Mexico's Supreme Court rules gay slurs hate speech

Two commonly used words that roughly translate to "faggot" are hate speech and not protected by constitutional freedoms of expression, Mexico's top court has ruled

"Even though they are deeply rooted expressions in Mexican society, the fact is that the practices of the majority of society can't validate the violations of basic right," the court said of the words "punal" and "maricones."

Advocates praised the ruling, but some said it would have little effect outside the media and public forums.
