Books: When Your Gay or Lesbian Child Marries - A Guide for Parents

When Your Gay or Lesbian Child Marries: A Guide for Parents examines how same-sex marriage changes the relationships between parents and their gay or lesbian adult children.

It is also a guide for parents to better understand how parent/child bonds are transformed from the time of the child “coming out of the closet” to the raising of his or her own children. It will also serve to help parents understand the contours of same-sex marriage and their child’s struggles as he or she navigates marriage, parenthood, and family relationships over time.

Based on interviews with married (or previously married) gay men and women who had at least one parent alive during their marriage as well as parents who have both a married gay/lesbian child and a married heterosexual child, the author offers stories from people who illustrate a range of experiences. From coming out, to raising children, from wedding day ceremonies to separations and divorce, the stories found in these pages show how families can come together or fall apart, but also offer hope and guidance for those hoping to be supportive parents and in-laws, and to adult children who hope to maintain healthy relationships with their parents after marriage.

Dumb Friends League Telethon comes to 9NEWS

Animal lovers across metro Denver are invited to tune in to 9NEWS on Thursday, Feb. 11, for the Dumb Friends League Have a Heart for Homeless Pets Telethon.

The telethon will air during news programming and commercial breaks on 9NEWS KUSA/KTVD from 5 a.m. to 10:35 p.m. and feature adoptable pets and stories about how your support has helped transform the lives of homeless pets. Plus, tune in to KUSA from 10–11 a.m. on Feb. 11 as the Dumb Friends League takes over Colorado & Company with adorable pets, guest interviews and incredible second-chance stories of homeless pets right here in our community.

“At 9NEWS we've had the pleasure of working closely with the Dumb Friends League for years,” said 9NEWS President and General Manager Mark Cornetta. “They are a great organization with a critical mission in our community. We're excited to be working together with our audience to make this fundraising event a huge success."

Last year, the Dumb Friends League saved nearly 18,000 homeless pets, many of which received vital medical care, behavior training and foster care. Funds raised from this year’s telethon will help the Dumb Friends League continue to open its doors to all animals in need—whether they are old, ill, injured, unwanted, neglected, lost or in need of special care.

“There are so many vulnerable pets out there that rely on the Dumb Friends League,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League. “But we wouldn’t be able to provide the life-changing services we do without the support of our community.”

Have a heart for homeless pets and tune in to 9NEWS KUSA/KTVD on Thursday, Feb. 11. Pet lovers who are unable to watch the telethon can still make donations online at ddfl.org/telethon, by texting the word “PET” to 41444 or by calling (303) 751-5772. For more information about the Dumb Friends League and the telethon, visit ddfl.org or call (303) 751-5772.

Log Cabin Republicans Response to Iowa Caucus Results

Last night, Senator Ted Cruz emerged as the Republican winner of the Iowa Caucus. In response, Log Cabin Republicans President Gregory T. Angelo issued the following statement:
Log Cabin Republicans will continue to advocate for a common-sense conservative presidential nominee while ramping up our campaign to make Hillary Clinton's anti-gay past known. Log Cabin Republicans does not endorse in primary elections, but we encourage all our members to step up as our members in Iowa did today to advocate for a stronger, more inclusive GOP. This presidential race is fluid and far from over.

Tourism Leaders Unite for Africa’s First Global LGBT Business Conference

The 33rd Annual Global Convention of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association will be the first LGBT business conference of its kind on the African continent. The groundbreaking event, set for 14-16 April 2016 at the iconic Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa, will include presentations from leaders in the tourism industry from Africa, Europe, Asia and the United States.

South African Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom is set to deliver the keynote welcome to the IGLTA delegates and then participate in a conversation on global tourism with World Travel & Tourism Council President/CEO David Scowsill. Pacific Asia Travel Association CEO Mario Hardy will also address attendees during the three-day event.

“We hear so much anti-gay news coming out of Africa. This is an opportunity to take the conversation in a positive direction,” said IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella. “This will be a truly special event, blending top-quality education, business development, and networking with events that showcase Cape Town, the most LGBT-welcoming destination in Africa.”

In 1996, South Africa became the first country in the world to constitutionally prohibit sexual orientation-based discrimination. Same-sex marriage became legal in 2006.

“We are delighted that the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association has decided to bring its annual convention to South Africa for the first time,” Minister Hanekom said. “It indicates that South Africa is now being recognized around the world as a country that respects the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of their gender, race, religion or sexual orientation. After decades of condemnation as the pariah of the world under apartheid, we are all proud of this remarkable achievement.

“I trust that this convention will help to advance the dignity and rights of gay and lesbian travellers even further, and that it will give our operators of establishments more insight into how to cater for this market.”

Opponents of equality show no signs of slowing down – we can't either.

