Wizard of Pride an LGBTQ Retelling of the Wizard of Oz

The innovative book publisher, Riverdale Avenue Books has just published The Wizard of Pride, an LGBTQ retelling of the Wizard of Oz from Lambda awarding-winning author, Ryan Field.

In the year 1939, discretion is a way of life for young men like Darius Krasner. However, when he gets caught making love to one of the young farm hands by the wicked Agnes McCain, and she threatens to expose him and take his dog, he’s forced to run away from the only family and home he’s ever known.

In his rush to leave, Darius stumbles across one of the most wonderful, handsome young men he’s ever met. Unfortunately, there isn’t much time to get to know him because there’s a storm approaching and Darius decides to run back home to make sure his family is safe.

By the time Darius reaches the farm, there’s a twister in the distance and he escapes to the house for shelter. On his way, a piece of flying debris hits him on the head and knocks him out. When he finally regains consciousness, he’s in the most unusual place called The Land of Pride. And according to The Good Fairy, Miss Glitz, his only way back home involves a pair of magical pink stilettos, a silvery gilded road, a place called The Rainbow City, and a man they call the Wonderful Wizard of Pride.

PlatteForum Presents “Threads: Migration Connects Us All,” a Group Exhibition by Participants in the Immigrant Artists Mentoring Program

On Friday, Aug. 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., PlatteForum presents an opening event for “Threads: Migration Connects Us All,” a group exhibition reflecting the multiverse notion of hope and the resilient narratives of the immigrant identity, at BRDG Project in the Historic Zang Building.

The exhibition will showcase visual, multi-media and performative works from a cohort of 30 emerging immigrant and established professional artists who participated in PlatteForum’s partnership with the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and their nationwide Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program (IAMP).

An expansion of PlatteForum’s art and social justice driven programming, the IAMP launched in February 2021, bringing together Denver-area artists to nurture a productive environment for collaboration, which will culminate in the Aug. 6 exhibition.

NYFA’s IAMP is the only known program of its kind in the United States and has provided 490 artists from 79 countries and regions with one-on-one mentoring, group learning and networking events nationwide. The Denver program has been facilitated by Eriko Tsogo, a Mongolian American cross-disciplinary artist based in Colorado. The program included established, professional artists serving as mentors to the immigrant artist, two weekends of intensive entrepreneurial training, and access to other artists, arts professionals and organizations.

“We couldn’t have been more honored when NYFA asked us to be their partner for the Denver launch of this amazing program,” said Kim Estes McCarty, PlatteForum executive director. “The program is a natural fit with PlatteForum’s focus on social justice and the arts. The mentors and mentees had an incredibly fulfilling experience working together and learning from one another.”

Books: Norman the Interested Cat

Non-Binary Awareness Week was last week, but every week is gender non-conforming when it comes to the new children’s book series and character Norman the Interested Cat, authored by Cheryl Cage, a political consultant turned children’s book author. 

 

Within the four books in the series thus far, Norman pushes gender norms with daily activities such as painting his nails. In the third book, Happy Clothes, Norman and his friends pick out their outfits for their friend Flossie’s 2nd birthday. In doing so, they realize that expressing their individuality through clothes makes them feel happier. Bert ends up wearing his yellow sundress, while Murphy wears sparkles galore.

DNC Announces New Coalitions Department, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Other Hires

Yesterday, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and Executive Director Sam Cornale announced the creation of the Coalitions and Community Engagement Department, the creation of the Counsel and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion position and new hires to both the Coalitions and Mobilization Departments. Brencia Berry will lead the newly created department as Director of Coalitions and Community Engagement. Ebony Baylor has been promoted to serve as Deputy Director of Coalitions, Community Engagement and Black Coalition Director. Eric Salcedo will be AAPI Coalition Director. Maria Martinez has been named Latinx Coalition Director. Theresa Sheldon will be Native American Coalitions Director. Helen Brosnan has been hired as Progressive Coalitions Director and Atoyia Deans will serve as Coalitions Manager. Tamara Chrisler will serve as Counsel and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, a newly created position reporting to Chief Operating Officer Monica Guardiola. LGBTQ and Women’s Coalitions Directors will be announced in the near future.

In the Mobilization Department, Andrew Gauthier has been hired as Creative Director. Christian Richard has been promoted to serve as Design Director and Hal Irish has been hired as Digital Advertising Director. Olivia Hill has been promoted to Director of Grassroots Donor Relations and Erin Conway has been promoted to Direct Mail and Telemarketing Director.

