June is nearly here, and with it comes the much-awaited celebration of Pride! Pride month is a time for the LGBTQ+ community and allies to come together and celebrate the progress and achievements made towards equality and inclusivity. Boulder Pride, one of Colorado's most prominent Pride events, is no exception to this. We had the opportunity to speak with Juan Moreno, the Director of Corporate Sponsorships & Special Events for Boulder Pride, to learn more about what makes their event unique.

"Our events are a diverse mixture of efforts serving different pockets of the community. Whether you're sober or not, are looking for something more youth and family friendly, or are just looking to have a party, we have something for you!" Moreno said. Boulder Pride aims to create a safe and inclusive space where everyone can come together to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. The event showcases the vibrant culture of the LGBTQ+ community while also providing a platform to discuss the challenges they still face.

Boulder Pride has a packed schedule of events for Pride month, and Moreno shared some of the can't-miss events on the schedule, including the Boulder Pride Festival at Boulder Central Park on June 11th, Lafayette's Pride on the Plaza on June 15th, the Official Pride Party in Partnership with DV8 Distillery on June 17th, QTPOC Pride on June 18th, Queer Contenders on June 21st, and the Longmont Pride Festival on June 30th. Each of these events aims to provide a unique and inclusive experience for the attendees, from family-friendly events to late-night parties.

"Pride is more than just a party here in Boulder County," Moreno explained. "Our events are a time when the community can gather, new connections can be made, and an opportunity to engage with the work being done for LGBTQ+ folks across the state of Colorado." For the LGBTQ+ community in Boulder County, Pride is a time to celebrate their identities, connect with others, and work towards creating a more inclusive society.

"We plan on hosting a series of events that hit different pockets of the community. Check out our website when we begin launching events in mid to late April to plan out your entire month!" Moreno advised. Boulder Pride's website will be updated with information on all the events, making it easier for attendees to plan their Pride celebration in advance.

LGBTQ+ Advocacy Orgs Raise Alarm to Business Community on Coordinated Anti-LGBTQ+ Attacks; Call on Target to Lead

Recent pushback against businesses such as Anheuser-Busch and Target, blatantly organized by extremist groups, serves as a wake-up call for all businesses that support the LGBTQ+ community. The extremist playbook of attacks aimed at preventing LGBTQ+ inclusion and representation, silencing allies, and making the community invisible is all too familiar. These attacks fuel hate against LGBTQ+ individuals, as evidenced by the onslaught of over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills restricting basic freedoms and seeking to erase LGBTQ+ people this year.

The harassment and extremist attacks targeting businesses standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and upholding values of diversity, equity, and inclusion have forced companies like Target to step up and lead. It is essential for businesses to demonstrate unwavering support for LGBTQ+ employees, shareholders, customers, allies, and the broader community when their values of diversity, equity, and inclusion are put to the test.

Reaffirming and doubling down on these values is not only the right thing to do but also good for business. Research shows that when a brand publicly supports and demonstrates a commitment to expanding and protecting LGBTQ+ rights, Americans are twice as likely to buy or use the brand. Among Americans aged 18-34, the likelihood of wanting to work at a company that publicly supports LGBTQ+ rights increases by 5.5 times.

The support for LGBTQ+ communities extends beyond LGBTQ+ individuals themselves, with 70% of non-LGBTQ+ people believing that companies should publicly support and include the LGBTQ+ community through practices like hiring, advertising, and sponsorships (Accelerating Acceptance, 2023).

In this critical moment, Target, known for its consistent and genuine support of the LGBTQ+ community through outreach and policies, must champion equity and inclusion as it has for over a decade. The recognition Target received for its outstanding commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion from the Executive Leadership Council in 2022 must now be proven.

When it comes to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, neutrality is not an option. HRC and other LGBTQ+ advocacy orgs call on Target to release a public statement within the next 24 hours reaffirming its commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, put Pride merchandise back on the sales floor and online in full, and ensure the safety of team members who are on the front lines.

They say that Target, alongside all businesses, can leverage the support of LGBTQ+ organizations to navigate this wave of hate and send a resounding message to extremists: fear will not prevail, just as it has failed in every other anti-LGBTQ+ campaign of the past.

Organizations calling on Target, as well as all businesses, to stand up against anti-LGBTQ2S+ extremism include Family Equality, GLAAD, GLSEN, The Human Rights Campaign, National Center For Lesbian Rights, National LGBTQ Task Force, and National Black Justice Coalition.

