"Before I Change My Mind" featuring nonbinary lead role to world premiere at Locarno


Loud Whisper Productions and Outside Line Studio’s Before I Change My Mind, the highly anticipated feature film debut from award-winning writer-director Trevor Anderson, is set to make its world premiere at the 75th Locarno Film Festival in competition as a part of Concorso Cineasti del presente (Filmmakers of the Present), on August 10, 2022, in Locarno, Switzerland.

The film stars newcomer Vaughan Murrae (“Robin”), alongside Dominic Lippa (“Carter”), Lacey Oake (“Izzy”), Matthew Rankin (“Daniel”), and Shannon Blanchet (“Annie”).

It’s 1987. While the other students wonder if their new classmate is a boy or a girl, Robin (debut nonbinary actor Vaughan Murrae) forges a complicated bond with the school bully, making increasingly dangerous choices to fit in. Shot from an innovative screenplay, no gendered pronouns are used to describe Robin throughout the film.

Trevor Anderson is a writer-director-actor and former video store clerk whose short films have been presented at many international festivals. His work has screened three times at Sundance and twice at the Berlinale, where his musical The Man That Got Away (2012) won the D.A.A.D. Short Film Prize.

Anderson says, “When I was a teenager in Canada in the 1980s, I was often asked, ‘Are you a boy or a girl?’ I wish I could’ve let that question hang in the air unanswered, like Robin does in the film.”

IndieWire has named Before I Change My Mind as one of “10 Must-See Movies at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival,” praising its “soft and transportive ’80s aesthetic,” and noting that the film “seems determined to confront the challenges and triumphs of self-becoming with the unwavering honesty of someone who remembers them both.”

At the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, the script for Before I Change My Mind was named to The GLAAD List, a curated list of the ten most promising LGBTQ-inclusive screenplays in Hollywood.

Before I Change My Mind is directed by Trevor Anderson from a screenplay by Anderson & Fish Griwkowsky, produced by Katrina Beatty and Alyson Richards, and executive produced by Trevor Anderson, Justin Lachance, Patrick Ewald, and Nick Adams.

Anti-LGBTQ+ Grooming Narrative Surged More Than 400% on Social Media Following Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay or Trans’ Law

In the wake of the passage of Florida’s discriminatory “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” bill, extremist politicians and their allies engineered an unprecedented and dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ misinformation campaign that saw discriminatory and inflamatory “grooming” content surge by over 400% across social media platforms, according to a new report released today by the Human Rights Campaign and the Center for Countering Digital Hate. The report — Digital Hate: Social Media’s Role in Amplifying Dangerous Lies About LGBTQ+ People — reveals that the average number of tweets per day using slurs such as “groomer” and “pedophile” in relation to LGBTQ+ people surged by 406% in the month after the Florida bill was passed, resulting in a sharp spike in online homophobia and transphobia that social media platforms not only failed to crack down on, but also profited from.

The report also reveals that the anti-LGBTQ+ content was largely driven by a small group of extremist politicians and their allies who together are driving a coordinated and concerted campaign to attack LGBTQ+ kids in an effort to rile up extreme members of their base ahead of the midterm elections. According to the report’s findings:

  • In a matter of mere days, just ten people drove 66% of impressions for the 500 most viewed hateful “grooming” tweets — including Gov. Ron DeSantis’s press secretary Christina Pushaw, extremist members of Congress like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, and pro-Trump activists like “Libs of TikTok” founder Chaya Raicheck.
     
  • Posts from these 10 people alone reached more than 48 million views, and the top 500 most influential “grooming” tweets all together were seen 72 million times.
     
  • The astonishing visibility these posts garnered is a direct result of Twitter’s failure to enforce its own policies banning anti-LGBTQ+ slurs. Twitter failed to act on 99% of the 100 hateful tweets reported to them anonymously by CCDH researchers, even after it had stated ‘grooming’ slurs were against its policies on hate speech.
     
  • On Facebook and Instagram, 59 paid ads promoted the same narrative. Despite similar policies prohibiting anti-LGBTQ+ hate content on both social media platforms, only one ad was removed.

“As social media platforms fail to enforce their own standards — enabling a wave of online anti-LGBTQ+ hate to grow without restraint — extremists are wielding dangerous influence, seeking to radicalize Americans, incite hate against LGBTQ+ people, and mobilize the extremists within their base ahead of the midterm elections,” said HRC Interim President Joni Madison. “But the rise of this online vitriol doesn’t just have political implications — there are deadly, real world consequences as violent rhetoric leads to stigma, radicalization, and ultimately violence. Nearly one-in-five of any type of hate crime is now motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ bias, and the last two years have been the deadliest for transgender people, particularly Black transgender women. HRC, along with our partners at the Center for Countering Digital Hate, urgently calls on social media companies to act swiftly and transparently to stop the spread of extremist and hateful misinformation, including the grooming narrative.”