In the Special Projects Department, Mansoor Khadir has been promoted to serve as Special Projects Director. Chelsey Cartwright will serve as Deputy Special Projects Director and Malik Haughton will be Special Projects Manager.

“These hires, and our deepened focus on coalitions work, will ensure the DNC leaves nothing on the table as we fight to elect Democrats up and down the ballot in the months and years ahead,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. “Each and every one of these staff members is among the strongest talents in our party and will bring deep experience and unique perspective to the work we do. I could not be more excited to welcome them to the DNC family and look forward to working with them in the years to come.”

“The DNC continues to recruit top talent to meet the moment,” said DNC Executive Director Sam Cornale. “The fight for 2022 will live or die on our ability to message and organize voters key to rebuilding the Biden coalition, especially voters of color and younger voters. U.S. ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF HEALTH DR. RACHEL LEVINE TO SPEAK AT 2021 USCHA OPENING

“I started my residency at Mount Sinai in New York City during the early ‘80s and witnessed the HIV/AIDS pandemic firsthand. We’ve made so much progress – from testing to treatments – but there is still a long way to go. We need to increase access to testing and treatment (including PrEP), ensure equitable access, and expand telehealth services,” said Dr. Levine. “NMAC continues to play a critical role towards ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. I am delighted to speak at the opening plenary session and work with partners and attendees towards a brighter future.”

“Secretary Levine has been a barrier breaker throughout her career in public life as well as a dedicated public servant,” said Paul Kawata, Executive Director of NMAC. “Her experience in public health and as a trans woman has brought a new and much needed voice and knowledge to the federal fight to end the HIV epidemic. We look forward to welcoming her to USCHA and working with her to bring the epidemic to an end.”

Paralympian Courtney Ryan Is Out & Training for Tokyo 2021 in “It Gets Better” Docu-Series: Passion. Power. Performance.

 

Last summer, It Gets Better Project announced a docu-series in partnership with Procter & Gamble entitled “Passion. Power. Performance.” Now as we inch closer to the much anticipated 2021 Olympic Games, the four episode series has launched, and episode one features Arizona-based paralympic basketball player for Team USA, Courtney Ryan.

The docu-series shares inspirational stories behind proud LGBTQ+ athletes who are out and training for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The digital series premiered during this year’s It Gets Better: A Digital Pride Experience event which streamed live on the organization’s YouTube Channel on June 23rd and 24th, and included a special interview with Courtney Ryan (timestamp: 2:21:00). The global audience of the It Gets Better Project received a glimpse into the lives of LGBTQ+ athletes who won’t let setbacks keep them from achieving their dreams.

For nearly a decade, the It Gets Better Project has upheld a mission to uplift, empower, and connect LGBTQ+ youth around the globe through storytelling and community building. Throughout “Passion. Power. Performance.” the organization will also amplify the stories of UK based swimmer Michael Gunning (competing for Jamaica), Brazil rugby player Izzy Cerullo, and USA BMX freestyle rider Chelsea Wolfe.

In her “Passion. Power. Performance.” video, Courtney says, “I want to be an inspiration because you see me on the court doing some crazy tricks, tilting in a chair, doing all of this stuff that you wouldn’t expect. That’s what I love about wheelchair basketball -- we get the opportunity to change perceptions and change ideas of what disability should look like. We aren’t fragile. We are competitors, and we’re ready to prove that.”

“Passion. Power. Performance.” will emphasize the resilience of queer athletes and allow viewers to learn about the necessary community of support for a LGBTQ+ athlete’s success. We will hear about coming out in the public eye and how that journey relates to their performance, where they draw their strength to compete from, and what obstacles they anticipate along with their plans to overcome them. Given the pushback of the Olympics to 2021 due to the global pandemic, these athletes have been met with an all-new set of challenges and forced to find inspiration for their resilience as they continue to navigate these unprecedented times.

Conan Gray has released the official music video for new single “People Watching." The video, directed by Joe Mischo, finds Conan working in a coffee house watching everyone fall in love around him while he is multi-tasking.

On the new video Conan said: “The best place on earth to people watch is the cafe. The perfect couples talking about their mornings, students studying, sweet couples who’ve sat at the same table for decades. It’s wonderful. My best friend Ashley and I used to joke about the idea of us working at a cafe together, how terrible we’d be at our job because we’d get so distracted staring at people. So for the people watching video I brought Ashley to LA and thought I’d play the situation out, really show how much of a beautiful disaster it would be if I were to work at a cafe as I always say I should’ve.”
