Planned Parenthood responds to Colorado Senate Republicans’ anti-choice agenda

Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado issued the following statement today in response to the Colorado Senate Republicans’ Agenda to Support Colorado Families, which declared to end state funding to abortion providers.

Said PPVC President Vicki Cowart (pictured left):

“Under current law, public money cannot be spent on an abortion unless it threatens the woman’s life or results from rape or incest. This prohibition applies to Medicaid recipients as well. Furthermore in Colorado, Planned Parenthood does not receive state or federal family planning grant funds.  Rather, we provide preventive family planning services to those who need our services with support from private donations. Consequently, the issue of state funding for abortion services is a non-issue.
“The declaration put forth by the Colorado Senate Republicans to end state funding of abortion providers is a misguided, misinformed political move that does nothing to support Colorado families. In contrast, Planned Parenthood works everyday to support women and their families. Last year PPRM provided almost 350,000 methods of birth control, 52,000 STD tests and 18,000 annual exams and screenings for breast and cervical cancer. Through a special cancer prevention program, we are able to provide free breast and cervical cancer screenings to underserved Colorado women who do not have health insurance. Our more than 123,000 annual clients depend on us for their essential preventive and reproductive health care needs.”

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains has announced its partnership with Rocky Mountain CARES to collaborate to heighten awareness around public health issues with an emphasis on HIV through education, advocacy work and by providing high quality health care in keeping with the organizations’ mutual commitment to public health.

“We are excited to collaborate with Planned Parenthood. Our partnership is one that grew naturally provided our common interests in helping communities affected by and infected with HIV and creating an inclusive, safe environment for those we help, free of stigma and discrimination. We hope our relationship will play an important role in the community and improve HIV prevention for all at-risk communities,” said RMC Medical Director Dr. Benjamin Young.

Together RMC and PPRM serve the entire state. While RMC is Denver-based, people travel across the state and across the country to attain RMC’s world-class centralized medical care, case management, pharmacy assistance and peer support system. PPRM has 23 health centers throughout the state, all of which offer HIV testing and referrals and patient education.

DPS Board Adopts HCYA Resolution Supporting Sex Education

The Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance, led by Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and COLOR, has announced the Denver Public Schools’ Board of Education adoption of the Colorado Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health resolution.  The resolution passed in June by a unanimous vote.

Through adopting the resolution, DPS recognizes the importance of continuing and expanding efforts to ensure that all young people have access to science-based, comprehensive, medically accurate, culturally relevant, and age-appropriate sexuality education, information, and resources to make informed decisions about their health and relationships.

“This resolution shows that DPS and members of the school board understand the connection between positive long-term outcomes for young people and medically accurate education around sexuality issues,” said Lisa Olcese, executive director of The Alliance.  “For too many years, we have simply thrown our hands in the air when confronted with negative news about unintended teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.  This resolution lets everyone know that there are solutions to our problems – solutions based on comprehensive sexuality education.”

Individuals including parents and youth educators in addition to community leaders offered testimony in support of the resolution.  Arturo Jimenez, board vice president, introduced the resolution.

The 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey found that more than one in four 9th graders in Colorado has had sex.  By 12th grade nearly 60 percent of youth reported having had sex.  Colorado recorded the 22nd highest rate of teenage pregnancy nationwide in 2006 according to the Guttmacher Institute.  The birth rate for 15-17 year old females in Denver (2004-2006) is twice the state’s average and higher than any other urban county in the state.  Parenting is the primary reason adolescent women drop out of school, according to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.  In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly one in four teenage girls in the United States have at least one STI.

Over the recent years Colorado has made efforts to prioritize the health of Colorado youth.  In 2007, the General Assembly of the State of Colorado enacted House Bill 1292, which established content standards for the provision of human sexuality courses taught in public schools throughout the state of Colorado.  In 2009 the Colorado State Board of Education adopted academic content standards for comprehensive health education that support youth in making informed, responsible decisions about their health and in having access to the tools they need to live healthy lives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, science-based, medically accurate, age- appropriate, culturally relevant, and comprehensive sexuality education programs have been proven to help youth 1) delay the onset of sexual activity 2) reduce the frequency of sexual activity 3) reduce number of sexual partners, and 4) increase condom and contraceptive use.

The resolution is endorsed by the following organizations: ACLU of Colorado, Colorado AIDS Project, Colorado Association of School-Based Health Centers, Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights, Colorado Religious Coalition for Reproductive Rights, Colorado Section of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Colorado Youth Matter (formerly COAPPP), Denver Teen Pregnancy Prevention Partnership, Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance, Look Both Ways, Inc., NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Foundation, New Era Colorado, and Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.

Planned Parenthood of the rocky mountains announces Men’s Sexual Health program debut coincides with Men’s Health Week and Denver PrideFest 2010

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains today announced its Men’s Sexual Health Program located at Planned Parenthood’s Aurora health center.

PPRM has a long history of offering men’s health care services such as physical exams, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, testicular and colon cancer screenings, and cholesterol and high blood pressure tests. The Men’s Sexual Health Program will include specialized care for the evaluation and treatment of premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.

The debut of these new services coincides with National Men’s Health Week, June 14-20. PPRM is recognizing Men’s Health Week by encouraging men to visit their health care provider for regular checkups, preventive screenings, or any health issue.

The debut also coincides with Denver PrideFest 2010, June 19-20.

“Our new services will enable us to provide a greater continuum of care for men. We know people, including men, depend on us to meet all their reproductive and basic primary health care needs,” said Amy Dickson, vice president of clinical operations for PPRM. “Because men often are less likely than women to seek health care, it is our goal to help men access the care they need in an environment they feel welcomed.”

Clients interested in the Men’s Sexual Health Program are welcome to make an appointment or walk in.

“Men’s Health Week is the perfect time for men to remind themselves that preventive care is important to remaining healthy and reproductive health should not be overlooked,” said Dickson.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 8,400 new cases of testicular cancer were diagnosed in 2009.[1] Up to 10 percent of men of all ages experience ongoing problems with erectile dysfunction[2] and an estimated 30 to 70 percent of men experience premature or rapid ejaculation, a condition that is reported most commonly in men aged 18 to 30 years old.[3] In addition, STDs continue to pose a serious public health threat in this country and affect both sexes. In 2007, 74 percent of HIV/AIDS diagnosis among adolescents and adults were males.[4]

Planned Parenthood is committed to providing access to basic and reproductive health care for men. In 2009 PPRM saw 8,620 male clients, which represents 7 percent of its total client base. From 2008 to 2009, PPRM saw a 16 percent increase in male clients throughout its region of Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, and New Mexico. During Men’s Health Week, PPRM will be conducting community outreach activities to raise awareness for men’s health and JR’s in Denver will host a men’s health trivia night on June 14.