“We’re in the middle of a growing wave of hate and demonization targeting LGBTQ+ people – often distributed digitally by opportunistic politicians and so-called ‘influencers’ for personal gain,” said Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate. “Online hate and lies reflect and reinforce offline violence and hate. The normalization of anti-LGBTQ+ narratives in digital spaces puts LGBTQ+ people in danger. Facebook and Twitter claim in their rules to prohibit this kind of targeted hate and harassment but they simply don’t enforce those rules on bad actors — rules which are designed to protect others’ rights. The clear message from social media giants is that they are willing to turn a blind eye. LGTBQ+ rights have been transformed after decades of hard-won progress, but progress is fragile unless you continue to defend it.”

OutRight Action International Announces Selection of Maria Sjödin as New Executive Director

OutRight Action International, today announced the selection of Maria Sjödin (pictured) as its new executive director. With 25 years of experience advocating globally for LGBTIQ equality, Maria will lead the international human rights organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) people at a pivotal time of change, expansion, and renewal. This momentous occasion comes after a yearlong, extensive search process that involved highly-qualified, diverse and passionate candidates from around the globe.

Maria, who previously served as OutRight’s acting executive director, succeeds Jessica Stern who joined the Biden Administration last September as the United States Special Envoy to Advance the Human Rights of LGBTQI+ Persons at the State Department.

“I am honored and privileged to be given the responsibility to lead OutRight Action International,” said Maria Sjödin. “Our focus on accelerating legal and social change across the world is at a very critical moment. While LGBTIQ communities are more visible than ever, governments, in too many places, are trying to stop or even roll back on our rights and progress. My vision is that OutRight will be there, for communities in crisis, for emerging organizations in underfunded regions and for the work that creates sustainable change, ensuring that LGBTIQ people can live in safety, with dignity and with our rights protected.”

A member of the senior management team, Maria also served as OutRight’s deputy executive director, overseeing the communications and development teams. During this period, the organization saw significant growth in revenue, enabling strong programmatic expansion, as well as growth in donor engagement, strategic partnerships, and visibility. Maria also helped launch pioneering initiatives including the organization’s LGBTIQ-specific COVID-19 and Ukraine Emergency Funds. The latter is aimed at providing assistance to LGBTIQ people who are in need of safe shelter, basic necessities, and humanitarian support as a result of the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine.

Prior to joining OutRight, Maria was the executive director of RFSL, Sweden’s largest LGBT organization and one of the oldest LGBT organizations in the world. During their tenure, Maria established RFSL's international program and played a key role in advocating for marriage equality and the abolishment of forced sterilization amongst trans people as a requirement for legal gender recognition.

NMAC Statement on Monkeypox Federal Public Health Emergency

Following is a statement from NMAC Executive Director Paul Kawata on the federal declaration of a public health emergency on the spreading Monkeypox epidemic.  

“This declaration of a national emergency on Monkeypox is a good first step from the federal government. This declaration will allow federal agencies to prioritize resources to provide vaccinations and outreach for those at risk of infection.”  

“However, it is only a first step and there are many questions that must be answered. How will vaccinations be rolled out? How will the federal government ensure not just access to vaccinations but equity in that access? When will the CDC recommend that all gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men get vaccinated? How will they make that happen, given issues of stigma and vaccine hesitancy? And how can this be done in the current political climate without further stigmatizing the LGBTQ community?”

“Immediate clarity must be provided beyond this federal declaration. Making a declaration of an emergency is an easy step. The hard part starts now. How do we make this all happen?”

Human Rights Campaign Commends the Biden Administration’s Monkeypox (MPV) Public Health Emergency Declaration; Calls for Swift Federal Action

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, commended the Biden Administration for declaring the monkeypox virus (MPV) outbreak a national public health emergency while noting that more needs to be done to ensure equitable access to vaccines and treatment.

“Declaring MPV to be a public health emergency is a crucial step forward in sounding the alarm and bringing much-needed urgency to the federal response,” said Torrian L. Baskerville, director of HRC’s HIV and Health Equity program. “The window for immediate action is rapidly closing. We expect that the CDC, HHS, FDA and the White House will use this emergency to leverage every resource at our nation’s disposal to combat the virus. Communities across the country are in desperate need of more vaccines, increased and easier access to testing, more direct health care provider training, and funding for state and local health departments and sexual health clinics to effectively treat their patients. It’s imperative that we prioritize outreach to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals to ensure equitable access to vaccines and treatment by partnering with community organizations and health clinics. A public health response that does not center equity is a failed public health response.”

