LGBTQ Health: Improving Care and Confronting Discrimination

More than half of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Americans report that they have experienced violence, threats or harassment because of their sexuality or gender identity. Nearly one in five LGBTQ people has avoided seeking medical care for fear of discrimination. In HEALTH IN THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY: Improving Care and Confronting Discrimination, experts in LGBTQ health will explore health disparities and discrimination that impact the LGBTQ community. Drawing from a recent poll by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the panel will look at the impact of these experiences on physical and mental well-being — and what can be done to help.

Watch the live webcast at ForumHSPH.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Forumhsph. An on-demand video will be posted afterwards on the event website. A searchable transcript will be posted there a few days after the event.

BREAKING: Conversion therapy ban passes out of committee

By Laura "Pinky" Reinsch, Political Director, One Colorado

Just now, a committee in the Colorado Legislature passed a bill that will protect LGBTQ young people from so-called "conversion therapy” — a dangerous and discredited practice that falsely claims to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. The bill will be up for a full vote in the House soon and we need your help to make sure it passes.

CLICK HERE to tell your state representative that they should protect LGBTQ youth by supporting this ban.

All the nation’s leading medical and mental health organizations have come out against these practices — which include the use of shame, verbal abuse, and even techniques like electric shocks. These practices pose serious health risks including depression, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, social withdrawal, and even suicide.

You can help end these practices in our state by telling your lawmaker that you want them to protect young LGBTQ people by supporting this bill.

It's time for Colorado to send a message that we support LGBTQ young people and don't want this happening in our state.

We can’t turn our backs on young people and allow one more young person to be targeted and hurt by these dangerous and discredited practices.

Cherry Creek North: Have You Ever Been Someplace That Just Feels Right?

One hundred and forty years ago, Cherry Creek North was part of a small town called Harman. Since then, Cherry Creek North has emerged as a staple in the fabric of Denver and Colorado, blossoming into a very special mixed-use district.

What sets it apart? Perhaps it’s the walkability of the area, or lodging that provides all the comforts of home. Maybe it’s the laughter spilling out of a gallery during a nightly wine tasting, or alfresco dining on a patio laced with flowers. When you’re in Cherry Creek North, you can sit back and exhale. Life feels good here.

Nice To See StevieB: Keys to Success

By StevieB

I stumbled across a couple of studies over the weekend. They were the “how to be happy” or “keys to happiness” studies. Mostly I hate this type of mumbo-jumbo, but as I read, I quickly realized one scary thing. They were right. Every “study” had two major themes in my life. I hate it when the internets is right. Jerks.

Be positive
Are you overwhelmed by a sense of dread every time you try something new? Happy people focus on what is possible rather than dwell on the chances for failure. They look at the lighter side and find humor in every situation.

Work out
Consistently breaking a sweat. Exercise improves one's state of mind in part by affecting the body's levels of two chemicals: cortisol and endorphins. The adrenal glands of angry or scared people produce cortisol. This increases blood pressure and blood sugar, weakens the immune response and can lead to organ inflammation and damage. But working out burns cortisol, restoring the body's normal levels.

Transgender Day of Visibility - Black Excellence Tour

CeCe McDonald and Joshua Allen - both transgender rights and prison abolition activists of color - will visit Auraria campus as part of their #BlackExcellence tour on March 28 to lead a dialogue about trans people of color identity, visibility politics, and the violence against trans communities.

CeCe McDonald gained national attention when she was sentenced to 41 months in prison for defending herself in a racist and transphobic attack in Minneapolis in 2011. CeCe has co-founded the #BlackExcellenceTour with Joshua Allen as a social justice project that combats violence against trans, gender non-conforming and queer people of color. By utilizing art, activism, and storytelling, CeCe and Josh bring attention to issues affecting our communities and spark discussions about justice, freedom and equality for those living at the intersections of marginal identities.

The Gay Vegans: Your Voice Makes A Difference

By Dan Hanley

There is so much political news to follow I am grateful I saw the story from Maine about a person running for state senate who criticized one of the Parkland student activists. The candidate’s remarks soon were all over the news and soon someone decided to run against him. Before his remarks he was running unopposed. Not only did he now have an opponent, I then read that he dropped out of the race!

Though some may find what happened to him terrible and an attack on his free speech, the point I want to make is that many in his area disliked his comments and some of them disagreed with his comments. It could have stopped here but one person couldn’t stomach the fact of him running unopposed (she literally said she would be sick if he won), and decided to run against him. Now, because of locals actively speaking out against his comments, he is out of the race.

Regardless of what you think about him, his opposition, or even the Parkland student activists, this story is a great example of what can happen when people speak out. Even those on the polar opposite of my political beliefs may agree that having unopposed candidates is not a great thing for democracy.

This story also reminded me that many people feel safe speaking unkindly of others. Instead of focusing on policy or political disagreements and telling someone why they disagree, people resort to personal attacks. Not necessary, especially if you are totally secure in your opinion or belief.

Imagine what our next elections would look like if we ensured that anyone running unopposed in state legislative or US Congressional races would have someone decide to run against them!

If you have time, see who is running in your local elections to represent you at your state house and the US Capitol. Are they running unopposed in their primary? Or in the main election? There are many people running for office right now who would have never envisioned that just one year ago.
