NMAC Announces 2018 Youth Initiative

NMAC has opened the eighth cycle of the Youth Initiative program to train future leaders in the fight against the HIV epidemic. The seven-month program is open to applicants ages 18-25. Youth living with HIV or on PrEP, LGBTQ, youth of color, and young cis & trans women are particularly encouraged to apply. For more information or to apply, visit the NMAC website. Applications are due by April 10.

The Youth Initiative provides unique leadership and learning opportunities through online webinars, peer-to-peer networking, and advocacy training. Youth Scholars will also have the opportunity to be paired with a mentor to support their success throughout the program and will be able to attend a special training session at the U.S. Conference on AIDS (USCA) in Orlando, FL, in September.

“NMAC is committed to building the new generation of leaders for the HIV movement,” said Paul Kawata, NMAC’s Executive Director. “The Youth Initiative identifies and trains 30 young scholars each year to engage in their local communities and work to address the epidemic and advocate for local people living with and impacted by HIV locally. That is how we make lasting and positive change: by engaging on the local level all across the country.”

“Young people are not only the next wave of leaders in the HIV movement, but are essential leaders today,” said Marc Meachem, Head of External Affairs at ViiV Healthcare. “The Youth Initiative helps young leaders sharpen their tools, learn from one another, and be supported as they take on bold new projects and roles in the fight against HIV. We are proud to support the Youth Initiative for the eighth year as young people continue to push the movement forward.”

“We’ve seen in recent weeks what energized activist youth can accomplish,” said Linda Scruggs, Director of NMAC’s Leadership Pipeline program, which operates the Youth Initiative. “The Youth Initiative taps engages up-and-coming leaders in the HIV movement and empowers them to take the reins as long-term leaders begin to step away from the field. We want to ensure that the next generation of HIV leaders has the tools they need to succeed.”

The Youth Initiative is supported by ViiV Healthcare, the Magic Johnson Foundation, and Advocates for Youth.

Despite having had thirteen years of experience working in financial services, the Debt Free Guys were financial messes. They were two thirty-something financial services professionals with $51,000 of combined credit card debt, living in a basement apartment. ACLU of Colorado: Existence is not a Crime

By Nathan Woodliff-Stanley, Executive Director, ACLU of Colorado

Criminalization of homelessness in Colorado has not gone away. If anything, it has gotten worse.

Communities in Colorado have passed more than 350 ordinances criminalizing nearly everything that a person who is homeless needs to do to survive, including asking for charity, seeking food, sitting, sleeping or resting pretty much anywhere, from a public bench to their own parked car.

Tell the House Local Government Committee to end criminalization of homelessness by supporting the Right to Rest Act.

These measures have nothing to do with public safety, they waste taxpayer dollars, and they fill our courts and jails with people who don't deserve to be there. They do nothing to address the actual causes of homelessness – just criminalize it, hide it from sight, or drive it somewhere else.

On Wednesday, March 14, the House Local Government Committee will vote on the Right to Rest Act, a bill to ensure that all people, regardless of their economic circumstances or social status, have the right to exist in public places without fear of being ticketed, harassed, or arrested.

The solution to homelessness and poverty is not criminalization.

Please contact the House Local Government Committee today and urge them to support the Right to Rest Act.

CLGS: Join Us in Signing the Nashville 2.0 Statement!

By Rev. Dr. Roland Stringfellow, Coordinator, The CLGS African American Roundtable & Bernard Schlager PhD, Executive Director, CLGS

We are writing to invite you to sign the Nashville 2.0 Statement, a document written in response to the Nashville Statement: A Coalition for Biblical Sexuality which was published in August 2017 by a group a conservative Christian clergy and lay leaders to condemn sexual orientations and gender expressions that are other than heterosexual or cisgender. As members of the staff of the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion (CLGS), we felt called to write the Nashville 2.0 Statement because we believe that a progressive Christian response to the original statement can serve to testify to the all-inclusive love of the Divine who calls us to value the wonderful diversity of all creation.

We invite people of all faith traditions to consider signing the statement as a sign of solidarity and support for this message of inclusion based in faith.

