OUT on VOD: Denial

Before Christine Hallquist was running for Governor of Vermont, she was David Hallquist, the CEO of the largest locally owned electric utility in Vermont. A self-described “closet environmentalist” Hallquist is dedicated to addressing the way electricity use in America contributes to climate change. But his mission is balanced with the utility’s charge to provide affordable and reliable service. For Hallquist, increasing the efficiency of the grid is the only meaningful route to merging these priorities.

He implements one of the country’s first ‘smart’ grids, decreasing outages, increasing the capacity for renewable sources and building a national reputation as an energy pioneer. Resistance, however, comes in many forms – traditionalists balk at the renewable intermittency, solar and wind advocates think Hallquist is dragging his feet, and the public fears that ‘smart’ meters on their homes will send private information about their energy use to the government.

As Hallquist struggles to build the kind of transparent company whose honest approach can get stakeholders to accept the realities of how we generate and deliver electricity, he realizes he must apply that same transparency to his personal life and reveals to his son a lifelong secret. Dave Hallquist, who presents as a chainsaw-wielding, hard hat-wearing CEO in a male-dominated industry is a woman inside.

Now, Derek’s family must face facts that feel far more immediate than the melting of the polar ice caps and denial emerges as a common theme linking all of these issues. Ultimately the personal and the societal come together as Derek learns that his father, newly named Christine, is still indeed his father – and that Christine’s unique perspective as the first American Transgender CEO to transition in office, may be just the what the limiting, binary worldview on energy and the environment needs.

Log Cabin Republicans Announces Jerri Ann Henry as New Executive Director

Today the Log Cabin Republicans and Liberty Education Forum National Boards of Directors announced the appointment of Jerri Ann Henry as the organizations’ new Executive Director.

“Log Cabin Republicans have a rich history of grassroots activism and a legacy of great leaders, and there is no other organization better suited to offer solutions to today’s challenging political environment than us,” Henry stated. “I’m humbled to step into this leadership role, and I don’t take it lightly — I believe my experience with the Republican Party and LGBTQ community, combined with this incredible team will allow us to build a strong, effective movement and grow the Republican Party of the future.”

Henry is a leading communications and messaging strategist with a long career in grassroots activism, digital campaigns and coalition building. She managed Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry leading into the Obergefell Supreme Court decision, the Platform Reform campaign during the 2016 election cycle, and has served in leadership positions on numerous policy and Republican congressional campaigns.

During the last decade in Washington D.C., Henry has developed digital listening and engagement tools for many corporate and non-profit organizations. Her unique approach to fully integrated digital activism, combined with a strong understanding of right-of-center messaging on difficult issues led to her recognition as a leader within the industry. She has been recognized as a Rising Star by Campaigns & Elections and a Future 40 Leader by Maverick PAC.

In addition, Henry has served in leadership positions for a number of organizations including Maverick PAC, Young Republicans of Alexandria, Women’s Public Leadership Network (WPLN), the National Federation of Republican Women, the Texas State Society and others. She is a native of Dallas, Texas and a graduate of Texas A&M University. Currently Ms. Henry, her wife, and their dog live in Alexandria, VA where they are active in the local community.

“The Log Cabin Republicans Board of Directors was inundated with accomplished individuals eager to lend their talents to the organization, and Jerri Ann Henry was the Board of Directors’ unanimous choice,” Log Cabin Republicans Chairman Sarah Longwell stated. “I look forward to working with her to continue our mission making the conservative case for LGBT equality throughout the United States.”

“Bringing Jerri Ann Henry on-board as the new chief executive of Liberty Education Forum is a tremendous opportunity for us to continue our mission to educate people on issues of importance to the LGBT community,” Liberty Education Forum Chairman Tom Wahl, Jr. said. “Now, more than ever, at this critical moment in our history it is necessary to advocate for LGBT Americans among conservatives and people of faith. The LEF Board of Directors joins me in welcoming her insights, perspective, and leadership.”

“As someone who has known Jerri Ann Henry for years, I couldn’t be more pleased to see the Log Cabin Republicans and Liberty Education Forum Boards of Directors have chosen her to continue the proud legacy of both organizations into the future,” the organizations’ Immediate Past President Gregory T. Angelo remarked. “After achieving the historic firsts of full participation at the Conservative Political Action Conference, formal recognition from the Republican National Committee, and public commendation of Log Cabin Republicans from a sitting Republican president during my tenure, the future looks bright for Log Cabin Republicans; I wish Ms. Henry all the best as she continues to advance an inclusive, winning strategy.”

