Uganda government won’t support anti-homosexuality bill
Uganda’s
parliament is set to debate a bill that would impose harsh penalties on
homosexuals, but
President Yoweri Museveni’s government does not support the measure,
making it unclear whether
the legislation will be enacted, according to this report. The measure’s
proponents say they
have removed language calling for the death penalty for “aggravated
homosexuality,” and replaced it with a provision for lifetime
imprisonment. But blogger Jim Burroway says a closer reading of
the new bill shows it still allows the death penalty.
