Call for Submissions: Beyond - A Queer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Comic Anthology

From editors Rachel Edidin & Sfé Monster:

In both SFF and comics, there’s a long tradition of allegorical and subtextual queerness—using the trappings of genre to code characters and themes as queer while keeping them superficially straight enough not to make waves, or queering them in ways tied to their general otherness, like gender-flexible shapeshifters or gay aliens from single-sex species. It’s better now than it was in even the recent past, but we want more.

We want to see people like us as heroes—slaying dragons, piloting spaceships, getting into trouble, and saving the day—without having to read their queerness from between the lines. We want to see beautifully crafted stories, in the mediums and genres we love, that reflect and celebrate our own experiences of gender and sexuality—and a spectrum far beyond.

So we’ve decided to do it ourselves. We’re assembling, crowdfunding, and publishing an anthology of the comics we want to read: science fiction and fantasy exploring and showcasing queer characters, themes, and relationships, from a broad spectrum of world-class creators.

Beyond, a black-and-white, comics-size anthology of roughly 20 original science fiction and fantasy comics (and maybe some illustrated prose), hits the shelves in 2014.

Working With Artists call for abstract photography

WWA logoWorking with Artists is pleased to present an Abstract photography show at FLASH Gallery December 3rd, 2010 - January 16th, 2011. If you photograph the non-representational in any fashion, this is the show for you. WWA feels privileged to have Robin Rule, of RULE Gallery in Denver to be the juror for this exhibit.
For the "Abstract Visions" show, WWA is looking for images that embrace elements of abstraction--such as light, color, shape and texture--as their principal means of expression.  They challenge you to seek abstraction in your photographic subject whether that be organic forms of nature or geometry in the urban environment, created in camera, via alternative processes or using digital imaging. Faces of Hunger photo contest

Nearly 600,000 people in Colorado live with the reality of hunger. Food Bank of the Rockies’ blog, http://www.frontlinesofhunger.blogspot.com/, profiles faces of our hungry neighbors. There are SO many more faces and stories that deserve to be seen and told. FBR & Denver Magazine have partnered to give local photography lovers the opportunity to give more faces of hunger visibility and to learn, first-hand, the reality of a problem taking place in our own backyard.

Details after the jump.

* Photographers, amatuer and professional....use your artistic abilities to profile an individual or family struggling with hunger in Colorado and submit your photos and application for judging.

* Only 12% of those served by FBR agencies are homeless. The face of hunger could be your neighbor, your mechanic, a fellow student... Go out and meet real people dealing with hunger. Ask for their story. FBR works with over 700 hunger relief agencies. If you need referrals for locations, let us know.

* Submissions judged by a panel of Channel 2’s Natalie Tysdal, Mayor Hickenlooper, Kevin Seggelke, CEO of Food Bank of the Rockies, professional photographers and Denver Magazine’s CEO & Publisher, Michael Ledwitz.

* Top 50 entries featured at a Fat Tail Gallery event on September 2, 2009. Winning entries under both categories to be featured in Denver Magazine and will receive exclusive prize packages. Top entries featured on http://www.frontlinesofhunger.blogspot.com/ and will receive complimentary subscriptions to Denver Magazine.