The Gay Vegans: A Healthy Addition - Beets

By Dan Hanley

I have always loved beets.

On my journey to eating more whole foods and to embrace a more healthy lifestyle, during my last grocery outing I bought more fresh veggies than processed food. Don’t get me wrong, I love processed foods. And at 51, I am once again trying to fit them in as a treat and not part of my daily eating ritual.

The fresh veggies I purchased included beets with the greens still attached. I knew beet greens were good, and was reminded of how delicious they are when I cooked them up as a side for dinner. Simple really, just a little oil, salt, pepper and garlic and voila!

With the beets themselves, I cut them up and steamed them and added them to a few dinners during the week. Super easy and in my readings I am learning that beets can do my body good.

Check them out next time you’re in the market. In southern California you can also almost always find then at a local farmers market.

If you have a favorite beet recipe, I would love to know about it!

MAP: Raising Awareness of Transgender People

This week is Transgender Awareness Week, an important week for LGBT people and allies to lift up the transgender community and raise awareness of the issues facing transgender people and their families.

Despite rising visibility, unprecedented advocacy, and changing public opinion, stigma, discrimination, and even violence are still major threats, particularly for transgender women, transgender people of color, and low-income transgender people. Just last month The New York Times reported that the Trump Administration is preparing to redefine the term “sex” for the purposes of several federal agencies.

This radical redefinition is out of step with science, medicine and the law—and it is intended to not only to eliminate protections for transgender and intersex people, but to stop recognizing transgender and intersex people all together. This would create even more barriers to accessing the resources, protections and care transgender people need to thrive.

That’s why Transgender Awareness Week is such an important opportunity to advance understanding of transgender people, and MAP has the resources you need to start the conversation.

MAP, in partnership with organizations including the National Center for Transgender Equality, Transgender Law Center, GLSEN, the Equality Federation, and Freedom for All Americans, has developed resources offering an overview into the lives of transgender people. From hard-hitting ads that show the real harms and dangers facing transgender people, to MAP's strategic Talking About series conversation guides to help supporters talk about these issues, to in-depth policy reports and detailed equality maps about the legal landscape and the impact on transgender youth and adults—these resources will facilitate critical conversations through Transgender Awareness Week and beyond.

UK's Warwick Rowers 10th Anniversary Calendar Launches Today!

The world renowned Warwick Rowers are back in the buff with a very special tenth anniversary edition of their cheeky male nude charity calendar.

The boys' naked devotion to LGBT rights and gender equality over the last ten years has seen them win seven National Calendar Awards in London, make live appearances in the US, Italy and Australia, and feature regularly in global media such as BUZZFEED, HUFFINGTON POST, THE TIMES.

Most significantly, their long-running success has enabled the plucky university athletes to set up and fund Sport Allies a registered charity devoted to promoting LGBT rights and gender equality through sport. Among other achievements, Sport Allies is currently working with London Film School and SKY Sports, the UK's biggest sports TV platform, to create viral messaging aimed at highlighting the importance of inclusion in sport.

The rowers are particularly honored to welcome special guest star Robbie Manson to the calendar. A two-time Olympic athlete from New Zealand, Robbie holds the world record for men's single sculling, making him officially the fastest rower on the planet. Robbie, who came out as gay in 2014, says, "As an LGBT athlete, I value the straight ally message of the Warwick Rowers. They prove you don't have to be a gay or female athlete to believe passionately that sport should be for everyone, and that sport can show leadership in promoting equality. So when the guys invited me to join them in their tenth anniversary calendar, I got on a plane!"

Nice To See StevieB: 11 Years of StevieB

By StevieB

Seriously, eleven years? Today makes eleven years I have been blogging.

It boggles my mind how different one person can be in eleven years. My drives, goals, and desires have really no similarities to the thirty-five year old who started blogging. I have had six cars, three longterm relationships, many casual boyfriends, three dogs, and one blog. One blog to unite them all.

Yes, I spend to much time writing papers about third wave Feminists and too little time blogging; I guess I should just post my term papers. But, I feel that will actually make my blog even less readable. And it is pretty damn un-read as it is.

Let's just cheer that I am having a eleven year anniversary as a blogger. Not many humans can actually say this. Mostly because blogging died about six years ago.
