Pathway to Marriage: Open Letter to our Community From One Colorado

By Brad Clark, Executive Director of One Colorado:

I’ll cut right to the chase – we’ve got a big fight ahead of us.

Here in Colorado, we continue to celebrate last week’s news, but that celebration has already come face-to-face with an important reality: as a community, we cannot rest until we have secured the freedom to marry in the state we call home.

The battle for marriage equality in Colorado is one we must wage together – are you ready to take the first step? Click here to help us lay the groundwork for victory!

Across our state, LGBT Coloradans have one big question on their mind: what happens next?

The answer is one we must determine together as a community. But whatever road we choose, one thing is clear: defeat is not a path to victory.

Plainly stated, LGBT Coloradans know what it’s like to have our families and our rights brought up for a vote – we’ve gone through it two separate times. And we can’t let it happen again without making sure we have a reasonable expectation of success.

For One Colorado, that means achieving marriage equality in the quickest manner possible – but in a manner that still ensures the likelihood of victory. Will you help us execute that goal by pitching in a few dollars today?

We know that in every state that has won the freedom to marry at the ballot, building the foundation for victory required tremendous energy, time and resources: millions of dollars, and tens of thousands of volunteers having hundreds of thousands of conversations with our friends, neighbors, and co-workers about why marriage matters to our families.

We also know, from looking at Proposition 8 and similar battles, that fighting for marriage equality in our courts is a very expensive, lengthy, and unpredictable process.

So clearly, the road ahead will not be easy. But we can and will prevail if we commit ourselves to sticking together – can we count on you to invest in that commitment now?

Our community has some important decisions to make, and One Colorado is working to help facilitate that process – starting with an online survey we’ll be launching next week to seek the input of our supporters and assess the time and resources they’re willing to commit to this fight.

Later this summer and fall, we will be traveling across the state to engage our community through townhall meetings and coalition roundtables – all aimed at discussing the path forward.

And as we move through this process, we are working to finalize a Strategic Assessment Group – comprised of grassroots supporters, community leaders, and coalition partners across the state. This diverse and well-informed group will provide guidance to One Colorado and our entire community as we launch our fight for marriage equality.

These are our critical next steps – and we can’t do it without you! Click here to help us build our infrastructure across the state and let Coloradans know the time for marriage equality is now.

Together, working hand in hand, we are going to make this happen. We will secure the freedom to marry for all loving, committed couples across our state – our families deserve nothing less.

So I hope you’re ready – because this is going to be one heck of a ride.