HRC has been closely monitoring the monkeypox outbreak, especially as the virus spreads primarily among gay, bisexual and transgender men, and transgender women. According to the CDC, as of August 3, there were 6,617 confirmed cases of MPV in the U.S., though this number is likely an undercount due to limited access to testing.

In an effort to get accurate and timely information to the LGBTQ+ community, HRC launched a resource page that lays out what the virus is, how it spreads, symptoms to watch for and current vaccine information, among other crucial information based on CDC and HHS guidance. MPV is a rare but potentially serious, viral illness that typically involves flu-like symptoms, accompanied by a rash, which may look like pimples or blisters. This virus can be transmitted to anyone, anywhere through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact.  

Biden-Harris Administration Bolsters Monkeypox Response; HHS Secretary Becerra Declares Public Health Emergency

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced today that he will declare the ongoing spread of monkeypox virus in the United States a Public Health Emergency (PHE). This action will further strengthen and accelerate the Biden-Harris Administration’s response in recognition of the continued rapid transmission of monkeypox in the U.S. and globally, and to signal the seriousness and urgency with which the Administration is responding. The announcement comes on the heels of President Biden appointing Robert Fenton of the Federal Emergency Management Agency as White House National Monkeypox Response Coordinator and Dr. Demetre Daskalakis of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as White House National Monkeypox Response Deputy Coordinator.

“Ending the monkeypox outbreak is a critical priority for the Biden-Harris Administration. We are taking our response to the next level by declaring a public health emergency,” said Secretary Becerra. “With today’s declaration we can further strengthen and accelerate our response further.”

“President Biden has called on us to explore every option on the table to combat the monkeypox outbreak and protect communities at risk,” said White House National Monkeypox Response Coordinator Robert Fenton. “We are applying lessons learned from the battles we’ve fought – from COVID response to wildfires to measles, and will tackle this outbreak with the urgency this moment demands.”

The PHE declaration is in concert with the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) work to explore new strategies that could help get vaccines to affected communities across the country, including using new dose-sparing approach that could increase the number of doses available, up to five-fold.

The public health emergency also carries important implications for data sharing with the federal government. Fifty-one jurisdictions have already signed data use agreements that will provide the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with information related to vaccine administration. Declaring the outbreak an emergency may provide the justification that the remaining jurisdictions need to sign their agreements. Additionally, it provides authorities to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to collect testing and hospitalization data.

As of today, HHS has shipped more than 602,000 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to states and jurisdictions, an increase of 266,000 in the past week. HHS has allocated 1.1 million doses to states and jurisdictions in total and is making more doses available as jurisdictions use their current supply. HHS also announced today that it has accelerated the delivery of an additional 150,000 doses to arrive in the U.S. next month. The doses, which were slated to arrive in November will now arrive in the U.S. in September.

Today’s announcements are part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s comprehensive strategy to combat the monkeypox outbreak.  The strategy includes significantly scaling the production and availability of vaccines, expanding testing capacity and making testing more convenient, reducing burdens in accessing treatments, and conducting robust outreach to stakeholders and members of the LGBTQI+ communities.

The North Face Summer of Pride Series with Pattie Gonia Comes to Denver this Saturday


In May, The North Face unveiled its ‘Summer of Pride’ series of events, designed to bring people together and celebrate local LGBTQ+ communities all while connecting to the outdoors. Headlining the series is a collaborative partnership with Pattie Gonia (they/she), Drag queen, community organizer, environmentalist. Additionally, The North Face will build on its multi-year partnership with Brave Trails, an organization and residential summer camp for LGBTQ+ youth centered on leadership and skills development.

“We believe that exploration is for everyone and it is critical to empower and uplift voices in the LGBTQ+ community in order to make the outdoors an equitable and safe space for all. The Summer of Pride series is one of the ways we’re working to promote a more accessible and welcoming environment for individuals from all backgrounds to gather and experience the joy of the outdoors," said Mike Ferris , The North Face VP, Global Brand Management

The North Face Summer of Pride Series kicked off in Portland, OR on June 11 and will host community events in three more major cities: Denver, CO (August 6), Columbus, OH (August 30) and San Francisco, CA (November 5).

At each destination, events will include a half-day program led by Pattie, designed to foster community and celebrate the outdoors. Attendees will have the opportunity to “choose their own adventure” and connect with – and learn from – organizations and community leaders including The North Face Explore Fund grantee partners during breakout sessions, nature walks, and hikes, all designed to build and support local engagement.

“The LGBTQ+ community needs to be everywhere – especially the outdoors. We're here, we’re Queer and we’re enjoying the outdoors. I’m thrilled to partner with The North Face and other community leaders to create a safe space to celebrate the great outdoors with the Queer community. This collaboration helps expand exploration for everyone, especially the LGBTQ+ community who are vastly underrepresented in the outdoor community," said Pattie Gonia, drag queen, community organizer, and environmentalist.

