Incoming House Speaker John Boehner (pictured) and other leading Republicans have signed on to a letter protesting the inclusion of some top anti-gay organizations on a list of hate groups compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Signatories said they supported the groups' free speech rights, but SPLC officials countered that groups such as the Family Research Council go too far when they use falsehoods to demonize gays and lesbians.
