Newseum Exhibit Explores Modern Gay Rights Movement on 50th Anniversary of Stonewall Inn Raid

In March 2019, the Newseum will open “Rise Up: Stonewall and the Gay Rights Movement,” an exhibit that explores the modern gay rights movement in the United States. The exhibit marks the 50th anniversary of a June 1969 police raid of the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village. The protests that raid ignited are considered to be the catalyst that inspired the modern gay liberation movement and the ongoing fight for LGBTQ civil rights.

“Rise Up” explores what happened at the Stonewall Inn, the myths surrounding it and how it gave rise to a 50-year fight for civil rights for LGBTQ Americans. Over the years, activists have used their First Amendment freedoms — speech, press, assembly and petition — to demand an end to discrimination against LGBTQ Americans in housing, employment and public accommodations.

Through powerful artifacts, images and historic print publications, the exhibit will explore key moments of gay rights history, including the 1978 assassination of Harvey Milk, one of the country’s first openly gay elected officials; the AIDS crisis; U.S. Rep. Barney Frank’s public coming out in 1987; the efforts for hate crime legislation; the implementation and later repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell”; and the fight for marriage equality. “Rise Up” will also look at popular culture’s role in influencing attitudes about the LGBTQ community through film, television and music, and explore how the gay rights movement harnessed the power of public protest and demonstration to change laws and shatter stereotypes.

Beginning later this year and running throughout 2019, a series of programs will focus on the rise of the gay press, and how the news media helped and hurt the gay rights movement. Other topics will include pop culture and the gay rights movement, religious liberty and LGBTQ rights, and the future of LGBTQ rights.

Books: Fair Foods - The Most Popular and Offbeat Recipes from America’s State and County Fairs

The summer season is a time for ice cream, trips to the beach, and . . . state and county fairs! The food selection at state and county fairs is now more diverse and delicious than ever before, ranging from timeless classics like apple pie and corn dogs to new inventions like spicy peanut butter and jelly cheeseburgers and fried Coca-Cola!

Award-winning chef, best-selling author, and renowned educator George Geary celebrates the weird and wonderful foods sold at state and county fairs with his new book, Fair Foods: The Most Popular and Offbeat Recipes from America’s State and County Fairs. This illustrated cookbook features 120 recipes of some of the most interesting and unusual foods served at fairs across the USA.

“For 28 seasons, I was involved in the largest county fair in the country: the Los Angeles County Fair,” says Geary. “During that time, I watched as the focus of the fair moved from blue ribbons and homemade pie bake-offs to the rows and rows of vendors that now hawk crazy food combinations. Around 1980, ‘classic’ fair food began to evolve from cotton candy and snow cones to bacon-wrapped doughnuts fried in pork belly fat. Not all the food sold at the fair is fried, but the motto of today’s county fair might as well be ‘Just Fry It!’”

In 40th Anniversary Year, Log Cabin Republicans Builds & Diversifies National Board of Directors

Yesterday, Log Cabin Republicans announced the addition of five new members of its Board of Directors: Tom Dorsey, Rachel Hoff, Robert Kabel, Joseph Nucci, and Rich Tafel.

“Fully 40 years since our founding and Log Cabin Republicans continues its growth and influence advocating for a stronger, more inclusive GOP,” Log Cabin Republicans President Gregory T. Angelo stated. “Our five newest Board members are no strangers to the fight for LGBT rights, and it is with great honor that our National Board of Directors welcomes them into the fold. We are thrilled to bring their many talents to bear as Log Cabin Republicans looks toward its next 40 years.”

Tom Dorsey has spent 43 years on Wall Street, and authored 9 books on investing and motivation. The Market Technicians Association has named him a “Living Legend of Technical Analysis,” and he speaks worldwide on this subject. He founded Dorsey, Wright & Associates in 1987 and sold the company to NASDAQ in 2014. He is now a consultant to NASDAQ and other Money Managers worldwide. “I accepted a Board position as a father of a gay son whose wedding I just attended in Puerto Rico,” Dorsey noted. “I wanted to do what I could to change the minds of conservatives who might not follow the total equality belief I have for all human beings. I am also a staunch conservative in that I want our government to be fiscally responsible and pro-growth.”

Rachel Hoff was the first openly gay delegate to serve on the Republican Platform Committee, where last year she proposed an amendment to adopt more inclusive language on the freedom to marry and broader LGBT issues in the official party platform. Ms. Hoff currently works on Capitol Hill, and notes that, “It’s an honor to join the board of an organization that has done so much to advance LGBT equality. With important work still to be done both here at home and around the world, the work of LCR to engage Republicans and conservatives in the fight for greater LGBT freedom is crucial. I’m proud to be joining so many great LGBT leaders and allies in that effort.”

Robert Kabel returns to the Board after serving as Chairman, and founding Liberty Education Forum in 2001. Mr. Kabel recently retired from the international law and consulting firm of Faegre Baker Daniels, and currently serves as the National Committeeman for the District of Columbia Republican Party. He previously served as a special assistant to President Reagan, and as a member of President Obama’s Presidential Advisory Council on HIV-AIDS. “I am pleased to rejoin the LCR board with so many accomplished and dedicated board members and excellent staff,” Kabel said. “Log Cabin’s accomplishments over the past twenty years have been remarkable but there is more to do and I am happy to be part of LCR’s efforts.”

