One Colorado: On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor lives lost to violence

By Marvyn Allen, Health Equity & Training Director, One Colorado

Every year since 1999, our community has come together around the world on November 20th to honor those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence. So far this year, at least 37 transgender individuals have been murdered in the United States due to their perceived gender identity and because of pervasive transphobia that continues to exist in this country.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) provides the transgender community and their allies the opportunity to come together to mourn the lives lost over the past year and to put a spotlight on the plight faced by the community. It's also a time for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer community to show support in ending violence against our transgender siblings. One Colorado has put together a video to honor the lives lost this year.

At TDoR events hosted across the globe, community members engage in memorial services by reading the names of those who have been murdered, learning about trans resilience and empowerment, and connecting with community.

Our friends at The Center of Colfax, Transgender Center of the Rockies, and Plume are hosting a virtual TDoR event tonight at 6:00 PM on Twitch. You can find more information here.
