Print all In new window Miami Beach Pride Welcomed 130,000+ from around the world

A quartet of Pride Marshals greeted a huge crowd of proud revelers who turned out throughout the weekend for the 9th Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade and Festival presented by Celebrity Cruises. The three-day Pride weekend, which started on Friday, April 7, with a poolside VIP reception at the W South Beach hotel and transitioned into a full-day beach party on Saturday before culminating with the Pride parade and festival on Sunday, saw a record 135,000-plus come out for the weekend’s festivities. The turnout is especially significant for the “billion dollar sandbar” of 92,000 residents as it shows how the popularity of the expanded, three-day celebration has grown exponentially in such a short amount of time, said Pride Board Chairman Mark Fernandes.

“It always leaves a huge impression on me to see the whole community come together as one to celebrate Pride,” said Dave Cook, executive director of Pride. “It’s important to recognize our community’s vast range of diversity and Pride’s commitment to inclusion. Judging by the people who came out as spectators, participants or volunteers, I can enthusiastically say Pride succeeded in that goal once again this year.”

New video series ‘BreakthroughU’ features gender-nonconforming and LGBTQ puppets and puppeteer

A new video series, “BreakthroughU,” is tackling complicated social issues, like gender-based violence, intersectionality* and culture change, issues that are at the heart of the work that Breakthrough has been doing for over 17 years. The videos employ an unusual approach — puppets.

A cast of rainbow-colored puppets represents a range of identities, from a gay Latino guy with an abusive boyfriend to a gender-nonconforming person struggling to find a restroom. The videos are designed to help high school and college students discuss tough subjects with friends and family members and find ways to challenge and transform harmful attitudes and culture when they encounter it. Students who grew up on Sesame Street will recognize the puppets as a nostalgic, familiar form. But instead of teaching the ABCs, characters break down issues and ideas that contribute to gender-based violence.

The videos explore scenarios dealing with gender-based discrimination and violence as they commonly occur in campus life. By playing out scenarios, the videos address issues such as intimate partner violence (in heterosexual and LGBTQ couples); non-consensual image sharing; sexual harassment; discrimination against gender-nonconforming and transgender people; and hypermasculinity and gender policing.

“These practices are explored in order to connect the dots between the culture we learn, practice and create, the gender norms that perpetuate this culture, and the individual and collective power we all have to challenge and transform culture and create change in our communities,” said Ishita Srivastava, producer and deputy director of programs at Breakthrough.

Breakthrough’s network of campus activists have encountered barriers to changing the culture around gender. “Talking to someone who promotes toxic or threatening expectations about gender can prove befuddling, especially when the behavior is so subtle it’s almost impossible to detect or articulate,” said Srivastava. “‘BreakthroughU’ allows puppets to do the heavy lifting, both in modeling strategies to challenge and transform harmful dynamics and explaining the concepts as a scaffolding to understand them.”

Puppeteers involved in the Breakthrough video series are the best in their industry, coming from Sesame Street and Avenue Q. One puppeteer, Gabriel Rodriguez, who is gender nonconforming, had their first opportunity to portray a character with nonbinary gender.

“I don’t know what a gender is, but I feel like I have one. And I know it isn’t boy, and I know it isn’t girl. But it’s here. It is where I belong. It is my home, this in-between,” said Rodriguez.

The video series will also connect viewers to Breakthrough’s action hotline, which is a one-on-one coaching and mentoring resource for students who want to challenge gender norms and change the culture of gender-based violence in their campus communities.

National LGBTQ Task Force Responds to Sean Spicer

Yesterday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer made comments denying Hitler's use of chemical weapons when referencing Assad and the people of Syria.

"We are outraged by White House press secretary Sean Spicer's denial of Hitler's use of chemical weapons, which in fact contributed to the death of over 6 million Jews and others through the use of gas chambers. His comments are in tandem with Holocaust deniers. To add insult to injury, these reprehensible comments were made as Jewish communities across the country and world gather to celebrate Passover. It was an astonishingly ignorant and harmful statement to make.

"We denounce all comparisons that invoke the painful legacies of trauma and brutality in an attempt to make a political point. We continue to be deeply offended, angry, and disgusted by the actions of Trump's Administration. No apology can erase these indignities from our memories. On the contrary, they fuel our commitment to stand together with others for truth and justice," said Rea Carey, National LGBTQ Task Force Executive Director.

Puerto Vallarta Strengthens its Commitment to the LGBT Community

As the celebration of Vallarta Pride (May 17-28), Puerto Vallarta’s annual LGBTQ festival approaches, the city further expands its commitment to its LGBTQ visitors and community with multiple initiatives across the city including the opening of a Gender Equality Office and sensitivity training for local businesses.

Sponsored by the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, “Certified Member LGBT,” is a 12-course training program developed by the Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) and Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) for local hoteliers and tour operators and is part of the country’s overall initiative to “strengthen LGBT offerings in the destination with quality, inclusive and respectful products and service.” The class will be given on May 25th.

Puerto Vallarta Mayor Arturo Dávalos Peña started the destination’s current initiatives last week by inaugurating a new government office specializing in LGBTQ issues. The Office of Gender Equality, located in the Gayborhood of the Zona Romantica, will be a safe place for lesbian, gay, transsexual, bisexual, transgender, and intersexual communities residing in or visiting the city. The mayor expressed that the Office of Gender Equality is another key initiative in the city’s commitment to ensure Puerto Vallarta continues to be a friendly and welcoming destination, for which “we have already taken very important steps, such as the establishment of same-sex marriages that became legal in March of last year.”

Peter Silberman - Impermanence at The Glass House | Part Four: "Maya"

Peter Silberman has unveiled the fourth in a series of intimate sessions, captured across a single day at architect Philip Johnson’s Glass House museum.

Impermanence at the Glass House” is a performance film in six parts by Derrick Belcham, featuring dancers Rebecca Margolick and Stephanie Crousillat. The film follows the arc of Impermanence, with "Maya" following on from “Karuna”, "New York" and "Gone Beyond."

From director Derrick Belcham: “It is rare to find a project in which each element is a person, practice and aesthetic that I love completely.  The sound of Peter’s performance reflecting off the surfaces and enclosures, Rebecca and Stephanie’s spatial relationship with the architecture of the Glass House, the visual reflection of the House itself, the exchange of words and chords with the bodies of the dancers augmented by Natasha Takemoto and Joy Wolcott’s perfectly-toned garments created a beautiful world to explore with the camera.  These dynamic partnerships allowed for theater-level exploration as the events were captured in a single take and single shot.”

Picture
By David Smith

With World OutGames Miami 2017 coming up in just a few short weeks and the Gay Games Paris 2018 a little over a year away. Many athletes are starting to think about how they can best prepare and train to achieve their personal best on and off the field.

If you’re investing the money and time for the trip to Miami and onto Paris, or any other big sporting event; be sure to invest in your own training, fitness and well being as an athlete. When you arrive in Miami and in Paris and get ready to compete, don’t you want to be there feeling like you’re investment was worth it? Better yet, feel like all your hard work paid off! There’s no greater feeling than that.

Sports’ training doesn’t just take place on the field (or court, pool, track, etc.). What you do off the field can have just as much of an impact. Improving your overall fitness level, eating habits and attitude by adopting a program that is more specific to your sport will not only help you prevent injuries but you will develop conditioning, strength, stamina and balance and mental readiness you will need to arrive ready to succeed in Miami or Paris. You might even look good and ready for the beach too! Most importantly, you will be as ready as ever to take on the competition and accomplish your goals.

That’s what being a champion is all about!
