Black LGBTQ+ Org Responds to NAACP Resolutions Supporting LGBTQ+ Communities

On July 23, 2019 The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, voted unanimously on 3 pro-LGBTQ resolutions with far reaching impact on their 2,000+ units/chapters across the country. The NAACP was a champion for marriage equality and remains a strong advocate for the Equality Act and is now taking action to do deeper work with their units and chapters to invoke change locally.

The resolutions marked the next chapter in the NAACP's support of our community: ending murders and violence against transgender women and supporting the transgender community, prevention and earlier detection of HIV Virus, and inclusion of LGBTQ Diversity and Sensitivity training for units/chapters.

“Anyone who purports to care about the well-being of Black people must care about all of us all of the time. At a time when our community is under attack by occupants of the highest office in the country as well as the lowest depths of hatred and bigotry, it is noteworthy that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is taking meaningful steps toward intersectional social justice. Too many people think that the gains made by the white lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community are eroding civil protections for Black people and these people miss the fact that as long as there have been Black people there have been Black LGBTQ and same gender loving (SGL) people. Black LGBTQ/SGL people are vulnerable to discrimination and dying at a disproportionate rate and this does not have to be our reality. The resolutions passed by the NAACP will help to ensure that local chapters across the country do a better job of holding space and ensuring equality for all Black people. The National Black Justice Coalition is proud to serve as a resource," said David Johns, Executive Director, National Black Justice Coalition.

"As a Black, same gender loving woman who has been deeply disappointed in the lack of response and coverage across the country to the murder of Black transgender women, it brought me to tears to be at the convention as Black leadership from across the country voted to take action with us. The AIDS epidemic has continued to devastate the Black community and I am grateful the NAACP hasn't forgotten about us. Lastly, one of the principles of our #AllofMeAlltheTime campaign, with the National Black Justice Coalition, is to support organizations to live more deeply in seeing our community as a part of theirs beyond legislative or policy support in order to advance comprehensive non-discrimination protections that include all of who we are all of the time. We look forward to supporting, however we can, the NAACP as it does just that with their units/chapters across the country," said Victoria Kirby York, Deputy Director for the Advocacy and Action Department, National LGBTQ Task Force.

Can LGBT People Be Legally Fired?

Did you know that there are three significant cases on the U.S. Supreme Court’s docket for this fall about whether LGBT people are worthy of equal opportunity or whether they may be treated as legally inferior citizens?

The Court will hear oral arguments in October about whether LGBT people will continue to have protections under federal nondiscrimination law, or whether it would be legal under federal law for employers to fire LGBT people just for who they are or whom they love. These cases will impact the ability of LGBT people to provide for themselves and their families.

Today, MAP released a new brief, “Can LGBT People Be Legally Fired? U.S. Supreme Court Considers Three Cases That Could Take America Backward” highlighting what’s at stake with these cases.

Together, the cases have the potential to take America backward. That’s because if the Court rules that LGBT people are not protected by existing federal workplace protections, anti-LGBT opponents will rapidly use the same legal reasoning to work to attempt to overturn critical federal protections in housing, healthcare, credit, education and more. In short, LGBT people could soon find themselves living in a nation where federal law says it is legal for them to be denied a job, fired, discriminated against at school, denied a loan, rejected by a doctor, and evicted from an apartment — simply because they are LGBT.

Books: Shut Up, I'm Talking

Shut Up, I’m Talking chronicles the life and career of actor and comedian Jason Stuart. It's the funny, poignant story of a gay Jewish boy whose life changed after seeing Funny Girl at second-run movie theatre in Hollywood. It’s about surviving a crazy family who survived the Holocaust and clearing up the wreckage of one's past while learning how to become a man.

Jason has appeared in over 150 films and TV shows and has had a long and varied career, from my coming out in 1993 on the Geraldo Rivera Show to having a major supporting role in the historical drama The Birth of a Nation playing “Joseph Randall” a white, heterosexual, christian, slave owner in 1891 while being a gay liberal Jew!

“Zero for Zeros” Campaign Launches Ad Campaign Targeting Tech Giants That Contribute to Anti-LGBT Politicians

The Zero for Zeros campaign announced a new ad campaign today targeting some of the biggest and most recognizable companies in the technology and lifestyle sectors.