“If your heart is full of corruption or sin or immorality – in this case, homosexuality – then you should be discriminated against.”

It’s bad enough to hear those words uttered by anyone, but coming from an elected official? Seriously? Meet state Representative Gordon Klingenschmitt.

That’s the same Gordon Klingenschmitt who introduced a bill last year allowing Colorado businesses to turn away LGBT customers simply because of who they are. We expect to see similar proposals this year designed to roll back the protections our community has fought so hard to win. Our families can’t afford to be taken backward – not after how far we’ve come together. Sign up for Lobby Day now to show our elected officials that we will not stand for these attacks.

Nice To See StevieB: Back To Class

By StevieB

Monday marks the beginning of the Spring Semester. Just the thought of this makes my head spin. It seems that just moments ago I was celebrating the end of the 2015 fall semester. My MacBook has not even cooled down from the massive amount of writing that I did, now it is time to crack it open, and log on to my on-line classes again.

Today finds me feeling a bit nostalgic about going back to school. There is no longer a formal return to the sacred and hallowed halls of my college, since I began taking all on-line classes. I somehow forget during these times of misty eyed revisionist history that the physical returning to the University also brought months of sitting in a class headed by close-minded idiot professors, droning on about their personal agendas. Although, if I am honest with my self, what I miss most was sitting behind hockey players who had allergic reactions to wearing pants. If I really examined my attending of classroom based classes, it was a trade off. Yes, I now avoid the close-minded Professors by taking my classes via computer, but I also miss hockey players falling asleep in class with the gym shorts slipping lower and lower.

But, I don't regret switching to my electronic class room. This means I can do my school work at one of the cities gayer coffee shops. With a wider variety of boys in gym shorts. On Monday I will have to scope out my territory. My new classroom. I will then quickly begin to countdown the days until May 9th.

See the Log Cabin Republicans Hillary Clinton Video Everyone Is Talking About

"Not everyone in the United States Senate supported marriage equality in 2004, but few took to the floor of the chamber to hammer home the point the way Hillary Clinton did," says Log Cabin Republicans President Gregory T. Angelo. "Democrats and members of the LGBT community have given Hillary Clinton a pass on past transgressions and even allowed her to rewrite the history of the gay rights movement; Log Cabin Republicans will not. It's time for the people of Iowa — and the country — to know that when it mattered, Hillary Clinton was wrong on gay rights."

DNC LGBT Advisory Board Co-Chairs Announced

Last year, the Democratic National Committee took the unprecedented step of creating an LGBT Advisory Board to elevate grassroots LGBT Democratic voices. This Board will work with the DNC to advance LGBT equality, to identify causes of concern to the LGBT community at the local level, and to get out the LGBT and allied vote in order to elect Democratic candidates who respect and support the rights of the LGBT community.

Members will be selected from all 50 states and will represent the full diversity of the LGBT community. The LGBT Advisory Board was initiated under the leadership of DNC LGBT Caucus Chairman Earl Fowlkes. Whereas membership of the DNC LGBT Caucus is limited to elected DNC Members, membership on the Advisory Board is open to all LGBT Democrats who apply.

Today, Chairman Fowlkes is proud to announce that former Houston Mayor Annise Parker and LGBT & HIV/AIDS activist Rev. José M. Román have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the Advisory Board. Together they will ensure the LGBT Advisory Board regularly convenes to discuss issues of local importance across the states and ways Democrats can continue to take action to advance LGBT rights.

“The LGBT community has made huge strides the past 7 years under Democratic leadership, but with few exceptions the Republican Party continues to fight against equality at every turn,” said Mayor Parker. “During the fight to pass the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance in my own city, the despicable depiction of transgender people showed us how far our opponents will go to stop progress on protecting the rights of LGBT Americans. We see anti-LGBT pieces of legislation from Congress to local councils blocking equal rights, promoting discrimination under the guise of religious speech, and blocking transgender people from going to the restroom. The DNC’s LGBT Advisory Board will give us new opportunities to elevate local battles like HERO and to share strategies across communities about way to organize and win. I look forward to using the lessons learned in Houston to help lead this effort.”

“The diverse voices of the LGBT community have not always been represented in the national LGBT movement,” said Rev. Román. “This Advisory Board will help those voices be heard in the Party’s continuing efforts to advance LGBT rights. It will also help shine a light on LGBT Democratic candidates and the efforts of elected Democrats fighting for our community. I look forward to helping lead and shape this diverse body so that we can continue to fight for and protect the progress we have made.”

“The LGBT Caucus is very grateful that Reverend Román and Mayor Parker have stepped up to volunteer their time and leadership as co-chairs of the LGBT Advisory Board,” said DNC LGBT Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes. “I look forward to working with them and the entire Advisory Board in advancing equality for the LGBT community and helping to stop Republican efforts that would bring us backward.”
