Holder announces policy changes benefiting same-sex couples

Attorney General Eric Holder announced on Monday sweeping expansions of federal same-sex marriage recognition designed to ensure equal treatment for legally married same-sex couples. The changes encompass survivor benefits, prison visits, courtroom testimony and bankruptcies.

"It is the [Justice Department's] policy to recognize lawful same-sex marriages as broadly as possible, to ensure equal treatment for all members of society regardless of sexual orientation," Holder said in a memo to employees.