EPA awards $998,770 to clean up and revitalize former Holy Trinity property in Trinidad, Colorado

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced the Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center will receive a $998,770 Brownfields Cleanup Grant, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to clean up and restore the former Holy Trinity Convent and School at 237 Church Street in Trinidad, Colorado. The property is contaminated with asbestos, lead paint, inorganic contaminants and heavy metals.

EPA’s award to Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center is among six Brownfields grants totaling nearly $4.78 million announced today for cleanup and revitalization projects in communities across Colorado.

“This Brownfields cleanup project will remove harmful contaminants and restore a vital property in historic downtown Trinidad,” said EPA Regional Administrator KC Becker. “We look forward to the redevelopment of the site as new housing, hotel and restaurant space, contributing to the vitality of the community.”

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is helping clean up and revitalize communities across Colorado,” said U.S. Senator Michael Bennet. “With this funding, Buena Vista, Pueblo, Telluride, Silverton, San Luis and Trinidad can make sure these sites are safe for the families living near them and restore them in ways that meet the communities’ needs.”

The EPA funds are part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda to expedite the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites in while advancing environmental justice through the Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup (MARC) Grant programs. Thanks to the historic boost from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this funding is the largest ever by the EPA’s Brownfields MARC Grant programs.

“Our mission at Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center is to provide integrated healthcare, wellness and community spirit and to promote and create social and cultural opportunities in Las Animas County and the City of Trinidad through partners,” said Gerald D. Cimino, Founder and Chairman of the Board Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center. “The EPA is one such partner. We are so thankful and excited to receive this grant. Workforce housing is a necessary component to building a stronger community and in promoting growth in southeastern Colorado. Thank you again from all of us at Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center, the City of Trinidad, Las Animas County and southeastern Colorado.”

Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center will use the EPA grant to clean up the 53,477‐square‐foot vacant building, which operated as a school starting in 1873 and later as both a school and convent until it closed in 2004. Once cleanup is completed the building will be restored as apartments and a hostel and bar/restaurant, including more than 30 new guest rooms. The plan will create a vibrant, mixed‐use building on a currently abandoned site.

In Face of Anti-LGBTQ+ Extremism, 200 Senior Living Communities Commit to LGBTQ+ Inclusion

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, and SAGE, the world’s largest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ elders, released the 2023 Long Term Care Equality Index (LEI). This year, 200 long-term care communities across 34 states participated in the LEI, with 75 percent of participating communities earning either the High Performer or Leader designation. Recent news about a senior living facility in Boston vandalized with hate speech, as well as a story of a 79-year-old transgender woman who was discriminated against by a nursing home in Maine, highlight the need to support LGBTQ+ elders.

Many older LGBTQ+ people are fearful of living their authentic selves or faced with outright discrimination against them and their families simply because of who they are. In a study by AARP, 76 percent of older LGBTQ+ people expressed concern about having adequate social support to rely on as they age. The same study found that 73 percent of LGBTQ+ older people do not have access to LGBTQ+-specific services for older people. In response, the HRC Foundation’s Health & Aging program and SAGE created the LEI -- the only-of-its-kind benchmarking tool promoting LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices in long-term care and senior housing communities. The tool also formally recognizes those communities that lead the field in LGBTQ+ inclusion.

“With anti-LGBTQ+ extremism on the rise, it is more important than ever to create safer spaces for LGBTQ+ people and that includes the places we age. It’s powerful to see 200 communities come together with HRC and SAGE to deliver on values of inclusion and equity,” said Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign. “Our older LGBTQ+ community – the ones whose shoulders we stand on – are so often forgotten, and they deserve more from all of us. The participation in our first-ever LEI is a huge step forward in uplifting and protecting the needs and rights of our elders. And we aren’t done – we look forward to seeing expanded participation in the LEI in years to come.”

“One of the biggest concerns facing older LGBTQ+ people is their future – especially when finding welcoming and inclusive places to live and receive care in their later years,” said SAGE CEO Michael Adams. Today, 200 long-term care communities nationwide demonstrate their commitment to LGBTQ+ elders with their pledge to the LEI. The LEI is a powerful tool that helps ensure that LGBTQ+ elders get the respectful care they deserve as they age. This is essential for all LGBTQ+ older people, but the need is especially acute for LGBTQ+ elders of color, transgender older adults, and LGBTQ+ elders living in rural areas, who often face even greater challenges. SAGE is proud to work with the Human Rights Campaign Foundation on this vital initiative so that LGBTQ+ elders can age with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Prepare for a Royal Rom-Com Extravaganza: 'Red, White & Royal Blue' Hits Prime Video on August 11!

RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE, based on the New York Times best-seller, will premiere globally on August 11, exclusively on Prime Video. The motion picture edition of the book will be on stands on July 4.

Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: Stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity … and total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder, driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time.

Going into damage-control mode, their families and handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected. Based on Casey McQuiston’s critically acclaimed New York Times best seller, Red, White & Royal Blue marks the feature film writing and directing debut of Tony Award-winning playwright Matthew López (The Inheritance).

Human Rights Campaign Calls on Target to Stand Firm in Support for LGBTQ+ Community; Reject Threats from Conservative Extremists

Amid extremist anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and attacks on businesses that stand by values of diversity and inclusion, retail giant Target is the latest center of attack for extremist groups. In response, it’s been reported that Target is pulling some of its Pride merchandise from its sales floors across the country.

President of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Kelley Robinson released the following statement:

“Target should not be responding so easily to criticism and threats from the likes of the Proud Boys. Target should put the products back on the shelves and ensure their Pride displays are visible on the floors, not pushed into the proverbial closet. That’s what the bullies want. Target must be better.

“Extremist groups and individuals work to divide us and ultimately don’t just want rainbow products to disappear, they want us to disappear. For the past decade, the LGBTQ+ community has celebrated Pride with Target—it’s time that Target stands with us and doubles-down on their commitment to us.

“Going into Pride Month – a protest for our fundamental rights and a celebration of visibility and queer joy – businesses play a bigger role than they ever have before in advancing LGBTQ+ inclusion and representation. The LGBTQ+ community has been experiencing our worst year on record for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation – over 520 bills that aim to strip us of our very existence, dignity and history, from the doctor’s office to the classroom to the sports field.

“Businesses that are silent or are retreating at a time when anti-LGBTQ+ hatred, from statehouses to social media platforms, is at an all time high are abdicating their responsibility to stand by their values of diversity, equity and inclusion. We’ve seen it again and again: businesses that stand up for the values they espouse send a powerful message to their employees, shareholders and customers that equality is not up for debate. Every time businesses stand up and speak out for LGBTQ+ equality, they come out on top, regardless of baseless, anti-business attacks.”

Pikes Peak Pride 2023: Celebrating Unity, Resilience, and Heroes Among Us

Pikes Peak Pride 2023 will gather thousands of visitors from across the state and the Pikes Peak Region in downtown Colorado Springs. Over the course of two full days, attendees can expect a vibrant array of vendor booths, food trucks, a beer garden, and electrifying entertainment. The highlight of the celebration will be a captivating parade on Sunday, showcasing the spirit and diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities of Colorado.

This year, Pikes Peak Pride holds a special significance as it serves as a commemoration and celebration of the lives lost in the tragic shooting at Club Q on November 19, 2022. It is an opportunity for the community to come together and honor the memory of our fallen friends while reflecting on what it means to be LGBTQIA+ in southern Colorado. The event symbolizes our unity and resilience, demonstrating to the world the unwavering power of Pride.

During the Pride parade on Sunday, one extraordinary individual will lead the procession as the Grand Marshal—Rich Fierro, a local hero and an inspiration to the community. Rich, a decorated Veteran with three combat tours and the co-owner of Atrevida Beer Co. alongside his wife Jessica, was present at Club Q during the tragic incident. He courageously helped subdue the gunman using the shooter's own weapon. In recognition of his bravery, Rich was recently honored with the 2023 Congressional Medal of Honor Society's Citizen Honors Valor Award.

Beyond the festivities, Pikes Peak Pride 2023 holds a deeper purpose—to raise awareness and remind the world of the existence and accomplishments of LGBTQ+ Coloradans. It serves as a powerful reminder that despite the challenges we face, our community stands united and determined to create a more inclusive and accepting society.

So, mark your calendars and invite your friends to join you at Pikes Peak Pride 2023. Let's make this year's event a resounding celebration of love, acceptance, and diversity. Together, we can show the world that our Pride knows no bounds and that our voices will be heard.
