Congrats to the Oscars for nods to LGBT inclusive films

GLAAD recently congratulated the creative teams and casts of 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire' and 'A Single Man' which received a combined seven Oscar nominations during today's announcement of nominees for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

Lee Daniels, honored for his work on 'Precious', became the first openly gay African American director to receive a nomination.

Both films are also nominated for Outstanding Film – Wide Release at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for outstanding images of the LGBT community and complement GLAAD’s work to bring LGBT images and stories to Americans.

“These films tell inclusive and diverse stories of our community which grow awareness and understanding of the lives of gay and transgender people,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios, “We need to advocate for more gay-inclusive stories to be shared with mainstream audiences because as more people see these images, they realize that we have the same aspirations, hopes, and deserve the same chances to take care of our loved ones and families.”

Oscar buzz, criticism for A Single Man

Oscar buzz is already circulating around British actor Colin Firth for his performance as a professor grieving the loss of his partner in out director Tom Ford's film "A Single Man." However, the marketing of the film, which shows Firth with a platonic female friend played by Julianne Moore, has been criticized by some, including Firth, as being misleading about the movie's central gay themes.

A Single Man in New York City

Check out some pics from last night's 'A Single Man' event in New York City. The Cinema Society and Bing hosted the event which included a screening of the film at the Museum of Modern Art and an after-party held at Monkey Bar.

'A Single Man' opens this Friday in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and nationwide on December 25.

I have to say it looks pretty good even though I'm still peeved at Tom Ford and his whole "it's not a gay movie" nonsense.

It's based on the Christopher Isherwood novel of the same name, for crying out loud. Clearly, it's a gay movie.

A Single Man: Gay movie or not gay movie?

'A Single Movie' sounds like a gay movie to me but I guess Tom Ford sees it differently.

According to the PR 'A Single Man' is the story of George Falconer, a 52-year-old British college professor [Colin Firth] who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim [Matthew Goode]. George dwells on the past and cannot see his future as we follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after Jim. George is consoled by his closest friend Charley [Julianne Moore], a 48-year-old beauty who is wrestling with her own questions about the future. A young student of George’s, Kenny [Nicholas Hoult], who is coming to terms with his true nature, stalks George as he feels in him a kindred spirit.

Sounds like a gay movie to me but I guess debut director Tom Ford sees it a bit differently. I've been looking forward to the movie right up until I stumbled upon a quote from a new article at the Wall Street Journal where Ford denies that it's a gay movie after all.

Above synopsis to the contrary, of course.

“I wasn’t trying to make Terminator 12," Ford tells the WSJ. "But this is not a gay film. I don’t even think about that. There are so many gay characters on TV that it’s almost become a cliché.”

I don't even know what that's supposed to mean but it's still a pretty lame thing to say.

A Single Man

Written and directed by Tom Ford, and based on the Christopher Isherwood novel, 'A Single Man' is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life. In theaters this December, 'A Single Man' stars Julianne Moore and Colin Firth.
