Scottish Parliament advances marriage-equality bill

The Scottish Parliament voted last week to move marriage-equality legislation forward to a parliamentary committee. Advocates hailed the 98-15 vote as a significant step, and noted that it represents the first of three legislative hurdles that the bill must pass in order to become law.

"Equal marriage is an idea whose time has come," lawmaker Jackie Baillie of Dumbarton said after the vote.