Please email Rev. Roland Stringfellow if you would like to add your name as a signer to the Nashville 2.0 Statement. Include your name (as you would like it to appear on the document) and whatever titles and organization affiliations you would like to follow your name.

Our goal is to have at least 50 people sign the statement by 22 March 2018 when the CLGS African American Roundtable opens its sixth Souls A' Fire Conference which will run from 22-25 March 2018 in in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Gay Vegans: Vote With Your Wallet

By Dan Hanley

I played around with the title of this post for a bit.

I was about to go with “Support vegan companies”. Then I remembered that not all vegan companies are aligned with my values. The list goes much bigger when one includes companies that simply offer vegan products, as opposed to being an all vegan company.

It’s not always easy to stay informed on whether or not the company that sells your favorite ice cream, toothpaste or fresh vegetables is aligned as closely as possible with who you are as a person. I have been trying to do this almost my entire life and I recently saw an updated list of companies that test and animals and was surprised to see two products that I use. The self-education never ends!

I’d also like to say that my expectations are higher for companies now than they used to be. I want companies I support to do the right thing and let folks know they’re doing it. I would also like companies to speak out for the right thing.

The whole process of knowledge begins with us asking the questions. It begins with you asking the questions.

The internet is a good place to start. If you are unaware of how your favorite company is or isn’t aligned with who you are as a person, Google their name with your cause. Example is “Does Gardein support LGBTQ employees?”. You will most likely have lots of information in a second. Of course this is a wide open question, and it will catch and pro or con stories out there.

You can also directly email or call the company, or ask on their Facebook page or Twitter feed.

Many advocacy groups keep lists of companies that do or do not support their cause.

My hope is that this post encourages you to ask questions. I also hope that your favorite companies are indeed aligned with you and your beliefs. What I am learning is that these policies of support or not change, and many companies are bought and sold and that could change things.

Good luck. Let me know if I can help.

Greg Berlanti's film follows the story of Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), a teenage boy who has to come out to his friends and family while also trying to uncover the identity of his anonymous crush, has already garnered near universal critical and social acclaim.

Among the enthusiastic responses, Screen Rant called it "an instant modern classic". We believe it is a very special movie and we want to give audiences a chance to discover that for themselves, which is why we are offering a special sneak preview on Saturday."

People For the American Way: Leaked Memo on HUD Removal of Anti-Discrimination Language From Mission Statement Shows HUD is Abandoning its Key Purposes and Trying to Hide Agency Changes

Just days after People For the American Way filed suit against the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Justice Department to force the agencies to release documents about reported actions they have taken to remove protections from LGBTQ people, HuffPost reported on a leaked memo showing that HUD plans to remove anti-discrimination language from its mission statement.

In response to yesterday's news, People For the American Way’s Diallo Brooks, Senior Director of Outreach and Public Engagement, issued the following statement:

"The news about Ben Carson’s plan to strip from its mission statement HUD’s objective to help build communities that are 'inclusive’ and ‘free from discrimination’ contradicts our nation’s purpose in creating the department and passing fair housing laws. The 1968 Fair Housing Act specifically charged the HUD secretary with administering the law, created a new assistant secretary position devoted to fair housing, and directed HUD to administer all its programs in a manner “affirmatively to further” fair housing and non-discrimination. This proposed change flies in the face of these mandates.

"This revelation also provides yet more evidence that Trump administration HUD officials are hiding discriminatory policy changes from the public. Earlier this week, PFAW filed suit against HUD concerning its removal of important programs helping LGBTQ homeless people from HUD’s website after months of waiting for an answer to our FOIA requests for documents without receiving any agency decision explaining who ordered the removal, why, and what else was covered.

“Today, the agency again releases no information about an important planned change, and only a leak from an unknown source provides the American people with any information about who is ordering this change and why.

"We call on HUD to immediately release the complete leaked memo, to cancel plans to make this damaging change to its mission statement, and to release the information we have now had to ask for in court concerning efforts to write LGBTQ people out of federal agency programs and activities.”
