Gay Help Wanted: Gill Foundation Deputy Director of OutGiving

Founded in 1994 by software entrepreneur Tim Gill, the Gill Foundation is one of the nation’s largest funders of efforts to secure full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people.

Since 1996, Gill Foundation has fostered a passionate and committed donor network known as OutGiving, whose generosity has driven significant progress on the march toward equality. The hallmark of the OutGiving network is the biennial, invitation-only OutGiving Conference. It brings together major donors and institutional funders – both LGBTQ and allies – in a private setting to connect, learn, and exchange ideas on ways to advance equality through strategic and intentional philanthropy.

The Gill Foundation is looking for a talented, major donor fundraiser to educate, inspire, and grow the OutGiving network. The Deputy Director of OutGiving is a truly unique position to advise like-minded philanthropists on behalf of the nation’s leading funder of efforts to secure full equality for LGBTQ Americans.

The Deputy Director of OutGiving will report directly to and work closely with the Vice President of Partnerships. They will be charged with identifying new LGBTQ and allied donors to increase funding for LGBTQ equality. Responsibilities will include in-person donor cultivation, organizing donor events, prospect and data management, and developing inspiring communications.

New National Park Service Theme Study to Interpret, Commemorate Sites Related to LGBT History

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell today announced a new theme study, as part of the National Park Service Heritage Initiative that will identify places and events associated with the story of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans for inclusion in the parks and programs of the agency.

The theme study is part of a broader initiative under the Obama Administration to ensure that the National Park Service reflects and tells a more complete story of the people and events responsible for building this nation. The National Park Service has ongoing heritage initiatives to commemorate minorities and women who have made significant contributions to our nation’s history and culture, including studies related to the history of Latinos, women, and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Secretary Jewell made the announcement outside the Stonewall Inn in New York City, the site of a riot in 1969 that is widely recognized as a catalyst for the modern civil rights movement in the LGBT community. It is currently the only LGBT-associated site that has been designated a national historic landmark by the National Park Service as a property having extraordinary significance in American history.

“We know that there are other sites, like Stonewall Inn, that have played important roles in our nation’s ongoing struggle for civil rights,” said Jewell. “The contributions of women, minorities and members of the LGBT community have been historically underrepresented in the National Park Service, and the LGBT theme study will help ensure that we understand, commemorate and share these key chapters in our nation’s complex and diverse history.”

Fred Sainz joins HRC from Gill Foundation

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC)today announced the appointment of local resident Fred Sainz (left) to the newly created position of Vice President of Communications & Marketing which reports directly to the president.

"In this rapidly changing and often volatile political environment, HRC must continue to both prod and persuade in our mission to improve the lives of LGBT people across the country," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "And often a key component in changing hearts and minds or moving recalcitrant elected officials is an aggressive and creative communications strategy. In addition to his broad professional skills, Fred Sainz brings deep political instincts and a commitment to LGBT equality that will enhance our work. We're thrilled to have him join our senior team."

A first-generation Cuban American, Sainz has been Vice President of Communications & Marketing of the Denver-based Gill Foundation for the last two years.

"I am honored to join the first-rate team of professionals at HRC who have done so much to move an LGBT equality agenda forward," said Sainz. "HRC is the pinnacle of LGBT activism, but we must move mountains in a volatile time, both in Washington and across the country, and communicating our agenda effectively and creatively will be critical to our success."

A message from Tim Gill about marriage equality

In a statement released today about marriage equality and the Gill Foundation's newly redesigned website, Tim Gill writes, "Only five percent of Americans live in states that extend marriage to same-sex couples. Contrast that number with the fact that 50 percent of Americans say they support marriage equality.

Personal stories often make a tremendous difference in changing attitudes and laws. That’s why the newly redesigned Gill Foundation’s website features the story of Stephanie and Mary Evans-McFarland, an Iowa couple that married following the historic decision of that state’s Supreme Court. Take a look at their story. Pass it along. And do whatever you can to support marriage equality."

The Business of Change

The Gill Foundation and Weber Shandwick have released “Business of Change,” a resource guide focused on corporate-nonprofit collaboration to promote equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The 104-page guide is available free for download from either organization's website and is a first-of-its-kind collection of best practices with actionable and practical ideas to help nonprofits and corporations advance LGBT equality.

“Given the rapidly changing dynamic between the private and public sectors, we hope to challenge both nonprofits and corporations to seize opportunities to drive change on LGBT initiatives,” says Patricia Evert, Gill Foundation’s vice president of Donor Resources. “Taking action and partnering together is not just the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do.”

“Weber Shandwick believes in the power of collaboration between nonprofits and corporations. We’re proud to author Business of Change with the Gill Foundation, and hope this unique publication empowers organizations to develop more effective partnerships to promote LGBT equality,” said Chad Boettcher, Weber Shandwick’s senior vice president of Social Innovation.
