National AIDS Memorial Grove Extends Scholarship Application Deadline For Its Young Leaders Scholarship Program

The National AIDS Memorial Grove is extending the deadline for students to apply for a scholarship as part of its Young Leaders Scholarship Program. The original application deadline of Sept. 30th has been moved to Nov. 1st to accommodate increased interest in the program this year.

The scholarship fund, sponsored by UnitedHealthcare, recognizes, supports and encourages the educational efforts of young people committed to active public service and leadership roles in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500 and will be announced on World AIDS Day, Sunday, Dec. 1.

Applications will be accepted from both college-bound high-school seniors and college undergraduates no later than Nov. 1st. All applications must be accompanied by a personal statement and essay describing the applicants’ leadership goals, experiences related to HIV/AIDS and involvement in HIV/AIDS-related community service projects.

Details on how to apply, application deadlines and specific requirements to apply for a scholarship are available at www.aidsmemorial.org. Interested students can also contact Steve Sagaser at 415-765-0497 or by email at ssagaser@aidsmemorial.org. A panel of community leaders will judge the applications, which must be received by Nov. 1st to be considered. Applicants must provide proof of current academic status and HIV/AIDS-related community service.

“This is an important program designed to develop the next generation of leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We are extending the application process to ensure maximum participation by interested students,” said John Cunningham, executive director of the National AIDS Memorial Grove. “Thanks to the generosity of partners like UnitedHealthcare, these scholarship opportunities ensure that youth continue to honor the past by being a part of helping to build a future that is free of AIDS.”

Previous scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for ongoing scholarship support connected to both their chosen field of study and related community work. Through the re-application and qualification process, the National AIDS Memorial Grove will have the opportunity to follow these individuals in their ongoing roles as leaders in the fight against AIDS.

HRC announces scholarships for gay students

The Human Rights Campaign today announced the launch of the second year of the “Generation Equality Scholarships” for LGBT and allied students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the fight for queer equality. The scholarships are part of HRC Foundation’s Youth and Campus Outreach Program, which aims to provide tools, facilitate connections and empower young people to fight for LGBT equality on campus and beyond. To apply for the Generation Equality Scholarships, or to learn about last year’s recipients, visit: www.hrc.org/geneqscholarship.

“We’re excited to once again be able to provide exceptional students with the funding that they need and deserve. All too often, LGBT students face obstacles in the pursuit of education, whether it be from a lack of family support or negative experiences in the classroom or on campus,” said Candace Gingrich-Jones, Associate Director of the HRC Foundation's Youth and Campus Outreach Program. “The more than 1,000 applications we received last year for the Generation Equality Scholarships not only illustrated the social and economic barriers queer young people today face, but also just how committed they are to making LGBT equality a reality within their schools, communities and country.”

More info after the jump.

This year, the HRC Foundation will be awarding one $2,000 scholarship in each of the following categories:
• First-year students
• Returning four-year school students
• Returning community college students

Priority will be given to applicants who:
• Self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or an ally
• Have applied to or are enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education
• Have demonstrated a commitment or contribution to the LGBT community
• Are in good academic standing
• Have demonstrated need for financial assistance

The application deadline for academic year 2010-2011 is April 16, 2010. Finalists will be notified in early- to mid-May and will be asked to submit additional materials. Scholarship recipients will be announced in mid- to late-June.

In addition to these scholarships, the Youth and Campus Outreach Program provides a comprehensive online database of more than 220 other scholarships available to LGBT and allied students. The list, which includes national, statewide and school-specific scholarships, was created to ensure that students committed to the fight for LGBT equality can reach and benefit from institutions of higher education.