Joseph Nucci is the youngest Director to serve on the Board and the founder of a professional networking startup based in D.C. “I am so thankful for the work that LCR has done, and I am humbled to be part of their mission going forward,” Nucci stated. “As the youngest board member, I look forward to learning the ropes and helping reimagine LCR for the next generation.”

Rich Tafel returns to the LCR Board having served as the founding executive director of Log Cabin Republicans from 1993 – 2002. Prior to that, he served as the first President of Log Cabin Federation. Mr. Tafel is the Managing Director of Raffa Social Capital Advisors, where he works with impact investors and social ventures. He is the National Director of the American Project at Pepperdine School of Public Policy focused on the future of America’s conservative movement, and pastors Church of the Holy City in Washington, D.C. “This is a critical time for LCR to play an important role,” Tafel noted. “It is an important moment as LCR 2.0 evolves to the needs of the next generation.”

Nice To See StevieB: The Lumberjack Horticulturist

By StevieB

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Have you ever locked eyes with a guy, maybe a smile is shared and then a strange feeling comes over you. The feeling that only comes to a person when they have stopped breathing. Not the hold your breath kind of stopped breathing, the kind that comes when the air is knocked out of you by something hitting your chest at top speed. Like one of those anvils from Wile E. Coyote. In an instant you believe you could quite possibly die from this weight that has blindsided you.

This light-speed occurrence has happened a minuscule amount of times in my life. This is not to say that I have not fallen head-over-heals in love, yes I have. To quote John Green's new movie, The Fault in Our Stars, you fall in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once, then get awaken at 3AM and sharply asked to taken the F*cking dog out. Well, John Green's quote goes something like that.

I was at Cherry Creek Mall early one January morning. I was there early because I had to deposit a check into the ATM because my bank for some satanic reason doesn't have a single branch in the state. Just ATMs. As I stood at the ATM I started to think about the kind of people who call these machines, ATM machines. As in Automated Teller Machine machines. I decided right then that I hated those people. As I made my way to the mall exit, sporting my dirtiest of dirty sweats; I wondered if these people also use a PIN number in the ATM machine. As this was running through my mind, I saw a blur of beard and flannel move to my right. That is when I saw him.

He was sporting a real flannel shirt. Red on black. His beard was the perfect length between manly and hipster. He wore glasses. All these personal aspects highlighted the dead Kalanchoe blossfeldiana in his hand. I knew it was a Kalanchoe because as I teenager I had a job watering plants in a greenhouse and I killed many standard houseplants. This led me to believe he may have been the mall's Horticulturist. Standing there before him, the early morning mall florescent lighting reflexed the gravy stains in my shirt. I was in love. Deeply, deeply in love. I croaked out something like, "What? That Kalanchoe is dead to you?" He smiled and said in equal jest, "Do you want it?" Do I want it.... yes! I wanted it all, I wanted him. Every fiber of his lumberjacky shirt. Every hair on his face. Yes, I wanted him. Instead, I kept walking.... and now I think of him often.

The U.S. Navy Celebrates 2017 LGBT Pride Month

The Navy joins the nation in recognizing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month throughout June. The Department of Defense (DoD) began observing LGBT Pride Month in 2012.

Initially established as "Gay and Lesbian Month" by Presidential Proclamation in 2000, LGBT Pride Month recognizes the accomplishments of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The LGBT community is part of One Navy Team that contributes their diverse talents, skills and service to the strength of the force.

"To remain the finest seagoing fighting force, the Navy needs men and women who are the right fit for the right job regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, creed or gender identity," said Capt. Candace Eckert, Special Assistant for Inclusion and Diversity. "Our goal is to ensure that the mission is carried out by the most qualified and capable Sailors. If an individual can meet the Navy's standards, they should be afforded the opportunity to be part of the One Navy Team."

The Navy is committed to recruiting and retaining top talent regardless of race, class, sex or background. A diverse, inclusive environment allows diversity of thought and innovation to thrive.

In 2016, the DoD instituted a policy change allowing transgender individuals to serve in the military as their preferred gender.

For service members, repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in 2011 allowed gay, lesbian and bisexuals to serve openly in the United States Armed Forces.

morgxn - home

home (Official Video) by morgxn on VEVO.

The video for 'home' by morgxn tells the story of Matthew and his cousin, the Empress Vivika Westwood Mugler, who together with Prince Mugler, Mel Mel Mugler, Kamari Mugler and VeeVee Mugler form The Iconic House of Miyake-Mugler.

morgxn gives PAPER Magazine some background on the meaning behind the video and “home” in general: "Belonging is not something handed to you, it's something you must claim for yourself. It's taken me my whole life to decide that the need to belong only matters internally. Trying to fit in is not the same as belonging, sometimes home is found not at home. Matthew - the boy at the center of this story - reminded me of what "belonging" really means. His cousin, Vivika Westwood Mugler, the Empress of The Iconic House of Miyake-Mugler, leads the vogueing house in the video. Shooting this video felt more like a documentary than anything else. To belong is our right... you just gotta claim it."

