Key West: Get Revved Up for the Conch Republic Drag Race

Female impersonators are to gather in Key West for a playful parody of auto racing, swapping high-speed cars for high-heeled shoes and drag apparel while sprinting along an improvised racetrack Saturday, April 16.

The offbeat Conch Republic Drag Race is to be staged in the 700 block of Duval Street, the appropriately nicknamed “main drag” at the heart of the island’s LGBTQ entertainment district.

Presented by the Petronia St. Neighborhood Association and headquartered outside the Bourbon St. Pub, the zany race is to begin with a test run at 2 p.m. followed by qualifying heats and finals.

The traditional auto-racing atmosphere is to be spoofed by organizers dressed as “pit crew” with checkered flags while a local DJ blares the roar of revving engines.

The event’s main attraction, however, is the female impersonators competing in pancake makeup, extravagant wigs and race-mandated high-heeled footwear. They attempt to dash down the pavement faster than their rivals while trying to avoid wipeouts, twisted heels and other wardrobe malfunctions.

Racers typically must navigate an obstacle course of tires and various other street hazards as spectators cheer for their favorites. The “dragsters” also get a diva-style ride along Duval Street in shopping-cart “hot rods” propelled by local male dancers.

Race registration is free for all contestants willing to don the required towering heels and eccentric drag attire.

The drag challenge is part of Key West's 40th annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration. Scheduled April 15-24, the festival commemorates the Florida Keys’ symbolic 1982 secession from the United States and formation of the independent republic.

Among its highlights are a ceremony commemorating the secession, a lighthearted sea battle featuring tall ships, the so-called “World’s Longest Parade” that proceeds along Duval Street from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico and a “Conch Crawl & Pup Stroll” benefiting the Florida Keys SPCA.

Key West’s Fantasy Fest Parade Canceled; Other Festival Events Set to Continue

Key West’s iconic Fantasy Fest parade and street fair on Duval Street will not take place this year, organizers of the 10-day masking and costuming festival announced Monday night, to protect against the potential spread of COVID-19 and its variants.

They stressed the overall Oct. 22-31 festival and many of its scheduled events will continue, while encouraging attendees to abide by COVID protection protocols.

“Fantasy Fest will look different this year, but it is not canceled,” said festival director Nadene Grossman Orr. “Signature events like the Headdress Ball and Pet Masquerade are still planned, and there will be plenty of individual masquerade parties and other festival favorites to enjoy.”

Grossman Orr said the popular Masquerade March, scheduled Oct. 29, is currently on hold.

Both the highlight parade and street fair typically draw tens of thousands of people to Key West’s historic downtown.

Organizers of the Zombie Bike Ride and the fundraising campaign to elect the festival king and queen canceled their events last weekend, citing COVID concerns.

Fantasy Fest was established in 1979 and has since earned international acclaim for its pageantry, lavish parade floats and themed costume parties.

Grossman Orr said the event schedule at fantasyfest.com is to be updated in coming days and urged people to check it regularly. The festival’s COVID-19 policy can be viewed at fantasyfest.com/covid-19-safety-protocols/.

Travel: Key West Pride

Splashy pool parties and on-the-water adventures, late-night dance parties, a race for tutu-wearing competitors, an intriguing film premiere and a lively community parade are among the attractions during Key West Pride 2014. Set for Wednesday through Sunday, June 11-15, the festival spotlights the all-accepting diversity that has helped make Key West an internationally renowned gay and lesbian vacation spot.

Key West Pride is to kick off with an all-welcome "Bow Ties & Bubbly" bash set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the acclaimed Island House Resort, 1129 Fleming St.

During the festival competitive attendees can vie for the titles of Mr., Ms. and Miss Key West Pride at evening pageants, or dress in a tutu to race in a wacky 10k relay. Other festival attractions include an acclaimed trolley tour showcasing Key West's LGBT heritage and hotspots, a marriage equality "meet and greet," daytime and late-night parties at local clubs and resorts, a "Ghosts & Gravestones" tour spotlighting the island's spookiest sites, drag shows, a street fair on Key West's famed Duval Street, a shopping soiree and water-sports activities ranging from snorkeling to kayaking.

Among scheduled highlights is the Key West premiere of a film by activist Erin Davies. After her Volkswagen Beetle was defaced with anti-gay graffiti because of its rainbow sticker, she turned the negative act into an inspiring odyssey and filmed her "fag bug's" journey to all 50 United States. Pride attendees can view the resulting documentary, "Fag Bug Nation," meet Davies and learn how her rainbow vehicle has become a catalyst for equality. Events are set for 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, poolside at Alexander's Guesthouse, 1118 Fleming St.

The festival's culmination is to be the all-welcome Pride Parade down Duval Street, scheduled at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 15. The procession's grand marshal is Rob Smith, an openly gay Iraq War veteran, LGBT activist, journalist and author of the memoir "Closets, Combat, and Coming Out: Coming of Age as a Gay Man in the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell Army."

The parade typically features walking groups, a 100-foot rainbow flag, lavishly decorated floats and more. Everyone is invited to participate -- whether gay, lesbian, bisexual, straight or transgendered -- to celebrate Key West's enthusiastic diversity.