The ads will appear on Facebook and Twitter and will target employees and customers of the companies.

“These companies are some of the most well-known companies throughout the world and they support LGBT equality in many ways,” said Lane Hudson, Zero for Zeros campaign manager. “Their political contributions to the most anti-gay Members of Congress do not reflect the values they have expressed to their employees and the public. Instead, those contributions threaten to undermine the progress we have made, so we are asking that they reconcile their values with their corporate PAC contributions. It is a small step to reaffirm their commitment to LGBT equality.”

Zero for Zeros found that 49 companies that received a 100% rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s CEI have donated to members of Congress that are the most outspoken against LGBT equality, earning a ZERO rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s Legislative Scorecard. These companies have contributed a total of $5,837,331 from their corporate PACs to the worst of the worst Members of Congress. Zero for Zeros is asking that the companies’ corporate PACs cease giving to these members of Congress.

Puerto Vallarta to Host First National LGBTQ Media Association International Conference

The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board is proud to announce that the National Equality Media Association (NEMA), America’s sole non-profit organization dedicated to serving LGBTQ media, will hold its annual conference in Puerto Vallarta from Oct. 27 to Oct. 30, 2019. It will mark the first time in NEMA’s history that member LGBTQ publishers and owners will convene outside the U.S. to discuss the important issues facing LGBTQ publishing.

Puerto Vallarta is renowned as the premier LGBT vacation destination in Mexico. The country’s first International Gay Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) member, joining in 2014, the city was also honored as the first in Mexico to be granted Gay Travel Approved status by GayTravel.com. The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board has previously partnered with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), in addition to IGLTA, to promote the destination to the LGBTQ+ market. In 2015, the tourism board became the first destination to sponsor the Human Rights Campaign on a national campaign.

Luis VillaseƱor, Public Relations Director for the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, worked closely with the NEMA conference committee to bring the conference to Puerto Vallarta, believing those who have never been to the destination will see how special a place Puerto Vallarta is, and how welcoming it is for the LGBTQ community.

Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa and The Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta will serve as host hotels for the conference. Both hotels have a long history of service with the LGBTQ community, and the Marriott was granted LGBTQ certification by the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat and Talento Consultores in 2017.

“As part of Marriott International, the world's favorite travel company and recognized leader in the hotel industry on topics of diversity and inclusion, we are proud to show our support to the LGBTQ community and to host the 2019 NEMA conference, welcoming LGBTQ publishers from all over the United States,” said David Gauna, general manager of Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa and area general manager for Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita and Guadalajara.

“We are very excited to be able to bring publishers and owners together to discuss new and emerging business strategies that will help LGBT publications survive and thrive in an increasingly challenging publishing environment,” said NEMA President D.J. Doran.

Speaking at this year’s conference will be Bob Witeck, from Washington, D.C.-based Witeck Communications, on the importance of legacy and local LGBTQ publications and their impact on the communities which they serve; Matt Skallerud of Pink Banana Media in New York, on how to better engage with readers through digital platforms; and Jerry Cunningham, owner and publisher of OUT FRONT magazine in Denver, on how to develop and grow tertiary revenue streams.

The Gay Vegans: Helping At The Border

By Dan Hanley

There is a crisis at our southern border. A human crisis.

I have gone from sad to outraged, and at times felt super helpless. In the couple of years that I have been following what is happening to people trying to seek asylum down at our border, I have learned of several groups working to support immigrants. Many are doing wonderful work, and there are two that we have decided to financially support: Al Otro Lado and RAICES.

I know there is a lot going on in the world and there is no shortage of great nonprofits helping to make the world a better place. We have donated, and will donate again, to these two groups because they make immediate impact on those suffering in detention camps at the border.

Immediate impact. Some of the funds we donate go specifically to a bond fund, meaning an asylum-seeker currently detained, and has the permission to enter the country while awaiting a hearing, needs to pay a bond to leave. (Note from Al Otro Lado: We’d also add that a clients ability to pay bond can literally mean life or death. Because of folks donating to our bond fund we were able to get out a severely disabled and sick asylum seeking client out of detention. Medical neglect in detention is rampant!) This could be up to $8,000! Our donations are pooled with others to pay bonds and get people out of the detention camps. Right now.

Consider a donation. Any amount helps.

Thanks for reading.