Following the theme of local community, The North Face is partnering with retailers Public Lands, EVO and Sports Basement to help bring the Summer of Pride series to life.

This year, The North Face is continuing to support multiple LGBTQ-led and focused orgs, including a $100,000 donation to Brave Trails to support its work and the development of its “Forever Home” and new overnight summer camp facility based in Santa Clarita, CA on 54 acres in the Angeles National Forest. The camp will be the first LGBTQ+ camp solely dedicated to Queer youth leadership and community building in the world.

In addition, The North Face is releasing a Pride-inspired product collection featuring adult and youth styles available at https://www.thenorthface.com/pride.

This work is part of the company’s decade-long investment in increasing access and equity in the outdoors through The North Face Explore Fund (established 2010), and the Explore Fund Council (established 2020). EPA Seeks Input on Latest Pollution Prevention Grant Opportunity Funded by $100 Million Investment from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced two listening sessions to collect input on the development of a new grant opportunity made possible by the $100 million investment in the agency’s Pollution Prevention (P2) program from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The new grant opportunity will encourage products, purchasing, and/or supply chains that are safer, more sustainable, and environmentally preferable and advance the Biden-Harris Administration’s bold environmental agenda.

The P2 program also delivers on President Biden’s Justice40 commitments to deliver 40% of benefits from climate, clean energy and pollution reduction investments, including from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to underserved or overburdened communities.

“The products that we buy, use, and work with every day can have a real impact on our health and the environment like air and water pollution, waste disposal issues, and climate change,” said EPA Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pollution Prevention Jennie Romer. “This new grant opportunity would leverage our existing tools and programs to increase access to safer and more sustainable products, like products that conform to EPA’s recommended standards and ecolabels, especially in disadvantaged and other communities with environmental justice concerns.”

A listening session on Sept. 7 will seek input from tribes on this new grant opportunity. Another session on Sept. 8 is for all potential applicants and stakeholders. Eligible applicants include U.S. states, Tribes, territories, or entities of these governments such as colleges and universities. Eligible applicants may also partner with interested stakeholders. Matching funds will not be required for these grants, making this funding opportunity more accessible to underserved and overburdened communities. The funding cycle for the new grant opportunity announced today would run in the off years of the traditional P2 grants.  

EPA is interested in understanding how these grants can be most accessible and useful to applicants. EPA will also seek additional insight into how funded projects can increase supply and demand for safer, environmentally preferable products, such as those certified by EPA’s Safer Choice program or identified by EPA’s Environmentally Preferable Purchasing program. Additionally, the agency is also interested in feedback on which projects would best support the grant’s goals, how to best encourage grantees to partner with other organizations to maximize project impact, how to best encourage projects that will benefit underserved communities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and which barriers exist to potential applicants and what can be done to minimize those barriers.

This new grant opportunity is in addition to the P2 grant opportunities announced earlier this year for states and Tribes to develop and provide businesses with information, training, and tools to help them adopt P2 practices. These included a new P2 grant opportunity of approximately $14 million funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which built upon the traditional P2 grants program that has been administered by the agency for over 25 years. EPA anticipates announcing the awardees for these opportunities in the coming months.

The Chicks Launch Exclusive Channel on SiriusXM

SiriusXM announced today the launch of The Chicks Channel, a limited-run channel celebrating the music of beloved musical icons, The Chicks. Listeners can tune in to The Chicks Channel beginning today on SiriusXM’s channel 104 and on the SXM App.

 

“Music has always been a medium that brings people together, a way to connect and find commonality,” said The Chicks. “As we continue to connect with our fans across the country on tour, we are so happy to also bring our music across the airwaves on our own SiriusXM channel.”


The Chicks Channel will explore The Chicks’ entire catalog, including some of their biggest hits like “Wide Open Spaces” and “Cowboy Take Me Away,” as well as deep cuts and live performances. The channel will also highlight their latest album Gaslighter, which charted No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Charts.

The exclusive channel will feature special commentary and stories from the band, intermixed with hand-picked music they love by artists, including Brandi Carlile, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Taylor Swift, Patty Griffin, James Taylor, David Gray, The Beatles and more.

The Chicks Channel will be available on channel 104 today through Tuesday, August 9, while the SXM App will broadcast The Chicks Channel through August 31.

The Chicks also announced today five new dates for their critically acclaimed The Chicks Tour, which kicked off to rave reviews earlier this summerThe band is set to perform on October 4 at the Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion in Rogers, AR, with additional stops confirmed in Oklahoma City on October 5 at The Zoo AmphitheatreOctober 8 at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in Woodlands, TX, followed by back-to-back performances at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, TX on October 10, and October 11.
