving parts, while others tower far taller than their wearers.

The first-place winner takes home $3,000. Second prize is $1,000 and the third-place finisher is to receive $500.

Scheduled in conjunction with the annual Fantasy Fest masking and costuming celebration, the ball is billed as the festival's premier gay and lesbian event.

Bette Midler's Iconic Debut, 'The Divine Miss M,' Remastered For A New Deluxe Edition

Rhino Records will revisit the early days of Bette Midler's incredible career with a deluxe version of her iconic 1972 debut album, The Divine Miss M. Midler will also make a "Divine" appearance this fall as a mentor for Team Blake on Season 11 of NBC's hit television series The Voice which premieres on September 19.
THE DIVINE MISS M: DELUXE EDITION will be available on October 21 as a 2-CD set that includes the remastered album, plus a bonus disc of singles, outtakes and demos, as well as new liner notes written by Midler. The album will also be released digitally as well as in 1-LP vinyl format, which will feature the remastered original album and original album artwork.
In the liner notes that accompany this new collection, Midler recalls the origin of her nickname: "I began being called The Divine Miss M around 1969, when I made my first appearance at the Continental Baths, a gay bath house located in the basement of the Ansonia Hotel, at Broadway and 74th Street in New York. My best friend, Bill Hennessy, a hairdresser I met on Fiddler on the Roof, called me that for years. It was my first night at the Baths, and before I went on, the owner, Steven Ostrow, stuck his head into the dressing room and asked how I wanted to be introduced. I said, 'Just tell them I'm divine!' And that's how it started."

Denver Actors Fund Lineup for Miscast 2016

“Miscast" is an opportunity for some of the local theatre community’s top performers to sing songs and act out scenes they would never … ever! … get cast to perform on a legitimate stage. This popular tradition returns for one night only at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 26, as a benefit for the Denver Actors Fund at the Town Hall Arts Center, 2450 Main St., Littleton, CO 80120. Tickets are $20 (plus fees if ordered online) and are available at 303-794-2787 or online at townhallartscenter.org.

The lineup for "Miscast 2016," a community-wide benefit for the Denver Actors Fund, has just been announced - and the cast list is enough to make any local director envious. And, this year, funnyman Eric Mather (The Drunken Bachelor Talk Show) will join third-year co-host Damon Guerrasio (Curious Theatre's Water by the Spoonful) in leading the silliness.

The Feline Fix - Caring for Colorado's Community Cats

More than 20,000 cats are euthanized annually in Colorado simply because there are not enough homes for them all. Unfortunately, we can't simply adopt our way out of the problem.

An unaltered female cat, tame or feral, may become pregnant as early as five months of age and bear two to three litters per year for her entire life; which for a feral cat is roughly five years.

The purpose of Divine Feline and it's clinic, The Feline Fix, is to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless cats and to promote the health and welfare of all cats, feral and tame, through the practice of providing quality and affordable spay and neuter services and the practice of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).