A Q&A With Michael Dale Kimmel, Author of The Gay Man’s Guide to Open and Monogamous Marriage by Michael Dale Kimmel

San Diego therapist Michael Dale Kimmel is the author of The Gay Man's Guide to Open and Monogamous Marriage ...

What inspired you to write The Gay Man’s Guide to Open and Monogamous Marriage? When I was a young gay boy, I dreamed of the prince who would carry me away on his horse, make me happy and take care of me forever. Reality appeared shortly after, and I realized that I was going to have to be that prince if I ever wanted my dream to come true.

I never, as a young gay boy, imagined that I would be able to legally marry that prince someday. And here we are, now, with marriage to that prince not only possible, but very real: what do we want to do with this opportunity, now that we’ve finally got it? That’s the question that motivated this book.

Legal gay marriage is a relatively new phenomenon. What are some of the issues that gay men are facing now that they have the option to marry?
For centuries, heterosexual people have defined marriage. Now, as two men considering getting married, we don’t have to do it “their” way any longer. This is a cause for rejoicing! So why aren’t we more excited? Because, it’s quite daunting to re-invent a cultural institution like marriage. It’s much easier to just follow what other people have done.

This book is an invitation – a radical invitation – to not settle. Instead, the book asks readers to really examine and investigate the idea and institution of marriage and come up with their own version of what works for them and their partners.

How are gay marriages different from heterosexual marriages? In what ways are they the same?
In many important ways, marriage between two men is dramatically different from heterosexual marriage. It’s a double testosterone marriage. We will probably not handle sex the same as our heterosexual or lesbian counterparts: we are likely to desire more of it and with a wider variety of partners.

Many of our relationships start off monogamous. However, it is my experience that about half of them – over time – do not remain so. Many gay relationships – married or not – begin to “open up” after the first few years (I call it “The Three Year Itch”).

Our marriages are probably the same in that we share challenges such as: loving someone as imperfect as we are, weathering financial and emotional storms, challenges of aging, not losing our identity in our relationships and working hard to stay interested in someone that we’ve seen burp, fart, and load the dishwasher in a way that drives us crazy.

Is an open marriage often a good choice for gay married couples, or do you find that monogamy can be a better option? What should couples look for when trying to decide which option to choose?
An open marriage is a pretty high-maintenance experience. Both partners are inviting new people and personalities into their lives, and jealousy and insecurity often come along for the ride. On the other hand, many gay men in monogamous marriages find that – over time - sexual monogamy doesn’t work well for them. They want to go through life with one man they “love” but need to have other men that they have sex with. And many gay marriages go through both “closed” and “open” periods (this is much more common than many think).

In this book, we follow two married couples: Tomas and Larry, representing a harmonious open marriage, and Ethan and Jake, representing a fulfilling monogamous marriage. Each couple will experience the joys and difficulties of their double testosterone marriage, giving readers a wide range of options and possibilities for their own marriages.

Many gay couples struggle with other issues besides whether to be sexually open or monogamous in their marriage. What are some of the other common issues you see in your practice when working with gay couples?
Over the years, I have observed that relationships between two men typically have more conflict and competition, in ways that opposite sex and lesbian relationships do not. Is it biological or cultural? As men, we are trained to compete with each other; we are trained to win, to want to be the best. This is how we’ve been socialized, isn’t it?

And yet, more-and-more often, I meet young men who don’t make all those traditional assumptions about what a man “is” and who we “should” be. I wrote a chapter about redefining gender roles, because we have an amazing opportunity to determine who we are, as two men married to each other. How do we divvy up the household tasks? How do we decide who is the more nurturing one? The more aggressive one? The more career-oriented one? The more childcare-oriented one?

Moving from a partnership to being married can often be as difficult for gay men as it is for opposite-sex couples. What advice do you have for those who are finding the transition to marriage difficult?
Having common goals, good communication skills (being able to talk about almost anything) and some degree of “structure” both partners can fall back on, make the transition easier. Creating a marriage is like designing a house: wouldn’t two partners decide what are the elements/features that each want in their house? What is important to both partners? For some guys, the kitchen may be really important, for others, it may be low on the priority list.

I encourage gay couples to look at their marriages in the same way: what elements of the marriage are most important to each? In the book I call this “designing your marriage” and, ironically, very few couples – gay or straight – are ever encouraged to do this. It’s a great way for gay couples to communicate about what matters to each of person in the relationship, while the partners - mutually - create a structure/framework for a happy, fulfilling marriage.

Do you plan to write more books on gay marriage and relationships in the future and, if so, what can you tell us about them?
I get my ideas for my books and columns both from my clients and participants in the workshops I facilitate. I’ve already begun two more books: one will focus on successfully aging in the gay community (a topic that often terrifies gay men) and the other on psychology, spirituality and humor for gay men (humor and spirituality are such underutilized resources).
